UNFASHIONABLY LATE... TO HIS OWN WEDDING!

This just in! The wedding last Sunday in Padua that had everybody’s attention, gossip and buzzing ended up a disaster! The groom (Petruchio) horrified everyone in showing up hours late. He showed no remorse to the fact that he showed up late to his own wedding, and was completely apathetic towards Katherine’s disappointment. One of the witnesses invited to the wedding told The Padua Herald exclusively “I was taken back by his sheer rudeness and vulgarity. He came in as though he was entering his own household, with no apology or excuse for his immensely late presence to his own wedding!” In addition to him showing up late, he dressed in the foulest habiliments.” Many of the guests claim “I honestly thought it was a circus clown coming for entertainment when I saw him from a distance!”

While waiting for his arrival, the groom’s assistant Biondello announces, “Why, Petruchio is coming in a new hat and an old jerkin, a pair of old breeches thrice turned, a pair of boots that have been candle cases, one buckled, another laced; an old rusty sword ta'en out of the town armory, with a broken hilt and chapeless; with two broken points; his horse hipped, with an old mothy saddle and stirrups of no kindred, besides possessed with the glanders and like to mose in the chine, troubled with the lampass, infected with the fashions, full of wingdalls, sped with spavins, rayed with yellows, past cure of the fives, stark spoiled with the staggers, begnawn with the bots, swayed in the back and shoulder-shotten, near-legged before and with a half-checked bit and a headstall of sheeps leather, which, being restrained to keep him from stumbling, hath been often burst, and now repaired with knots, one girth six times pieced, and a woman’s crupper of velour, which hath two letters for her name fairly set down in studs, and here and there pieced with packthread.” (Shakespeare.3.2.40-62) And when Petruchio did arrive in this appalling attire, everybody at the wedding was expecting a valid explanation for his being late, and a legitimate reason for it as well, and a justification for his attire. However, when he arrived all he had to say was that she was marrying him and not his clothes! We sat down with Petruchio after the wedding and he defended himself, “I have yet to understand the basis of the fuss blown way out of proportion! I showed up, as I promised and regardless of my timing or attire, I married Katherine!” We then sat down with Katherine, “ It was quite embarrassing at first! I was unsure as to whether he would show up or not! But when he did I was quite appalled! He was hours late and his clothes were awful! Further, he refused to stay for the reception dinner! He insisted on leaving early and taking me with him! I protested until he explained that I was now his property and that as his property it was his duty to protect me. This flattered me and I was immediately putty in his hands as I realized that he did care for me, and so I went.” We can’t help but question his so called “protection” and “love” for Katherine. We find it quite peculiar that he married the woman who is portrayed to be such a shrew; we understand that she comes from a family of great wealth. Is he only marrying her for the money? Last Sunday, after the bride and groom ditched their already marred wedding reception headlines were made, questions were asked and the community was in utter shock! Petruchio and his new wife Katherine were married last Sunday in Padua. Not only did the groom show up hours late, but he came in appalling clothing and he later left the wedding skipping the reception and took Katherine with him. All of Padua began to question whether Petruchio truly loved Katherine or whether he was only marrying her for her abundant inheritance and her esteemed family. The Padua Herald took a closer look by visiting the new couple’s household. Their relationship was easily the most bewildering thing ever. During the week we spent at their residence, Katherine did not eat a single meal or sleep a single minute. Petruchio explained to Katherine when he refused to let her eat dinner, “I tell thee, Kate, ’twas burnt and dried away. And I expressly am forbid to touch it, for it engenders choler, planteth anger; and better ’twere that both of us did fast, since of ourselves, ourselves are choleric, than feed it with such over-roasted flesh. Be patient, tomorrow ’t shall be mended, and, for this night, we’ll fast for company.” (Skakespeare.4.1.106-113). Like in this example, Petruchio continued to procrastinate her eating, and he did the same for her sleeping. He claimed the sheets were not worthy enough for her to sleep in. He continued to put off and delay her sleep and consumption of food. Katherine was so beguiled by him that she remained oblivious to his arrant cunning smiles and satisfaction when she obeyed him. We pondered over what was happening, and we concluded that it was no coincidence that she had not eaten or slept for so long, and that he was doing it purposefully for an unknown reason. But what? We also took notice of the fact that she consistently obeyed him and went along with what he said including atrocious statements such as, “Good Lord, how bright and goodly shines the moon!” (Shakespeare.4.5.2). He said this in mid afternoon when it was clear the sun was out, and Katherine responded, “The moon? The sun! It is not

moonlight now.” (Shakespere.4.5.3). Petruchio replied that it was whatever he desired it to be. When Katherine ceased her challenges and remained silent, our reporters were astonished given her shrew nature while Petruchio smiled a crafty half smile and smirked. We wondered whether they have an abusive relationship or whether Petruchio truly does not allow her to eat or sleep because he loves her.

The Tamed Shrew

No one is permitted to marry the younger sister until the older one is to be wedded. New rule by their father, Baptista. Baptista has a very strict rule stating that no one shall marry the ingenious, affable younger daughter; Bianca, before Katherine, the older sister. Many men in Padua were upset with this rule since many people wanted to marry Bianca and not Katherine. Katherine is an insolent shrew, who has a terrible personality and many people dislike her because of her behavior and attitude. Unlike, the lovely Bianca who is wonderful to everybody she knows. Nobody wants to marry Katherine; so many people thought that it would be impossible to get to Bianca. Lucentio, a man who is madly in love with Bianca cannot marry her yet because Katherine has not yet found a wed. Tranio; Lucentio’s servant, tries to help Lucentio figure out ways to win Bianca. He tells Lucentio about the father’s rule, “Master, your love must live a maid at home, and therefore has he closely mewed her up, because she will not be annoyed with suitors.” (Shakespeare.1.1.8.155-157) Lucentio angrily replies saying, “Ah, Tranio, what a cruel father’s he!” (Shakespeare.1.1.8.158) Baptista’s rule is completely unfair. Baptista shouldn’t stop the younger sister from getting married, just because the older one is impossible to deal with. They are two entirely different people who both should get married. There shouldn’t be a rule saying who gets married first or last, it should be on whom finds love first. People in Padua are arguing saying that Baptista created this rule because he wanted to get rid of Katherine quickly, and maybe the man who is completely in love with Bianca could help Baptista find Katherine a groom. Other people are saying that Baptista probably just doesn’t want Katherine to be upset that her own younger sister has found a wed before she has. Nobody really understands why he has made such rule, but we know that he has many reasons to it. We interviewed Baptista, Lucentio and Bianca to ask them what they think about this rule.

Lucentio: “When I first saw Bianca, I was love-struck and I was sure that she was the one for me. I was in love with her from the day I met her and I was planning on doing whatever I could to win her heart. By then, I heard about Baptista’s rule and how he has not allowed Bianca to marry before Katherine. I was devastated and very upset because I find this rule

entirely unfair and unreasonable because I don’t believe that Bianca should have to wait for her older sister to get married. The first person to find a husband should be the first to get married. But because I love Bianca, I will respect her father and follow his rules.”

Baptista: “I think this rule is completely fair. I have many reasons to why this is fair, for example, I wouldn’t want my older daughter to watch her younger sister get married before her, and since Bianca has many suitors and they want to marry her. I’m sure that at least one of them could look for a husband for Katherine, if they are really willing on marrying Bianca.”

Bianca: “I really don’t like my father’s rule. I am very upset that I can’t get married before Katherine. I find it unfair for me and I really want to get married. But because I love my sister and I wouldn’t want her to hate me anymore than she already does, I am willing to wait till she gets married so that she won’t be upset.

Results: Katherine hasn’t really approved of the wedding but he insisted on marrying her. The next Sunday, Katherine and Petruchio finally got married leading to who shall marry Bianca afterwards. Bianca had four suitors who really want to marry her; Gremio, Lucentio, Tranio and Hortensio. Lucentio won her heart and so they got married the following week. After publication, it’s been revealed that Hortensio’s friend, the greedy Petruchio came to visit and has heard about the rich Katherine and so he decided to marry her claiming that he could handle her.

No Marriage For the Younger One!

Today, we are discussing Bianca Minola and Lucentio’s wedding. These lovely couples seemed like the ideal couple, but are they really? The wedding started off on a bad foot when Lucentio’s REAL father interrupted the party. He got wind of the wedding from Petruchio and Katherine, who met him on their way to it. We have exclusively interviewed the real Vincentio to get his opinion straight to you!PH: So what do you think about the wedding itself ? If you had known about it in the first place would you have enjoyed it?V: Well, I was very preoccupied because I wasn’t really invited to my own son’s wedding and during the wedding; there was quite a fiasco between Katherine and some widow during the dinner.PH: so how did you feel that your own son tried to make a fake of you for his wedding?V: I had a mix of feelings. I didn’t know what to think. I was angry and hurt at the same time. But let me tell you a little secret, I was also a bit proud that my son could think of a plan as clever as that. But I was mostly angry that he doesn’t want me at his wedding.PH: Wow, that must be tough. So what was that little spat between Kate and the widow like?V: Well it was surprisingly riveting. That Katherine can throw some pretty good punches! Riveting as it was, it was unnecessary; that widow should not have said those things and Kate should not have lost her temper! It’s a wedding for goodness sake! PH: Well thank you Vincentio for sharing your opinions with us!That was Vincentio, the father of Lucentio recapping Bianca’s interesting wedding for us. So, hearing about this wedding, we know that there were a few bumps in the perfect wedding, like Katherine’s little spat with Hortensio’s wife, Vinecentio’s discovery, and the wager with the men. This was a ridiculous wager, to see who’s wife was more obedient. With a small twist, it turns out Kate was the most obedient. So all in all, this wedding had a few shocking twists, fights and wagers. Now we are going to interview Bianca Minola, the bride herself, about how she believes the wedding went.PH: So Bianca, how do you think the wedding went? Were the guests impressed?

B: I really liked my wedding. I mean I married the man I love, should that matter most? But the only thing about the wedding that I didn’t enjoy was the wager between the husbands. I mean are woman dogs? This isn’t obedience school!PH: What about the fight between your sister and that widow?B: I didn’t mind that, actually provided some in-dining entertainment.PH: And Vincentio’s little discovery? How did you feel about that?B: I really didn’t care, that’s my father’s problem not mine. Why should I care about Lucentio’s father? I probably wont see him a lot so whatever.PH: Um, well okay, thank you Bianca.So now having interviewed two people; the father of the groom and the bride, we have positive and negative opinions. we have come to the conclusion that the wedding was both a dream and a nightmare.

The Miraculously Altered Shrew

Katherine Minola used to be a massive, hated, shrew. She would tie her sister up and smash lutes on people’s heads. What happened? Ever since she married Petruchio of Verona, she has become different woman. All this mischief and misbehavior has stopped. Some say that love as changed her, but Hortensio says otherwise. We will now interview Petruchio to get the inside scoop of how one man accomplish so much with such an impossible woman.PH: Hello, Petruchio of Verona! The world would like to know how you succeeded in taming such and unruly young woman.P: Well, it wasn’t that hard! All I did was treat her like a falcon! I starved her and didn’t let her sleep.PH: What? Is that supposed to mean something? Like a strategy?P: Well, no not really. Kate is just another woman who thinks that she is rebellious, but really, she isn’t. if you can conquer her will than you can conquer her heart.PH: What does that mean?P: Simple. It just means that once she gives up her opinions, she is yours. My Kate loves me because I did the right thing and made her in to a good, lovable, popular woman. She should appreciate how much I love her.PH: Okay then, thank you Petruchio.

Well, that was Petruchio telling us about his tactics with taming is unbearable wife. Although, we have come to the conclusion that this woman has definitely changed for the better, even if the tactics were a bit unruly. Maybe it was a good thing that that Petruchio used these extreme ways to make Kate obey. They say to fight fire with fire, so that is what Pertuchio did, and Kate is definitely the fire that Baptisa didn’t expect.

“Is it for him you do envy me so? Nay, then, you jest, and now I well perceive you have but jested with me all this while. I prithee , sister Kate, untie my hands.”Bianca (Act 2 Sc1, Line 20)

As seen in Bianca’s words, Kate was unruly and abusive. But what we don’t know is what Kate thought about being changed so drastically by the man she ‘loves’. So, to find out, we are going to interview Katherine Minola herself to find out.PH: So Katherine, how did you feel when Petruchio was obviously tying to change you?K: Well, I didn’t really know he was doing this on purpose. He did it quite cleverly, so I found out much later. But sometimes I did suspect him of starving me on purpose.PH: What was your reaction when you found out about your husband’s little scheme?K: At first, I was a bit outraged, but at I began to think about it, I realized he was doing it for my own good. Before, I knew I was a bad person. I knew people talked about me behind my back and called me bad names, like shrew, and wasp. I was just so irritating that everyone thought my sister was so angelic and beautiful.

PH: Wow. So now do you feel that you have changed for the better?K: Yes, actually I do. Now people don’t call me things and I learned to control myself, and most importantly, ignore my sister.

Well, now we know that Katherine Minola has indeed changed for the better! Hopefully she will stay that way with the help of her husband.
