The Herald of the
Grand Royal Arch Chapter of Massachusetts
Fall 2010 Edition
Thoughts of the Grand High Priest Dear Companions: We are pleased to present to you a new edition of "The Herald". In order to save on postage and printing costs it will be created in an electronic format to be distributed by emails and to be posted online. You may have a copy emailed to you by providing your email address to the York Rite Boston Office or by simply going to www.gracma.org and downloading a copy. If you are requesting to be put on the email list just say so in your email and put in the subject line: "Subscription to The Herald".
Current Chapter High Priests, Chapter Secretaries, current District Deputy Grand High Priests, the current Deputy Grand High Priest, Grand King, Grand Scribe, and Past Grand High Priests will be automatically on the email list unless they "opt out" or do not have email addresses filed with the York Rite Boston Office Emails returned undeliverable will be deleted, so be sure if you change your email address you notify the York Rite Boston Office. "The Herald" is a work in progress. We wish to modernize it and to make it an informational source for Massachusetts Companions. To that end, it should also be a place where a variety of opinions may be expressed. Every Companion should be involved so Chapter Masonry can become a vibrant entity in Massachusetts and a provider of leadership for other jurisdictions. It is important that we look at, and get more involved in, not only what is going on in our state, but also other states and jurisdictions outside of the United States as well. The Grand Royal Arch Chapter of Massachusetts wishes to thank all those Masonic bodies and individuals who have donated to our York Rite Database Fund. We are approaching our goal of $50,000 by means of the $1000 plus donations we have been receiving. More is still needed. If your group or you are planning to make a donation, do not wait. We have already started the process of hiring MORI to do the work and supply the software. Companions, this will be a giant step forward for the Grand Chapter - made possible by your support - thank you.
Fraternally,
Lincoln K. Richards Lincoln K. Richards, Grand High Priest of Massachusetts

From the York Rite Office Companions, Good news: MORI is coming!! Wesley and I spent two days in Troy, New York with Enable Labs, training in MORI and sharing our “wish list” with them. The Grand High Priest has executed the necessary contracts and the first payment has been issued. This is a very exciting project that will move our Grand Chapter, Grand Council and Grand Commandery forward beyond our wildest expectations! It is absolutely amazing to us the tools this system will afford us and how much easier it will make ALL of our lives. Secretaries will no longer have to file paper reports, a change in address or membership status will automatically populate to all the appropriate bodies, local and jurisdictional. The Grand Secretary of Grand Lodge will communicate changes in Lodge status to our office and we can then make the changes right here, which will be alerted to you.
The 2011 Dues Cards have now been distributed to the Secretaries and Recorders of the Chapters and Councils. We apologize that there are still some significant errors in the sets that were sent to some of you, and we are aware that some are errors that have been noted in the past and submitted to us by the local Secretaries and Recorders. This appears to be a flaw in our current MS Access database, and it seems that no matter how many times we make the corrections, it reverts back to the error. Please continue to email us ONLY your corrections and we will try to issue new cards to you for the missing members. With MORI on its way, this will be the last year using our current slightly flawed database to generate the dues cards, so please bear with us just a little longer. Our Grand High Priest, Most Illustrious Grand Master and Grand Commander have been doing a terrific job out there raising lots of money for us for this project, which is costing about $50,000.00, and we’re about half way there. About 11 York Rite Bodies have donated, as well as several related bodies. We presently have 40 Chapters, 25 Councils and 29 Commanderies in our Grand Jurisdiction. Will you all PLEASE consider a donation to the Database Fund? This is a project that will be a wonderful benefit to all of us as we move forward. Please make checks payable to Grand Royal Arch Chapter of Mass., and ear mark it for the “Database Fund”. A list of Donors, to whom we owe so much, will be published in succeeding issues of “The Herald”. Thank you all for all that you do out there for York Rite Masonry!! Sincerely and Fraternally,
Bob Corr Grand Secretary/Grand Recorder

Working Together in Capitular Masonry
By R.E. Comp. David F. D’Amato, Pentalpha Royal Arch Chapter There are many Royal Arch Chapters in the state just getting by and some not, but in order to do so
they have to seek outside help in the districts and borrow manpower. Plus some of their work has a lot to be desired. Many people who join the York Rite see the deficiencies that we have and do not continue to stay and move on elsewhere. Our Chapters will still meet on their regular Convocations and confer the degrees just as they do now. That works. But what we need is a tool to affect how we operate keeping with the Grand Level requirements. Insuring 'Good degree work' 'Fraternal visits', and 'Chapter of instructions' with many in attendance.
We need to meet three times a year as a District. These three special Convocations are held at a
Capitular District Level with all the Chapters in a district attending. Any one of these events can be designated as fulfillment for the Instruction requirement for Chapter. Also one event of the three days can be used as a Fraternal Visit.... no business meetings. There will be no conflicts of dates and all requirements will be met. All that is required: That this structure be mandatory. All chapters in a Capitular District must attend these three meetings. This same concept could be used across the state meeting on different days to prevent conflicts.
The Grand High Priest can visit the whole state by attending six of these special convocations. The
District Deputy Grand High Priest can complete all his Fraternal visits in one night. He might even have a few people on his suite! The basic plan calls for a Royal Arch Chapter to meet at a district meeting three times a year. This example is for only one Capitular District. Using the 3rd Friday, as an example for the stated convocation but it has to be on the same date every 3rd month. This plan can be used across the whole state as long as each district meets on a different day. Example: September ‐ A Capitular district meets on the 3rd Friday for the Installation of Officers for all the Chapters in that Capitular District, or a Mark Master Mason Degree. January ‐ A Capitular District meets on the 3rd Friday to conver the Past Master and Most Excellent Master Degrees. April ‐ A Capitular District meets on the 3rd Friday to confer the Royal Arch Degree.
When a person joins a Chapter or even a Council or Commandery and during the ceremony they see only three people on the sidelines, they say to themselves: "What am I getting myself into!" We need better organization, a tool that will help the smaller institutions get their work done with many people attending.
There are good advantages with this idea / plan. A York Rite Mason could visit the whole state in one
month doing only 6 nights out. The order [rearrangement] of the meetings can be agreed upon if needed to accommodate the work at hand but each Capitular District has their three meetings.

The Role of Education as a Retention Tool in Chapter By Ex. Comp. Mark Z. Stought , St. Andrew’s Royal Arch Chapter
If we want to define York Rite’s place within the greater framework of Freemasonry, the best definition would be that it is a “teaching Rite.” Our degrees, rather than imparting new truths and ideas, simply expound upon those things that a Mason has already learned in his initial three degrees. This is especially true of the Capitular Degrees. As Chapter is the first step in the York Rite, we have a great opportunity to capitalize on that role: we can teach our members, and use that as a way to engage our Companions, retain our membership, and energize our meetings. Education doesn’t have to be complicated, either. All that is required is some simple planning: “who, what, where, when, and how.” The “why” is obvious – inasmuch as we rightly claim that the Chapter degrees are among the most beautiful degrees in Freemasonry, they are also among the most complicated, both in their background and their conferral. It is my firm belief that, just as when they were new candidates in Lodge, our new candidates need a helping hand when it comes to understanding exactly what is going on in Chapter. However, we cannot always ask them to take an extra night out a month to come to an educational meeting for Chapter – the reason Masons join any appendant body is to get more out of Masonry, so they tend to get fairly busy as a result. That restriction will aid in narrowing down the “when.” We have four degrees to confer and ten months in which to do so. That means that in any given Capitular year, there should be at least two months without degree work (assuming two classes per year and no combining of degrees). Take one or both of those months, and use them as educational opportunities. Prepare a program for your Chapter, and it will make a nice change from the usual. “OK,” you may say, “nice idea, but who’s going to do this?” The answer here is easy. Every Chapter has members who are interested in learning more about Masonry and telling other Masons about it. You should already know who they are, and if you don’t, ask! Doing the work is not that difficult – we have done this in my Chapter, and all the information is readily accessible. It can even be done as an activity by the recently exalted Companions as a joint activity. They might like the opportunity to jump right in and be active in some fashion, and just aren’t all that great at being proactive. Figuring out the “what” is the trickiest part; there are a lot of options for an educational night. Here’s some suggestions as starting points: look into what the ritual says in each degree, and find out where it comes from. Talk about your Chapter’s history. Talk about what the candidates are getting out of the degrees they are participating in every month. Whatever you do, though, be interactive with your members! Let people make comments, ask questions, and discuss things. Be prepared to answer questions or find the answer for next month. The best part is, if you don’t know an answer, the person who asked is going to have to come back again next month to find out, and now you’ve made coming to Chapter a habit for that person. I can only speak for my results, but when this was done at St. Andrew’s, we had seven out of eight of our newly exalted candidates come back on a night where there was no degree work. They all enjoyed it, and they’re still coming back. So our educational program became a retention tool, and we need better retention.
If Capitular Masonry has one fundamental and uncorrectable flaw, it is that it is the gateway to the York Rite. Therefore, Chapter can easily be relegated to nothing more than an entranceway or waypoint to the rest of what the York Rite has to offer. When we have the Capitular Degrees, Cryptic Degrees, and Commandery Orders all scheduled out for a group of candidates, they don’t necessarily get to stop and appreciate what they went through until the end of the process. As a result, they often neglect to come back to the earlier bodies (and Chapter in particular) because they’ve gotten involved elsewhere in the meantime. Sometimes people like certain aspects of the York Rite better than others: some like the Council degrees because they are short and to the point, and others find Commandery so different from the rest of Freemasonry that they just wash their hands of the York Rite entirely without giving the other bodies another chance. I make these statements not to cast aspersions on York Rite process or procedure, but to make sure that everyone is aware of these issues. They happen as a matter of course and we need to be cognizant of them in order to mitigate their effects. The solution is simple, but necessary: work around it! Simple may be obvious, but why is it necessary? Well, here’s an example: as High Priest, I can exalt 400 candidates in a year for my Chapter (with the proper dispensations), bring in 57 million dollars in dues as a result, and still have no officers or sideline. So, despite tripling my membership and making enough money to buy a new building, my Chapter is not successful. That’s because even though I can state very strongly to a new Companion (while he’s still excited and enthusiastic after his exaltation) that he should come back to Chapter, once a little bit of time passes, I really have to give him an incentive to come back other than merely seeing the degrees again. An educational program will fit this requirement nicely. An educational program doesn’t need to be overly complicated, heavily technological, or have any bells and whistles to be successful; it simply has to be enjoyable. Concern yourself much more with strong content and a passable presentation. What you do on your first attempt should not be exactly the same as what you do on your second, third, or 200th attempt. Learn what works and what doesn’t. A flexible, “living” program is going to serve your Chapter much better in the long run than a stagnant and repetitive one will. I hope that after reading this that you have found it useful in some fashion. For Capitular Masonry to be successful, it has to offer something, and what we offer is further education. All we need to do is get that education out to our members, and this is just one way to do it. (Continued from Page 4) There is nothing to say that a District could not visit another District in the state to get a degree
conferred to accomplish and speed up the progress.
This plan is a tool and will enhance the way we work. Maybe it will generate some interest from some of our older members who don't attend anymore! It definitely won't cost anything to try! Royal Arch Handbook Excerpts 14‐14 HOW TO SELECT A GOOD RITUALIST (Royal Arch Handbook, page 220) A good Chapter Ritualist (every Chapter should have one) must have most of the following qualifications: 1. A good knowledge of the ritual. 2. A good knowledge of the floor work. 3. A good knowledge of the equipment necessary for the work. 4. Be a good teacher. 5. A knowledge of the sword manual as prescribed by the Grand Chapter Exemplification Degree Team
(See Section 14‐ 18 reprinted below) 6. Must have plenty of patience and perseverance. 7. Must be willing to attend Chapter regularly. 8. Must be willing to attend rehearsals for degrees and the opening and closing of Chapter. 9. Should have a general knowledge of the Constitution and Digest of the Grand Chapter By‐Laws. 10. He should be a dedicated Royal Arch Mason, who can inspire members to be good Ritualists. 11. Above all, he should be an enthusiastic LEADER who can answer questions on the whys and wherefores of Capitular Masonry. 12. He should make it his responsibility to attend the Grand Chapter Degree Team rehearsals. 13. He should attend the Grand Chapter Semi‐annual and Annual Convocations. 14. Should have a knowledge of Chapter protocol as well as that of the Grand Chapter. 15. Should be present at the Grand Chapter of Instruction and should register as such on the attendance sheet. 16. He should be ready to assist and help the Chapter officers whenever needed. 14‐18 PROPER USE OF THE SWORD (Royal Arch Handbook, page 224) Certain officers of the Chapter are armed with swords> unfortunately, far too little attention is paid to the proper manner of handling them. The motions necessary or Chapter purposes may be readily learned, and the result will more than compensate for the time spent in acquiring them. The following will serve as a guide for self‐instruction. Draw Swords..... Seize the scabbard near the top with the left hand and grasp the handle of the sword with the right hand (the thumb of the right hand towards the floor). Draw the sword briskly and smoothly, raising the arm to its full extent at an angle of 45 degrees, the sword in a straight line with the arm and the back of the hand towards the right, make a slight pause; drop the left hand by the side while lowering the right hand and bringing the blade of the sword against the shoulder, the blade perpendicular, right arm nearly extended, the thumb and first two fingers embracing the handle; left side of handle with thumb against the thigh. This is the position of CARRY SWORDS. Present Swords..... Raise the sword vertically to a position in front of the face with the handle as high as the chin and six inches in front of the neck, the thumb on the chin side or the handle and the back or the hand on the other side, elbow close to the body, the blade inclined at an angle of 30 degrees away from the face.

Motions & Proposals To Be Brought up at the October 15, 2010 Annual Grand Convocation
Motion for Creation of a Grand Royal Arch Chapter Database Fund ‐ as of March 9, 2010
Motion #1
I moved that the Grand Chapter approve the creation of "Grand Royal Arch Chapter Database Fund." Fund monies may be expended only for the expenses relating to the creation and maintenance of a database of the membership of (a) the Grand Royal Arch Chapter of Massachusetts, (b) the Grand Council of Massachusetts and (c) the Grand Commandery of Knights Templar, Inc. and the Appendant Orders of Massachusetts and Rhode Island. (York Rite Bodies) Allowable expenditures from the fund may include, but are not limited to, payments for (1) acquisition of computer hardware and software necessary for database creation and maintenance, (2) consulting and professional services devoted to database creation and maintenance and (3) supplies for database creation and ongoing database maintenance. The Grand Treasurer of the Grand Chapter of Massachusetts shall be the custodian of all funds in the Grand Royal Arch Chapter Database Fund.
* * * * * * *
Salute..... Execute Present Swords, as above described, then promptly drop the right arm so that the point of the sword is at a point 15 inches in front of and in prolongation of the right foot. The wrist should be kept stiff with the fully extended fore‐arm and sword in a straight line using the elbow as the pivot. The back of the right hand should be down. Return Sword..... Take the position of Carry Swords, at the same time grasp the scabbard near the top with the left hand; carry the right hand to a position in front of the left shoulder at chin‐height with the blade exactly vertical toward the ceiling. Using only the right wrist lower the blade to the left until it reaches the top of the scabbard. Using the left thumb and index finger guide the point of the sword into the scabbard and return the sword without moving your head. Drop hands to the sides. When two or more officers are returning their swords at the same time it is proper for those officers to return their swords into their scabbards but leaving the hilt of the sword approximately six inches from the top of the scabbard. When all the officers have sheathed their swords to that position they should complete the sheathing in unison and with gusto. In the opening and closing ceremonies of the Chapter, each officer armed with a sword (when addressed) should draw his sword (if he has not already done so) and give the salute before respond‐ing, retain the position until the address is ended, and then resume the position of Carry Swords. Dur‐ing an exchange of ritual between two officers with swords, the junior officer will respond with a salute to the senior officer and retain the salute position: the senior officer will answer the salute with a sa‐lute but return to the position of Carry Swords. Generally speaking, the officers only salute at the start of the exchange of the ritual. REFER TO THE SECTION FOR FLOOR WORK FOR ALL CASES.
