In June we announced our latest acquisition as we welcomed the Berwin Group to the HEXPOL family. The Berwin Group has more than 60 years’ experience of rubber compounding and is today a leading Rubber Compounder in the UK market.

The Group comprises of Berwin Rubber Co Ltd, Berwin Industrial Polymers Ltd and Flexi-Cell (UK) Ltd with two manufacturing sites in Manchester, in the north of the UK and one site in Gloucestershire in the south of the UK. Berwin has around 200 employees.

Berwin produce a wide range of elastomeric compounds including; EPDM, EPR, NR, SBR, CR, CSM and IR. The portfolio also includes several specialist elastomers for aggressive environments such as HNBR, XNBR, AEM, ACM, ECO, EVA and CPSE. Berwin also operate a dedicated silicone mixing facility.

Berwin work in diverse market sectors such as aerospace, construction, electronics, marine, railways and general industrial. The largest market sector is the automotive industry where Berwin supply compounds for the following applications: door seals and weather strip, hoses, gaiters and engine seals.

We spoke with Simon Lawton (Technical Director & Deputy Managing Director) and Paul Stevenson (Financial Manager & Deputy Managing Director) at the Berwin Group.

Welcome to the HEXPOL family, please can you tell us a little about the Berwin Group? Berwin Group

is a leading UK custom compounder. We provide rubber compounds that conform to international standards and bespoke customer requirements. These cover a wide range of applications from technical rubber goods through to tyre and automotive products. We pride ourselves on the level of technical assistance and customer service we provide, making us the number one choice in the UK.

What is your first impression of HEXPOL? The recent acquisition by HEXPOL is the perfect match for Berwin. HEXPOL provide the environment for us to make the most of our business, it has all the positive aspects of being a larger organisation without any of the disadvantages of a heavy corporate structure. The way HEXPOL operates is perfect for Berwin and will allow us to make the most of future business opportunities.

Where do you see the biggest possibilities for the future? The synergies HEXPOL can provide to the Berwin group will allow us to be world class in all areas from raw material optimisation, efficiencies of production and customer service.

What are the main objectives for the Berwin Group over the next 12 months? Our main objectives for the next 12 months are to make the most of the business opportunities provided to us as part of the HEXPOL family. We plan to ensure we capture every available opportunity in growth both in our organic compound and in the silicone market and reinforce our position as the number one compounder in the UK.

Risks and opportunitiesFrom the sustainability perspective the previous year was quite extraordinary – 2015 was the hottest year on the books and the odds are very high that 2016 will break the record. Policy and actions to mitigate climate change are therefore high on the agenda for society and the 2015 climate conference (COP21) in Paris established a new strategy to mitigate climate change. In addition to that, the United Nations presented 17 new Global Sustainable Development Goals, including strong commitments to take climate actions.

Expectations regarding the input from business and industry remain high, in terms of both responsible behavior and development of products and services that benefit man, society and the environment. From HEXPOL’s point of view we can see both risks and business opportunities and it is positive that our sustainability objectives match a number of the global goals. The aim is to further develop both our long-term strategy and the daily work on sustainable development and continue to be transparent in the communication of progress and hurdles.

Transparent sustainability reportsDuring 2015 the HEXPOL companies presented many good examples of improvement actions. For example, successful energy-efficiency projects, increased use of renewable energy sources, activities to reduce risks in the workplaces, phasing-out of hazardous chemicals, development and marketing of products with enhanced environmental features, support to local societies, and further implementation of the Supplier Sustainability Guideline.

We are transparent in our communication and main channels are the Annual Report, The Sustainability Report and the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) Report. Here are a few highlights from the Sustainability Report 2015:• The total energy consumption went down and the

key figure for energy (GWh/net sales) showed a downward trend.

• The Group’s emissions of carbon dioxide were reduced and the key performance indicator (tons of

CO2/net sales) continues to show a downward trend. Actions such as energy-efficiency projects, increased used of biofuels (Sri Lanka) and purchase of “green electricity” (Czech Republic, Germany, Sweden), contributes to the reduced carbon footprint.

• During the year a handful of hazardous chemicals were phased out and another ten chemicals have been identified for future measures.

• We continued to create business opportunities from products that create environmental benefits, for example, HEXPOL TPE Compounding launched the new Dryflex Green product line based on raw materials from renewable sources. HEXPOL Compounding introduced lightweight nonconductive EPDM compounds for the automotive industry.

• We engaged in social activities throughout the world, for example, “open houses” for employees and their families, contacts and projects in cooperation with schools and universities, and financial support for sports, health projects and associations.

Lots of new features in ISO 14001 The ISO 14001 environmental management standard has been implemented widely throughout the world. It is used by around 325,000 companies and other organizations internationally and contributes to better management of environmental issues. Certification according to ISO 14001 is mandatory for all HEXPOL companies and our experiences of the standard are overall very positive.

The standard has now been updated for the third time and the 2015 version includes a raft of new features. Key changes include the structure of the environmental management system, the view of management’s responsibility and the importance of environmental issues being part of strategic measures. In addition, stakeholder requirements and expectations must be managed clearly and the environmental impact of the business must be viewed from a life cycle perspective.

Dryflex Green Thermoplastic Elastomer (TPE) compounds offer plastic product manufacturers new opportunities for sustainabilityWith advances in technical properties and functionality and a growing number of manufacturers, materials and applications, the bioplastics market is emerging from the side-lines. Although we are currently in a period of unpredictability in oil prices and supply, it is recognised that in the long-term industries that have traditionally relied on fossil based feedstocks will need to embrace new technologies to sustainably meet the demands of a growing global population. As an active player in this transition, HEXPOL TPE recently launched a new family of biobased thermoplastic elastomers to the market called Dryflex Green. Currently biodegradable and biobased plastics represent less than one percent of global plastics production. In 2014, global production capacity amounted to around 1.7 million tonnes. However, there is a growing number of bioplastic materials and feedstocks entering the market. In 2015 European Bioplastics in cooperation with the Institute for Bioplastics and Biocomposites and the nova-Institute presented data that the global market for bioplastics will quadruple to 7.8 million tonnes by 2019. Biobased represents the largest driver with an increase from 60% of global bioplastics production in 2014 to over 80% in 2019.

What are Bioplastics?We can categorise bioplastics in three groups, each with their own set of properties and characteristics:

Biobased or partially biobased: a bioplastic where a percentage of the content comes from renewable agricultural or biological materials.

Biodegradable and biobased: a bioplastic that is designed to degrade under compost conditions. Containing renewable content.

Biodegradable: a bioplastic that is designed to degrade under compost conditions. Based on fossil resources.

Why use Biobased?There are numerous potential benefits from utilising bioplastics: • Biobased plastics help to reduce the usage and

dependency on limited fossil resources, which also are expected to become more expensive in the coming decades.

• Plants absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere as they grow. By using these crops to create biobased plastic products, greenhouse gases (CO2) are removed from the atmosphere.

• As many bioplastics can be mechanically recycled in existing recycling streams, they also have the potential to contribute to an improved LCA (Life Cycle Assessment). They can first be used for products (both as virgin- and recycled materials), then at the end of the product life they can be used for renewable energy generation.

• Crops for industrial use can be grown in poor soil which is unsuited to food crops, thereby avoiding food crop displacement and improving biodiversity.

Dryflex Green TPE CompoundsDryflex Green is a family of biobased thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) compounds. A range of options has been developed containing raw materials from renewable resources that have been responsibly grown. Raw materials can be produced from various renewable sources, these include products and by-products from agricultural that are rich in carbohydrates, especially saccharides such as grain, sugar beet, sugar cane, etc. The biobased content could derive from different raw materials such as polymers, fillers, plasticizers or additives. The Dryflex Green family includes compounds with amounts of renewable content up to 90% (ASTM D 6866-12) and hardness from 30 Shore A to 50 Shore D.

Patrick Dorr has been appoin-ted Sales Manager Germany, Austria, Switzerland at HEXPOL Compounding sprl, Eupen, Belgium. Patrick has a commercial high school degree. He started working as chief storekeeper in a large garage, as well as responsible for the product marketing of acces-sories. In recent years he worked as key account manager in the aluminium industry at Hydro Aluminium, first in Raeren (B) and later on in Tønder, Denmark, being in charge of the automotive customers Europe-wide, both for the OEM’s and for tier-suppliers. At HEXPOL he will be respon-sible for customer liaison and support and the development of the customer base in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

Urs Calonder has been appoin-ted Regional Manager for HEXPOLCompounding China based at HEXPOL Compounding Qingdao Co Ltd., being responsible for the two HEXPOL Compounding facilities in China; Qingdao and Foshan (Rubber & TPE). He has a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Zurich, Switzerland. Prior to joining HEXPOL, Urs had a manage-ment position at EMS Inventa AG, was MD & Asia President of LTG Group, CEO of Rieter Automoitive China (Autoneum) and gained a lot of working & management experience with more than 24 years of presence in China. He has also been Chairman of the Swiss Chamber of Commerce in China for 4 years. In recent years Urs worked as a Business Unit Manager for Maag Group (Maag, Automatik, Gala, Reduction Engineering Scheer) leading their industrial segment worldwide.

Mark George has been appoin-ted Director of Operations for HEXPOL Compounding Mexico. Mark joined HEXPOL 2004. He began working on the produc-tion floor of Robbins, LLC. Mark soon advanced to Total Quality Manager and was responsible for implementing quality programs. His focus was leading Lean Manufacturing and Continuous Improvement teams to increase productivity and enhance quality. Mark has been employed with HEXPOL for 12 of his 23 years in the rubber industry. He has held the positions of Quality Manager, Technical Manager, and Managing Director. Mark puts great emphasis on what HEXPOL’s Leadership Program has done for him and the campus in Statesville.Mark is a graduate of the University of North Alabama, where he studied Spanish, biology and chemistry.

Dryflex Green TPE compounds display mechanical and physical properties close to and comparable to TPE compounds from fossil based raw materials. Dryflex Green TPE compounds can be used in many applications that currently use conventional TPD compounds, such as soft-touch grips and handles, sealing and closures, sports equipment, toys, packaging and tools.

RheTech LLC has received the Pollution Prevention Award from the Washtenaw County Environmental Excellence Partnership Program (E2P2). The Environ-mental Excellence Partnership Program (E2P2) recognizes businesses and non-profits that provide leadership in environmental protection and practice environmentally sound behavior in the areas of water quality protection, waste reduction and recycling, and pollution prevention.

“We are very excited to be recognized with this award. Here at RheTech, we continuously aim to improve and reduce the environmental footprint of our products and facilities,” said Brian Gillette, corporate safety & environmental officer, RheTech. “We have always taken

a very proactive role in our green initiatives, which not only helps our company and the local communities in which we do business, but also helps our customers and other companies achieve their environmental goals as well.”

Some of the environmental policies put in place at RheTech include: working towards becoming a “zero waste” facility; maintaining exemplary compliance during all partnership program inspections; installing solar tubes in office hallways;recycling cardboard, pallets, bags, and office paper; replacing lightfixtures with LED lightbulbs; automatic light turn-off devices installed in most common areas; and installing screens in catch basins to ensure clean and safe water.

In the first half of 2016, Tailor-made products and optimized solutions from Stellana are getting more and more preferred in the Asian market. Despite of the slowdown in China economy the polyurethane wheels business in Stellana China grows.

Growth increase comes mainly from the traditional OEM forklift industry and is showing good growth and good growth potential. As a leading manufacturer in the world, Stellana has established stable connections with major OEM forklift manufacturers in China. Now Stellana is well acknowledged through numerous applications about the outstanding wheel performances, strong global R&D support and localized customer-focus services from Stellana. Owing to this, many customers have entered strategic partnership with Stellana to enhance the services and business together.

Besides the forklift industry, Stellana wheels have won great interest in many other corner of material handling industry. Apart from forklifts, Stellana has products used for, for example, baggage, automotive and mining conveyors, escalators, auto doors and monorail trains. It is an optimized solution based on customer requirements and working conditions. With over 60 years wheel production experience and rich material coverage, Stellana tailor-made solutions have proved to be a great success with improved efficiency in their designated applications.

HEXPOL TPE are continuing to grow their international profile and reputation for technical know-how by presenting at a number of trade shows and conferences. Among the shows they have attended so far this year are Pharmapack (France), Plastteknik (Sweden), Chinaplas (China), PDM (UK), Plastpol (Poland) and Plastics Meetings (France).

At these events HEXPOL TPE aims to showcase the versatility of their portfolio of Thermoplastic Elastomers (TPEs) and how they can be found in a range of applications in the consumer, medical, construction, automotive and packaging industries. Of particular interest has been their TPE compounds for overmoulding with Polyamide (PA). Due to its very high strength, impact and high temperature resistance, PA is often used in applications such as power-tools. The TPE can be used to add safety features such as a non-slip grip or ergonomic handle.

Since their launch last year, the Dryflex Green range of TPE compounds based on raw materials from renewable resources has also received a lot of interest and we can see a growing demand for these types of materials in the polymer industry.

The VDI TPE conference, which took place in Germany in June, was chaired by Sven-M. Druwen, product manager HEXPOL TPE and Peter Ryzko, managing director Müller Kunststoffe. The focus of the conference was innovative solutions and trends in TPE processing. Isabel Valtin, a development engineer in materials and processing at Müller Kunststoffe, also presented a paper on the requirements for 3D printing and its applications at the conference.

40 Years of ELASTO Sweden – A story of mudflaps to medical1976 was an eventful year. It was the year the Supersonic Concorde took its first commercial flight, Stephen Wozniak and Steve Jobs founded Apple Computers and Robert De Niro first asked the question “You talkin’ to me?” in Taxi Driver. It was also the year that ELASTO Sweden was born.

Ladislav Kubicka, a Master of Engineering in Rubber from former Czechoslovakia, founded Elastoteknik AB in Halmstad, Sweden in 1976. The business idea was to produce Thermoplastic Elastomers as a compound for injection moulding and extrusion. During the first years, compounds were developed for the household and automotive sector. The most important sectors were guards and mudflaps for Volvo and Scania.

A new era of rapid growth began in 1988 with the appointment of a new managing director, Per G. Hellberg, he was a key figure in the company’s further development due to his extensive experience within the plastic- and rubber industry. Focus was on developing new TPE compounds and increasing market share. Investments in the first twin screw extruder were made in 1989. In the following years, a continuous expansion in people, technical and production capabilities took place. To support their growing customer base further investments were made in new compounding lines, offices, pilot plant and a new laboratory. The company was building a trusted reputation for versatile, customised TPE compounds and technical know-how, particularly for the consumer, automotive and household markets. In 2000 the Åmål site was certified according to ISO 14001. The company was also continuing to expand their portfolio and expertise in TPE compounds for the medical industry.

Medical became a strategic market for the company, where they saw good opportunities for TPE compounds.

The Mediprene brand of TPE compounds for medical applications was launched in 2004 and growing sales resulted in a new production line and supporting sub-systems being installed in 2006 with focus on clean compounds (medical, transparent, food contact etc.). In 2007 the company became the first TPE compounder in Europe to be awarded the ISO 13485 accreditation for the development and manufacture of Thermoplastic Elastomer compounds for the medical device industry.

The company continues to thrive as part of the HEXPOL family with further investment in people, production capacity, warehousing and a new technical centre at theirÅmål site. They were joined by Müller Kunststoffe, the German TPE compounder in 2012, and HEXPOL also developed TPE production capabilities in China. Today these companies form the HEXPOL TPE Group, with a vision to become a world leading TPE brand, recognised for material know-how, personal service, application expertise and global capabilities.
