IMPORTANT NEWS ABOUT THE BUDGET:

The Finance Committee met at 5:30pm on November 14th. In

attendance were Gabi Priesgen, Scott Lopas, Tom Hostad,

Lynn Nettesheim, and Don Horen (liaison to the Council).

This meeting involved reviewing the proposed budget created by Gabi. After much discussion a

CALL TEAM:

Call Team: Don Horen, Jenny Nettesheim, Rusty Mehlberg, Alex Burton, Linda Krohn, Rod Lehl

Their meetings begin with Scripture and prayer. John 14:26; John 3:5,6; Acts 4:31; I Thessalonians 5:19; Titus 3:6

Holy Spirit, You are God. We praise you because you are holy, and we thank you for dwelling in our hearts. Thank you for working in our lives. Help us to see you more clearly – to recognize your movement in our lives. Make us more sensitive to you so we can follow you more closely. We ask you for your help and comfort tonight. You know our concerns and anxieties very well. Help us to rest in your comfort knowing that what we decide will be your will. Help us to walk in your way, the Spirit of God. Grow good fruit in our lives. You are the one who produces these in us: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. We cannot live out these things on our own; we need you.

In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

FROM Craig Ruegg, President of the Congregation:

Happy Holidays everyone, The year is quickly coming to a close, and we all have things to be thankful for. I would like to let everyone know that the plans for selling the parsonage are moving along very well. The city voted unanimously to approve rezoning of the property, which is a wonderful thing. The call committee has been doing a fantastic job, and hopefully in the next few weeks we might be at a position to call a new Pastor (fingers crossed). (SEE FRONT PAGE FOR MORE INFORMATION) I wish all of you and your families a happy and healthy holiday season!

From the desk of a

colleague in ministry,

Marie Leafblad of St.

Luke’s in Slinger.

This Advent at Redeemer is filled with hope – HOPE – HOPE - HOPE !!

Advent is always about hope, a two-way hope. Hope in anticipation of the birth of our Savior in Bethlehem. Hope of our Savior coming again in majesty and authority, once and for all.

This year there is the added excitement of anticipation of our new pastor coming.

Advent begins the new year, the new church year. Think about the church year just concluded – the well project and Daisy Scouts and H.E.L.P. Corner and mission partnership with St John LC and revised Sunday mornings and hosting/joining in ecumenical ministry and thanking a dear colleague for almost four decades of service and ….. That’s along with all the ministry Redeemer has done or been part of for years – Hartford Food Pantry and special giving and Community Meal and Big Brothers / Big Sisters and our radio broadcast and …..

As I told you’all at the congregation meeting in September, I will be finished at Redeemer at the end of Decem-ber. There will likely be a space of time at the beginning of 2019 where you will have supply pastors, until God willing, the new pastor is set to start. Synod staff will work with you on the transition time. And, remember, there are excellent, gracious pastors all around Redeemer: Fr. David, Fr. Lars, Pastor Stephanie, Pastor Jim, Pastor Joy at St Luke. Plus, there is plenty of spiritual strength among the sisters and brothers in Christ at Redeemer.

I encourage you to hearken to the gifts / strengths / assets of Redeemer we identified along the way.

I encourage you to lift up and celebrate the big ways and quiet ways you touch lives with the love of Jesus.

I encourage you to continually remind yourselves that this church is here for us to serve as Jesus served.

I encourage you to be abundantly generous just as God has blessed you abundantly. I encourage each adult to make special effort to nurture Redeemer’s youngsters and teens. We have kids with the potential to make huge differences in the world, including through church vocations (future pas-tors). Likewise, I encourage Redeemer’s kids to get your butts in the pew.

I encourage you to offer the time / talent / treasure God gives you with joy and exuberance.

I encourage you to be faithful just as God has been faithful for 99 years.

Thank you to the excellent call team. I sure enjoyed being with the confirmation students. Grateful to Lori and

Phyllis for dedication and skill for the radio broadcast of the 8:00 service. Very proud of my buddy, Anne, for

years of service of one kind and now launching into other avenues of service. I thank the church council for flexi-

bility which allowed me to spend time with my mom. Next for me is entering my 9th year as a Menards morning

stocker, some rest, cleaning in the house, likely another interim pastorate beginning in the spring, reconnecting

with my home congregation Lutheran Church of the Great Spirit. And, it’s time to sign up for Medicare.

I expect to hear great things about Redeemer. God’s Peace, PJB

DECEMBER SERVICE NOTES God beyond time, help us to live in the tension between what you have done and what you will do, and into the truth that Christ will come again. Amen. The above prayer is part of the ELCA Advent studies. I thought it fits what our congregation is going through. It reminds us that while we are going through changes, there is hope and a future for us. Please pick up your family’s Advent Calendar at church this weekend. For more in-depth readings go to the ELCA website (elca.org) and search for “Advent Resources”. November Special Giving was for Homeless Veterans. Thank you all so much for your generous donations! I have sorted out the donations (please excuse them being laid out in the Fellowship Hall) and will use the money given to purchase the items we need to fill all 25 backpacks. Each backpack will contain the following items: Hat, scarf or neck warmer, gloves, socks, hand warmers, t-shirts, toothbrush and toothpaste, dental floss, soap, shampoo, conditioner, lotion, Chapstick, body wash, Kleenex, deodorant, and many other assorted items. All will be packed into a string bag for distribution at our partner church St. John’s Lutheran in Milwaukee. They will be a great addition to the Plarn Mats that are being made. Please watch for an announcement about the day we will put these together. I am pleased to report that H.E.L.P. Corner @Redeemer is getting busier. We are receiving a lot of phone calls and new clients every week. The Daisy Scouts are flourishing here at Redeemer. This last month they colored the cards to put in the Veterans Bags we are packing. They are requesting to change meeting nights to two Thursday nights a month. Please notify Sheila if this is a conflict with any other group.

As we go into the Christmas season, we are so Blessed to see the growth and new outreach at Redeemer in the last year. We have helped so many in our town, state and the world. Thank You for your continuing support and donations. Yours in Service, Sheila Bauer and John Burton

December Special Giving:

God’s Global Barnyard

HARTFORD CHRISTMAS COMMITTEE “GIVING TREE” PROJECT Please look for the “Giving Tree” in the Narthex. Pick a tag to help a needy family at Christmas. Each gift tag lists up to 3 gift or clothing items—please purchase NEW, UNWRAPPED items from that list only—no food or candles, please! - and make sure to attach the label to the unwrapped gift before you bring it back into church. Below is a sample gift tag:

December Special Giving (back by popular demand) will be designated to God’s Global Barnyard. So you are not sure what to give that person who has every-thing? Give the gift of helping others. Purchase an animal through ELCA God’s Global Barnyard. The animals purchased will be distributed through ELCA Missionaries in the US and around the world. The families which receive them are taught how to care for them and to sustainably harvest products from them, which are used for their own families and for sale. For example: a goat can provide milk, cheese, fiber, and more goats. Please use the bulletin insert and pew envelopes to purchase animals. Gift cards and tree ornaments to announce your gift will be available in the Narthex by the Global Barnyard Tree. See Sheila with any questions.

MISSION PARTNER—ST. JOHN’S, WEST MILWAUKEE

PLARN MATS FOR THE HOMELESS VETS

We have been meeting for 10 weeks in the Fellowship Hall on Wednesday afternoons at 1:30 and in the evenings at 6:30 pm for two or three hours or less. There are 10 ladies from church who have worked sorting grocery bags, folding, cutting them into strips, then rolling the strips into balls to be crocheted. We have a lady coming from Allenton and a man from Jackson that come to help us. However, we need people to crochet these mats. I did not crochet before—but it’s not hard to learn, and I have made 8 mats so far! It is easy to learn and you can work on them at home. We have talked with women from other churches who are working on this project, and some would like to join us in the Fellowship Hall when we start up again. We won’t be meeting at church for the whole month of December, but will be starting up again in January. For information: call Neva Rublee (673-2656) or Pat Dobbe (679-640-4015).

WHAT IS A CHILD'S SMILE WORTH?

Christmas is a time to rekindle the spirit of giving from the heart. You can bring smiles this Christmas to the faces of children

from your local families in need. You can enable them to experience the wonder of Christmas that thrilled us when we were

kids and we now enjoy again every year with our children and grandchildren.

Lots of charitable efforts take place in the big cities during the Christmas season, and thousands answer the call to well publi-

cized disasters such as school shootings. There are families with children in your community and mine that due to hardships

of recent death, unemployment, injury, disability, divorce, etc, will not be able to enable their children to experience the abso-

lute joy, happiness, and wonder of Christmas that most of us take for granted. Let's not let them fall through the cracks. We

can't solve all their problems, but we can bring a smile to these children's faces on Christmas Eve or Christmas morning. This

is a program of individuals, local churches, schools, and other organizations working together in caring for our communities.

For the seventh year, St. Olaf's Church is again coordinating a program to collect funds to buy and distribute gift cards to lo-

cal families in need so they can buy Christmas presents for their children. As in the past, I am challenging my church (St.

Olaf’s Congregation) to match the donations made by residents and organizations in our communities. St Olaf's has more

than matched them in each of the last four years. All money received goes to purchase gifts. Last year, we distributed

$10,235 worth of gift cards and also wrapped presents, warm mittens and caps from people and organizations who love this

program. They were distributed to the parents of 244 children from 96 local rural families in need in time for them to buy

Christmas presents for their kids.

Redeemer Lutheran is tithing some of its foundation interest to the

“A Child’s Smile” project (St. Olaf’s Lutheran in Rubicon). Jenny

Nettesheim has kindly forwarded this article, written by Roger John-

son, coordinator for the program. This is the seventh year for “A

Child’s Smile”. Scrip cards, warm caps & mittens, and other donat-

ed presents will be given to local rural families in need so they can

provide presents to their children who otherwise won’t experience

the joy of Christmas.

“The world's largest collection of ocean garbage is growing. The world's largest collection of ocean garbage is growing. The world's largest collection of ocean garbage is growing.

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch, a collection of plastic, floating trash halfway between Hawaii and California, has grown to more than 600,000 square miles, a study published Thursday found. That's twice the size of Texas.

Winds and converging ocean currents funnel the garbage into a central location, said study lead author Laurent Lebreton of the Ocean Cleanup Foundation, a non-profit or-ganization that spearheaded the research.

First discovered in the early 1990s, the trash in the patch comes from around the Pacific Rim, including nations in Asia and North and South America, Lebreton said.

The patch is not a solid mass of plastic. It includes about 1.8 trillion pieces and weighs 88,000 tons — the equivalent of 500 jumbo jets. The new figures are as much as 16 times higher than previous estimates. “ From internet reprint of USA Today article

One expression of the amount of trash we humans are bestowing on God’s creation is in the USA Today

excerpt below, which is followed (on the next page) by some things we can and should be doing about

it.

Reduce – Reuse – Recycle is not directly from the Bible, but it fits with Scripture’s teaching about

stewardship of God’s blessings. I hope the Three R’s are active in your household; we have plenty of room

for improvement at Redeemer. Here is one small way: in the hallway near the Gathering Room are

two bins, one for waste and one for recycling. Paper, aluminum cans, 1-2-4-5 plastics get rinsed

out - then placed in recycling. Otherwise it goes in the waste. The less I need to go through it all to put

stuff where it is supposed to go, the better. — Pastor Jon

Aluminum Can Money

A much-needed 100-cup coffee pot was just purchased for the church. The cost was around $100.00. Money collected from the sale of our recycled aluminum cans for this year was $47.00.

That money was given towards the cost of the coffee pot. The Bible Study group donated $25.00, and individuals donated the rest of the money.

When the storage room off the kitchen was painted, aluminum can money in the amount of $280.00 went towards that. Plants are sometimes purchased with money also.

When you bring cans to church, you can place them by the coat rack downstairs.

Make Your White Christmas Green!

St. John’s UCC, 228 W State Street, is again collecting and recycling non-

working Christmas lights. They can be brought to the church and placed in

the trailer parked next to the church garage.

8 Redeemer Lutheran Church

Rick Meyers, the City of Milwaukee’s sanitation services manager, fielded many questions from people on a recent Doors Open Milwaukee tour about recycling guidelines. Here are some of them.

• Put pull-tabs into the empty can. The tabs are too small to make it through the system on their own, but if they are in the can, they make it through recycling. If bottles have screw-on tops, keep them on the contain-ers. They are too small to make it through the sorting process alone.

• Aluminum cans should not be crushed. If they are crushed, they will not be properly detected by the 3D im-aging.

• If you have shredded paper, compress it tightly in a rolled paper bag. If it is loose, it will not make it through recycling but will end up in the landfill.

• There is no need to remove labels from containers.

• Be sure to rinse out containers. If they are not rinsed, bacteria form and create unnecessary odors and con-tamination in the facility.

• Sometimes people will throw half-used or unused containers of food into recycling. Besides being messy and a source of contamination, these items will not make it through the automated sorting process be-cause they are too heavy. They will not be recycled and will end up in the landfill.

• Aluminum siding scraps cannot be recycled.

• Do not put one-gallon disposable fuel tanks into recycling. They contain a residue of flammable liquid. The recycling facility gets about 70 of these dangerous containers a day. Most of them are picked out in the pre-sort, but some do get through. Meyers says there is at least one fire per month caused by these tanks if they make their way to the unforgiving baler jaws.

• Do not deposit plastic bags. They are the bane of the recycling facility. On a daily basis, workers have to wear harnesses to lower down into jammed equipment so they can safely free the entangled bags. On a re-cent gusty day, bags began billowing out the facility and into the street; workers had to chase and capture the bags. Plastic bags can be taken back to local stores or visit plasticfilmrecycling.org to find a convenient location for plastic bag recycling. From Shepherd Express article

Redeemer’s college kids: All members can be praying for our young women and men away at school. They are a bunch of bright students, with interesting goals for their lives. Pray for all of them, for sure, plus how about picking out one of the students and contacting them to say you will be remembering them specifically in your daily pray-ers. The best person to talk to about our college kids is Sheila Bauer, besides, of course, their folks.

Parents: Please get your son or daughter’s latest email address, phone number, and mailing address to the church office. We need this to stay in touch, send The Herald, and send care packages during the academic year.

December 16 In Isaiah 12 the author calls out that "God is my salvation." Since we know that we can also trust that He will take care of all our earthly concerns. We are called to sing His praises for the things He has done because He came into our world at Christmas.

December 23 Mary's song to Elizabeth in Luke, The Mag-nificat, which shows us God loves us as we are. His saving judgment is for all - bringing us down from selfish pride in which we don't see God or our neighbor, and lifting us up from the shame and sorrow that distorts our world view that no one - not even God - could love us.

December 31 The holy life expected of us requires putting off sinful activities and putting on other ac-tions. It is like taking off old dirty clothes and putting on new clean ones. Only when the sins of the flesh have been put to death can a Christ like life come alive, This is what sanctification is about - holiness in the heart and purity in the body.

Seeds of Ministry Nuggets

December 2 Today's gospel for the first Sunday of Advent pre-sents a paradox as it speaks of apocalyptic and end times as we begin to prepare for the Christmas sea-son and the coming of the Christ child. What is the author telling us? The gospels are full of similar par-adoxes. Can you think of, or find, others?

December 9 The word of God comes to John in the wilderness just as it so often had to Hebrew prophets in the Old Testament. The desert is a place of scarcity and

desolation yes it also a place of safety and divine providence throughout the bible. For us the world can be like a desert - a place of desolation, scarcity, hunger, and violence. We might wonder if God is at work here with us but this world is right where God provides us with what we need so that we might be "a voice crying out."

ADULT BIBLE STUDY with Pastor Jon

Adult Bible Study meets in the Gathering Room Sundays at 8:30. We are using the book Jesus: A Pilgrimage by Fr. James Martin. Each chapter recounts the author’s visit to an important place in the gospel narratives, e.g. Jordan River, Nazareth, along with readily understood scholarly background and reflection on the stories about Jesus that happened there. A very pleasant, interesting way to learn more about Jesus Christ.

The more folks who participate, the greater the opportunity to learn from one another. Everyone is welcome any Sunday. ADULT BIBLE STUDY will NOT meet on Sunday, December 30th.

Cookoff Enter your own chili (regular, chicken/white chili or vegetarian) in the competition—or just come to sample the chili and support our campus ministries at UW-Milwaukee and Marquette University! Mount Hope Lutheran Church in West Allis.

January 27th: Reconciling in Christ Sunday Visit Facebook and search for @GMS.ReconcilinginChrist for more information.

February 16th: Together in Mission Over 100 of your fellow congregations will come together to participate in workshops ranging from the practical (congregational budgeting, active shooter training) to the spiritual. This event is open to all interested members of any congregation and takes place at St. John’s in Brookfield.

May 31st—June 1st: 2019 Greater Milwaukee Synod Assembly If you have never attended a Synod Assembly before because it conflicted with your work schedule, we have great news: for the next several years, Synod Assembly will now be held on Friday night through all day Saturday to accommodate working members. Another change: this year we will be at the Italian Community Center in Milwaukee (parking lot available). And yet another change—whereas Redeemer was limited to two layperson voters in the past, this year they will be able to send three, as long as one of them is under the age of 30. Here is a great opportunity to show youth/young adults what ‘being church’ is about!

August 5th—10th: 2019 ELCA Churchwide Assembly Milwaukee has been chosen to host the entire ELCA (at the Wisconsin Center) for this huge event un-der the theme, “We are church together.” In addition to hosting and worshipping with hundreds of ELCA members from around the world, there will be a Bishop’s election as current Bishop Elizabeth Eaton runs for re-election. Although voting positions are not generally open, there will many opportunities to visit—and we will be looking for volunteers in many areas, including hospitality hosts to talk up the great opportunities in Southeastern Wisconsin! More information in early 2019 will be found at elca.org/ChurchwideAssembly.
