NonProfit StatusWhat makes the Y a charitable organization?

The YMCA of the Cedar Rapids Metropolitan Area exists solely to benefit the people in our community. As a volunteer-founded, volunteer-led organization, all revenue remains in the YMCA; no profits are paid to a group of shareholders. For these reasons, our YMCA seeks charitable contribution to continually meet the needs of the people it serves. Membership dues pay for everyday operations but our YMCA conducts annual fundraising campaigns to raise money for the extra charitable programs that help our community grow strong.

Upgrading MembershipsIndividual YMCA memberships may be upgraded to Couple or Family memberships. Please contact the Welcome Center front desk at any branch for more information.

Financial Assistance PolicyBecause the YMCA is a community-based nonprofit and believes that its programs and services should be available to everyone, we offer an Income-Based Membership Pricing structure. This program includes a sliding-fee scale designed to fit the financial situation of each individual household in our community. We believe people should have access to the programs and services

at the YMCA that nurture the spirit, mind and body – regardless of personal financial circumstances.

What is Income-Based Pricing? Exactly what it suggests – it is a way to work with families and individuals to assure all can afford YMCA membership, with pricing based on gross annual income of a household.

How do I qualify/sign up?The graduated income-based rate scale is designed for gross annual household incomes up to $60,000 (or an individual earning $50,000 or less). The scale is divided into income ranges and membership categories. For details on the pricing scale and income categories, talk to YMCA staff at your local YMCA branch Welcome Center. Here are the types of memberships available:· Adult (age 23-64)· Active Older Adult (age 65 and older)· Couple Household (two adults in a household)· One-Adult Household (one adult and dependents)· Two-Adult Household (two adults and dependents)· Three-Adult Household (three adults and dependents)

Those with gross annual household income greater than $60,000 (or an individual earning $50,000 or more) are expected to pay the regular established YMCA fees. Households with gross annual incomes over $60,000 and significant extraordinary expenses may qualify for assistance and should discuss their particular situations with a YMCA Branch Executive. Just bring your most recent 1040 tax forms to the Front Desk of any branch to find out if you qualify and for how much!

Membership SuspensionsThe YMCA of the Cedar Rapids Metropolitan Area has the right to either suspend or revoke a membership if a member’s behavior or language is judged to be in conflict with the welfare of YMCA staff or patrons, or in conflict with the YMCA’s mission. The Branch Executive at each branch will render the final decision on a revoked or suspended membership.

Denying MembershipThe YMCA of the Cedar Rapids Metropolitan Area reserves the right to deny membership if a prospective member’s behavior or language is judged to be in conflict with the welfare of either YMCA staff or patrons, or in conflict with the YMCA’s mission. The Branch Executive at each branch will render the final decision.

Protecting individuals and families at the YThe YMCA conducts regular sex offender screenings on all members, participants and guests. If a sex offender

Children younger than 18 years old must have a parent or guardian sign the waiver for them. Each individual in a family who is 18 years or older must sign the waiver for themselves.

Nationwide MembershipNationwide Membership enables you to visit any participating YMCA in the United States through membership at your “home” YMCA (which is the local association - YMCA of the Cedar Rapids Metro Area - that enrolled you as a member and collects your membership dues). The YMCA offers this because we want to help our members reach health and wellness goals wherever you live, work or travel. This is an essential part of our mission to strengthen communities.

We understand that sometimes it is more convenient for members to take advantage of a Y near places they work outside of their community or when they are traveling. With Nationwide Membership, members have the flexibility to use participating Y facilities throughout the United States at no extra charge.

Actions such as physical violence will not be tolerated. YMCA staff will contact law enforcement officials if necessary to deal with issues, such as violence, theft, suspected theft, and unruly patrons.

Annual Support CampaignThe annual YMCA fundraising Support Campaign enables the association to pursue its goal of helping people develop to their fullest potential, regardless of their ability to pay. The purpose is to provide financial assistance to children, families individuals and seniors in need. The YMCA asks the community to contribute each year. These dollars help cover the cost of scholarships and allow children and families the chance to participate in and benefit from the many YMCA programs and services, including youth sports, the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program, LIVESTRONG at the Y and annual memberships. Since 1868, the YMCA has been a very important part of our

community. One of the best things the YMCA does is provide youth with positive experiences that help them grow up to live happy, productive lives. YMCA programs provide positive alternatives to the many negative temptations that face youth every day.

YMCA Areas of FocusThe YMCA Areas of Focus are the way we structure ourselves so you can better understand what we do and why we do it. All YMCA programs and services fall into one of the following categories.

For Youth Development Nurturing the potential of every child and teen

CHILD CAREWhether it’s before or after school or summer day camp, the YMCA Child Care program has plenty of activities for your child. Our program focuses on providing children with an educational, nurturing, positive, safe, and diverse atmosphere. Team sports, arts and crafts, character development, social games and youth choices are all aspects of our weekly programming. We provide transportation to and from certain schools. Financial assistance is available for those who qualify.

EDUCATION AND LEADERSHIPMany of the programs at the Y have an underlying goal of education and/or teaching leaadership skills. It may be during YMCA Camp Wapsie youth retreats or in our home school swim lessons, during youth sports games and or competitive swim team practice. We engage kids in learning lifelong skills.

SWIM, SPORTS, PLAYAt the YMCA, everybody plays and everybody is a winner! With the emphasis on participation, each child plays, learns and thrives regardless of size or ability. As a result, your child will learn good sportsmanship, teamwork, build self-esteem, safety and have a great time in any of our youth sports, swim lessons, parents’ night out or other swim, sports or play program!

YMCA CAMP WAPSIECamp Wapsie is a year-round facility, located just off the Wapsipinicon River on 172 acres of wetlands and woodlands outside of Coggon. Rental of the camp during the off summer residential camping months is available for family reunions, overnight school programs, school field trips, church groups, scouting groups or whatever your group can create. When it’s cold outside, Camp Wapsie is warm and beautiful with our heated cabins and lodge. YMCA Camp Wapsie also offers Day Camp, Resident Camp, retreats, and Leader In Training (LIT) and Counselor In Training (CIT). Come and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere and natural beauty of the oxbow lake and the multitude of waterfowl, turkey and other birds.

For Healthy Living Improving the nation’s health and well-being

FAMILY TIMEFamily Time provides recreational and social interaction opportunities for families to spend time together away from home in a fun and safe environment. The goal of Family Time is to strengthen the family unit, regardless of its composition.

VOLUNTEERISMThe YMCA is built on a volunteer base for serving our communitiy through programs, policies and services. You can make a difference as a youth sports coach, board member, donor or special event volunteer at the Cedar Rapids Metro YMCA. Ask Welcome Center, program or managerial staff for information on how you can give back to your Y. Each branch offers a branch advisory committee to help review offerings and provide feedback.

NOONTIME PICK-UP VOLLEYBALL

The Helen G. Nassif YMCA offers Noontime Pick-Up Volleyball on Wednesdays and Fridays from 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. Just show up and play!

NOONTIME PICK-UP BASKETBALL

Adult Noontime Pick-up Basketball is for YMCA members who are at least 18 years old and wish to get their exercise playing basketball. The YMCA is a member and value-driven organization. We ask that the four core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility be demonstrated by all in our facility. Those who choose not to display these values by following YMCA rules will be asked to leave.

The following rules apply to noontime pick-up basketball at the Helen G. Nassif YMCA only.

1. Noontime Pick-up Basketball is from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m., Monday through Friday. It is for YMCA Members ONLY who are at least 18 years of age. No guests are allowed in the building during this time. YMCA members caught bringing in nonmembers during this time period will have their memberships suspended for a minimum two weeks.

2. The first 10 people on the court play the first game. The next 10 will start a new game on one of the open courts. Players will not be allowed to stay at the first court and wait for that game to end. If another 10 players arrive, they must start a game on the third court and will not be allowed to wait for one of the other courts to finish.

3. The first people to arrive after the game has started play next. Players must be present immediately when the game is over. If five people or less are waiting to play, they are automatically in the next game and do not need to shoot for a spot. If there are less than

five people, the team that lost will shoot to fill the open spots.

4. If more then five people are waiting, the first five to arrive will play in the next game on the first available court. The remaining people automatically play on the next available court.

5. The offensive team will call all violations. Excessive arguing will not be tolerated. Anyone who continuously argues will be asked to leave the building and will have his or her membership suspended for a minimum two weeks. If there is a disagreement during a loose ball, one player will shoot one shot from threepoint range. If the shooter makes it, the call will go his/her way. If he/she misses, the call will go to the other team. Again, there will be no arguing.

6. In case of a jump ball, defensive team gains position.

7. Physical violence of any type will not be tolerated. Members who are physically violent will have their YMCA memberships suspended for a minimum of one month.

8. Any YMCA staff can ask you to leave if they feel you are not following the gym rules set by the YMCA.
