High Holy Day Service Descriptions

Sanctuary ServiceRabbi Ronald J. Shulman Hazzan Emanuel PerlmanWorship is formal in style, providing an inspiring and evocative setting for personal prayer and reflection. The Chizuk Amuno Choir complements the service. English readings and reflections, as well as a sermon and teachings are interspersed during the service to enrich and inform each person’s experience.

Krieger Auditorium ServiceRabbi Deborah WechslerDr. Larry Amsterdam, Ba’al Tefilah Worship is formal in style, providing a warm and participatory setting for personal prayer and reflection. English readings and reflections, and a sermon, are interspersed during the service to enrich and inform each person’s experience.

Stulman Auditorium ServiceRabbi Paul Schneider Dr. David Roffman, Ba’al TefilahWorship is less formal in style and somewhat abbreviated, providing an intimate and participatory setting. Stories, anecdotes, and readings are interspersed during the service to enrich and inform each person’s experience.

n Your seats for the First Day of Rosh HaShanah as well as on Yom Kippur eve and morning will remain in the same location as last year. However, subject to the availability of seats in different locations, you have the option of moving to different seats or a different worship service.

n On the Second Day of Rosh HaShanah all the members of our synagogue family, gather together in the Sanctuary to celebrate and worship.

Though seating in the Sanctuary will be open, all congregation members who wish may reserve seats for this communal Second Day service in advance.

n Reserved seats not occupied by 10:30 a.m. will become available for general seating.

n Elderly and disabled members who require special assistance for their comfort in the Sanctuary are able to reserve their seats for the entire Second Day service. Hosts will be located throughout the Sanctuary and balcony to ensure that everyone is assisted and comfortably seated.

n If you would like to make a seating or location adjustment, inquire about the availability and charges for extra seats for family members, reserve seats for the second day of Rosh HaShanah, or for any other questions regarding High Holy Day seating, please contact Judy Simkin, 410/486-6400, ext. 232 or [email protected] by Friday, August 16.

Study Session: “Thinking in Jewish” 2:45 p.m. Dr. Benjamin Sax Jewish Scholar, Institute for Christian and Jewish Studies

What does it mean to think Jewishly? Do all Jews think Jewishly? Can non-Jews think Jewishly? Can a thought even be Jewish? In this session, we will examine the different ways thinkers have engaged such questions in relation to the critical issues of twenty-first century Judaism and Jewish identity.

Blessing Our ChildrenOn the First night of Rosh HaShanahSeptember 4, 6 p.m.It is a meaningful Jewish custom to begin each holiday occasion with blessings and hopes for our children. Receiving their parents’ loving embrace at the start of a new year, children of all ages, children of every generation, feel the joy and promise in holiday celebration.

At Chizuk Amuno, we will celebrate this timeless tradition as a community during our first service of the New Year, on Erev Rosh HaShanah.

(Please note, the Ma’ariv service lasts one hour. Blessing our children will take place during the first portion of our gathering.)

Our family blessings are inclusive, celebrating all ages and each generation. Parents, bring your children. Adult children, bring your parents, your children’s grandparents. Grandparents, bring your children and grandchildren.

We look forward to sharing in blessing our children and the blessing of beginning the new Jewish year together.

Selihot: An Evening ofGreeting, Reflection, and Hope Saturday, August 31

8:45 p.m. “The Holiness of Hope: Being Optimistic in a Worried World”

A new Jewish year is upon us. The same old world confronts us. Our days fill with worries about

world events, about our personal challenges, and how best to live with meaning and

contentment.

Preparing for the High Holy Days, we’ll reflect. How do we stay realistic and hopeful? What inspiration do we seek? What optimism does Judaism teach? Join with Rabbi Shulman as we explore answers to these questions.

Before our service begins, the Torah Scrolls in the ark are publicly changed

into their white High Holy Day covers.

10 p.m. Selihot Service A String Quartet will accompany Hazzan Perlman

and the Chizuk Amuno choir during our Selihot Service.

During the service, our rabbis will each reflect on this question:

“What do you hope for in the New Year?”

Family ServiceGrades K - 4 ~ Rabbi Stuart SeltzerOur interactive services include storytelling and feature the prayer themes and symbols of the High Holy Days. On the first day of Rosh HaShanah families have the choice of either a 10 a.m or 11:15 a.m. service.

Youth Services

Torah for TotsGrade K and below ~ Michelle Gold A high energy, interactive service that includes song, dancing, snacks, and stories.

Middle School Kol Nidre Service on Yom Kippur EveGrades 5 - 8 ~ Erica AllenA participatory service that includes age-appropriate readings and discussions.

Youth Service Schedule

Our younger families can participate in joyous, family-centered High Holy Day services as well as participate in adult services. Please note that space is limited and prior sign-up is required for Torah for Tots, Family Service, and the Middle School Kol Nidre Service. You may register for these services on the Worship page of our website, by returning the attached form, or by e-mailing [email protected].

Youth Programs

Elementary School ~ Camp Tishrei Grades K - 4 10 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Both days of Rosh HaShanah and on Yom Kippur “Camp Tishrei” will be located on the second floor above the synagogue administrative offices and will include a variety of High Holy Day activities as students travel by grade level to different classrooms. Timing for “Camp Tishrei” will coordinate with the times for the Family Services to accommodate students who wish to go to both.

Middle School Grades 5 - 8 10 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Both days of Rosh HaShanah and on Yom Kippur Students will experience a variety of High Holy Day activities as they travel by grade level to different classrooms in the Middle School wing.

TeensGrades 9 - 12 10:30 a.m. - noon First day of Rosh HaShanah and on Yom KippurAttend an exciting and provocative morning of learning and socializing, including a lively discussion and an interactive text interpretation, in the Lerner Beit Midrash. Refreshments, of course, will be served on Rosh HaShanah.

No prior sign-up is required for Youth Programming. Parents are asked to drop off and pick up their children from these activities. Children and teens are invited to join their families in the individual adult worship services at the conclusion of Youth Programming. For more information, contact High Holy Day Youth Program Coordinator, Erica Allen, at 410/486-8641.

Before or after participating in Family Service or Torah for Tots, parents may join their worship service while their children attend childcare or celebrate in age-appropriate programs provided by Chizuk Amuno’s educators. In this way, parents may enjoy holiday time both with their children and for themselves.

Childcare begins at 9 a.m. in the Goldsmith Early Childhood Education Center wing and concludes when congregational services are completed.
