So July, we meet again. Now, no pressure on you or anything, but we’ve called a false start on the summer so many times this year that your failure to furnish us with weeks of uninterrupted sun could see 2013 disqualified as a whole and we’ll have to start again from New Year.To business though, and in this edition we honour The Gate, which has served as a beacon of entertainment for the city centre for over a decade now. Whether you’ve been seeking a meal, a film, a good time, or just want to ride its many escalators up and down for a few hours (more fun than it sounds), it’s provided the city with much more than simply a place to escape the rain since it opened way back in November of 2002.It’s not just that though, there’s our usual bag of goodies as well, including an introduction to Newcastle’s brand new haven of tea, and its new palace of gin – delete as appropriate depending on how rough your week has been. Enjoy!

YOU’RE IN NEWCASTLE

YOUR FORTNIGHTLY GUIDE TO WHAT’S ON

Your car is a big part of your life, so why should test driving it be such a small part of the process? We think you should go away and live with it. At Benfield, with 14 brands to choose from, we want to make sure you get the car that’s right for you. That’s why we let you take it away, see if it goes in your garage, and whether the dog fits in the back. It’s only by taking the time to get to know each other that you’ll discover if you’re right for each other. Benfield. Enjoy the journey.

FEATURE FEATURE

On 28th November 2002, Newcastle was formally introduced to The Gate. It came at a cost of £80 million and was billed as the answer to all the new leisure questions that a rapidly expanding city was starting to ask. Remember the first time you stepped foot inside? It’s huge. Gargantuan almost. Over 200,000 square feet of seemingly endless spiralling floors that extended their way up into the city’s skyline, woven around each other in a tangled mesh of food, drink, films, and gambling. Like some wondrous metallic treehouse for grown-ups, with a pizza hut (who, by the way, currently offer a £6 happy hour deal). Here in 2013 the novelty might have

worn off, but the appeal and the attraction certainly hasn’t, with well over 8 million visitors passing through its doors every year, it’s become a glistening beacon for the city’s entertainment seekers, and an integral part of the nightlife too.Whilst the building itself symbolises a dazzling venture into the region’s future - all glistening lights and ultra-sleek, modern design – its location in Newcastle’s Grainger Town places it squarely in the historical heart of the city, and has been the landmark achievement of the Grainger Town restoration project that brought us thousands of new jobs and hundreds of new businesses.Since 2012 it’s been part of The

Crown Estate (which very technically means it belongs to The Queen), and as one of their few properties in this part of the world, they’ve been keen to make an impact, as their Regional Portfolio Manager Hannah Milne, told us; “The Gate is already an immensely popular leisure destination in the North East. Our vision is to build on this success, further broadening the leisure mix to attract even more visitors. For example, earlier this year we brought the Handmade Burger Co to the Gate, our first addition since we took ownership. It was a great example of our overall strategy to provide a leisure mix that meets the needs of the existing customer base, whilst also

THE GATE

reaching out to other consumer groups, like families.”Where other areas of town seem to tick all the boxes of a particular demographic, The Gate remains unique in its ‘something for everyone’ role. With famously child friendly restaurants like Pizza Hut, T.G.I Friday’s, and Frankie & Benny’s, it offers parents the chance to cater for even the fussiest of eaters without having to trail across town deciding where to go. Plus, it’s all located just an escalator’s ride away from one of the city’s largest multiplexes the Empire Cinema. This summer they’ll not only be showing all the Hollywood blockbusters like Man of

Steel, Despicable Me 2, This Is The End, The Internship, The Frozen Ground, Monsters University (which there’s currently a special giveaway on their website for. Register on thegatenewcastle.co.uk to be in with a chance of winning), but they also offer a special Empire Juniors deal every Saturday and Sunday morning, with some tickets at a pocket money price of £1 per person for some of the greatest classic family films, as well as recent releases.Of course, those of you who’ve earned a rare evening off from looking after the young ones and are looking for a sophisticated evening out are catered for too, with the classy

and cocktail-savvy Opera Piano Bar offering visitors a chance to sample an array of musical talent, as well as some of Newcastle’s most innovative cocktails. From Mojito Mondays to Flirtini Fridays, Opera has something for everyone and their happy hours run from 5pm to 7pm Monday through Thursday, with a selection of your favourite cocktails available for as little as £2.50. When you’re done, you can always pop up to try your hand at Newcastle’s widest selection of casino gaming in Aspers, where you can rub shoulders and have a drink with some of the city’s biggest names, whilst enjoying televised sport on their massive 138” screen. Not a member yet? Fear not as it’s completely free to join.Bridging Newcastle’s classical past with its ambitious future, The Gate’s always got one eye on what’s next, and plans for further improvements are already afoot. As well as new premises like the Handmade Burger Co, there’s going to be some landscaping work to improve the layout and add to the overall experience of its visitors, something which Helen is keen to emphasise. “Over the next year we hope to make even more additions to the line-up at the Gate,” she told us, “with the aim of securing its position as the most successful leisure scheme in the region. We also recognise that developing a quality leisure destination isn’t just about the tenant mix or which premises are there, it’s about the customer experience, which is why we are looking at how we can enhance public spaces at The Gate for the benefit of our visitors.”Whatever the future holds, the venue’s sure to offer a wide array of food, drink and entertainment facilities to suit everyone’s needs. From families to film-buffs, and grandparents to gamblers, we’ll meet you all at The Gate.

If 2012 was the year craft beer left its mark on NE1, then 2013 looks like being the year gin does the same. A resurgence in the spirit across bars in the city has led to Pleased To Meet You, Newcastle’s very own gin palace opening its doors on High Bridge.Squeezing in with a host of other interesting and bespoke establishments, the new watering hole boasts over 70 different gins with customers able to mix and match their way through an astounding array of tonics and garnishes. There’s also an impressive array of wines, beers and other spirits, with the humble whisky boasting almost 50 different varieties behind their bar. Those of you who wisely avoid a tipple on an empty stomach will be delighted at the sight of PTMY’s menu, with grazing boards, salads and sweets accommodating for the peckish, and a huge array of meat dishes, mussels and burgers taking care of the ravenous. The venue’s also gone through a gorgeous internal renovation, with lush wooden flooring and rustic bare brick walls complimenting the rather retro exposed copper piping. The front of the space is also wall to wall glass doors, which will open out to ensure the summer vibes make their way in as the weather picks up.

PLEASED TO MEET YOU NEWCASTLE

THE NEW WATERING HOLE BOASTS OVER 70 DIFFERENT GINS

It was a Friday night in Bournemouth. A gig I was not looking forward to returning to. The last time I had the played this gig I remember being taunted by a 30 man stag group dressed as Zombies. It is one thing to be taunted by a stag but a Zombie stag...it reinforced the humiliation. Nothing a half litre of wine can’t cure on a two hour train journey followed by a ghetto night bus trip into Tottenham.I was determined to dominate this gig. It was looking doubtful by the first interval. The opening act, who had done a great job, spent nearly half of his set on a drunken member of a stag group (of course) but the annoying thing about this particular heckler was that he was relentless. He wouldn’t stay down. He was like some sort of Zombie boxer or those bop bag punch me clowns that comes back up once you punch it down. Then the drunken heckler approached the opening act and apologised and told him that the stag group had dared him to mess up the first act. I was the bull. He was the red flag. This was the straw that broke the camel’s back. This was the last heckler I was going to entertain. So when I went on stage I revealed to the audience that I had also been dared that evening. “Somebody dared me not to kick a c*%t in his face.” They were completely cooperative the rest of the evening and funny, this was the move that got me hired back. Haaaa! They never told me about this job at career day.

FRIDAY 28TH JUNE UNTIL SATURDAY 27TH JULY

The Postcard – A Voyage Of Discovery. Curated by Gail-Nina Anderson. The postcard is the piece of mail we prop up on the mantelpiece or stick to the fridge door, usually more of a greeting than a message, a few words on the reverse of an image, a sign that someone is thinking of us. Every postcard also represents a moment of choice, encapsulating the process when we thought this particular image would be the one to send - the card we select for a particular recipient says a vast amount about our relationship to them. And the choice made by the publisher, who has to consider a card likely to sell. This opens up some fascinating speculations about the taste of the time. This exhibition offers a light-hearted exploration of why postcards appeal, inviting speculation about our own choices and collections. Touching Colour. To coincide with the Congress of the International Colour Association (AIC) being held in Newcastle in July 2013, this

Jani Ruscica. Ruscica’s works reveal or essentially strip images of their meanings, and at the same time are assigned new meanings through a layered use of source materials. Ruscica’s works remind us that it is not important how much we see or consume things, but that we look at and listen to them carefully. Stephenson Works, South Street, Newcastle

Moda WK. In Moda WK artists Holly Antrum, Nadia Hebson and Titania Seidl respond to the legacy of little known British artist Winifred Knights (1899-1947). Knights was the first woman painter to hold a Rome Scholarship; noted for both her meticulous draughtsmanship and her unique sense of dress, Knights represented Britain at the 1925 Paris Exposition des Arts Décoratifs. Completing just seven major works in her lifetime, her masterpiece The Deluge is held in the Tate Collection. In the mid 1930s Knights collaborated with the Swedish interior designer Rolf Engströmer and the Italian decorator Peter Malacrida on the interior decoration of Eltham Palace, the Courtauld family’s Art Deco residence in South London. Moda WK explores the possibilities of ‘subjective biography’, or responding emotionally and intuitively to a person’s life and work, as well as the creative significance of female friendship. UNTIL SUNDAY 30TH JUNE

West End Stories. What’s so special about the West End? What gives it its unique character? Who built the West End and what is its story? A new exhibition created with people from the West End of Newcastle seeks to answer these questions and reveals stories about life in the West End. The exhibition presents films, objects and photographs that uncover the rich and diverse heritage of the area, including

photographs by the late Jimmy Forsyth, who documented city life; and objects, which reveal the West end’s Roman past. Look out for our programme of talks and events to complement this exhibition. Discovery Museum, Blandford Square, Newcastle. www.twmuseums.org.uk/discovery

There’s not much missing from NE1, indeed the cultural heartbeat of the region is now equipped to satisfy almost any craving you could possibly have, no matter how outlandish. However, pacing the streets in the later hours of the evening left tea-lovers with the option of wading into a bar with a kettle, or sitting on a bench with a styrofoam cup.But now, thanks to the Quilliam Brothers and Newcastle University, there’s a beautiful and serene tea house occupying number 1 Eldon Place that’ll furnish you with all manner of beverages from 7am until 1am. They’ve over 100 teas already, with new ones being added all the time, and

they’ve even got, as they put it, “some lush scran” for the peckish amongst you.

They’ve even converted the downstairs into an art gallery, which is currently hosting the

work of a number of talented local artists, and there’s a 20 person cinema (complete with a few beanbags) that’ll be showing free films. With plans to expand their remit to offering outside catering, hosting events and housing live music,

Quilliam Brothers is the peaceful eye to the city centre’s storm, and is sure to

become the worst kept secret in town.

The Pirates Of Penzance. This lavish new production from Scottish Opera, D’Oyly Carte and the producers of the recent smash hit South Pacific gives you Gilbert & Sullivan as it’s meant to be – pure, uncomplicated fun! A young man bound by an overactive sense of duty, a soft-hearted pirate king with a hopeless band of rogues at his side, a beautiful young girl, a very modern major-general and an ineffectual bevy of policemen…add a plot hinging on the technicalities of having a birthday on the 29th of February and we’re just about there. What could possibly go wrong? 7.30pm, from £17. Theatre Royal, Grey Street, Newcastle. www.theatreroyal.co.uk

MONDAY 1ST UNTIL SATURDAY 6TH JULY

The Pitmen Painters. In 1934, a group of Ashington miners hired a professor to teach an art appreciation evening class. Rapidly abandoning theory in favour of practice, the pitmen began to paint. Within a few years the most avant-garde artists became their

friends and their work was acquired by prestigious collections; but every day they worked, as before, down the mine. Examining the lives of a group of ordinary men who do extraordinary things, The Pitmen Painters is a humorous, deeply moving and timely look at art, class and politics. 7.30pm, from £9. Theatre Royal, Grey Street, Newcastle. www.theatreroyal.co.uk
