HERONSFORMULA

DEFINITION

• Heron’s formula is used to find the area of triangle when the length of all sides is known.

• The formula is credited to Hero (or Heron) of Alexandria, who was a Greek Engineer and Mathematician in 10 –

70 AD.• Amongst other things, • he developed the Aeolipile, the • first known steam engine, but it • was treated as a toy!

Where b = base and h = corresponding height of the triangle

COMMON FORMULA

Examples :

• 1) Find the area of a triangle having sides : AB = 4 cm BC = 3 cm CD = 5 cm

• QUESTION- What is the area of this triangle?

Height = h = 12Base = b = 20

Area = ½ bh = ½ × 20 × 12 = 120
