To help build and sustain the

Brigadier General James B. Thayer

Oregon Military Museum at Camp

Withycombe as a major regional

attraction that celebrates Oregon’s

military history from Native

American warriors and the founding

of the Oregon National Guard

through the present day.

To provide hands-on educational

programs on Oregon’s military

history for school children and the

public, without regard to size of

audience, location, or ability to

pay.

The Museum is named in honor of Brigadier

General James B. Thayer, one of Oregon’s finest

military and civic leaders. James Thayer joined

the U.S. Army in 1942, earning the prestigious

Silver and Bronze Stars for his combat service in

Europe during World War II. Second Lieutenant

Thayer’s anti-tank mine platoon discovered and

liberated a Nazi death camp, Gunskirchen Lager,

near Wels, Austria, saving the lives of more than

15,000 Hungarian Jewish prisoners.

Oregon Military Museum is poised to become a

world-class museum and leading regional attraction.

Oregon’s military history through its nationally

significant $6+ million collection of artifacts and

archives dating back to the 1860s. These 14,000+

artifacts range from rare weapons and prisoner-of

-war relics to tracked vehicles and ribbon-laden

uniforms.

Military Museum honors all service branches and

will celebrate and commemorate Oregon’s military

heritage: past, present, and future. A visit to the

future Museum will instill renewed respect for

our neighbors and co-workers who defend our

freedom.

The Owen Summers Society

The Society is an annual legacy membership

named for Oregon military advocate Brigadier

General Owen Summers. Oregon's militia found

a remarkable champion to carry its cause, when

Civil War veteran, Portland businessman, and

State legislator Owen Summers introduced

legislation that became known as the Summers

Law. Enacted on May 20, 1887, the Summers Law

not only reestablished the position of the State

Adjutant General and his headquarters, but also

authorized the state's National Guard.
