Know yourHIV statusIt is estimated thatmore than 24 millionpeople around the world are HIV posi-tive. In order to create awareness of theAIDS pandemic, World AIDS Day waslaunched in 1988.WorldAIDSDay isheldon1December
each year and is an opportunity for peo-ple to show support for people livingwith HIV and to commemorate peoplewho have died.Western Cape Minister of Social De-
velopment, Albert Fritz says the conse-quences of risky sexual behaviour andthedeathsfromtheHIV/AIDSpandemichave affected the most vulnerable seg-ments of society, specifically children. He says an indication of the vulnerabili-ty of children is the finding of Census2011 that 19 645 South African childrenarereportedtohavelostboththeirmoth-er and father, many of them have diedfrom AIDS-related illnesses. But many believe the tide is turning
in the fight against AIDS.City’s Mayoral Committee Member
for Health, councillor Benedicta VanMinnen, says HIV testing in Cape Townis at an all-timehigh, as reported byCityHealth, with nearly 200 000 tests over athree-month period earlier this year.“We need to encourage more men to
get tested, especially since unprotectedsex remains a very real concern in theSouth African context. If youdonot get tested, youdon’tknow
your status and you cannot access life-saving treatment,” says councillor VanMinnen.

The members of Teen Life YouthMinistriesweremetwith smiles andtears of joy. The community donatedclothes to thecause, giving thehome-less a rare opportunity to “shop”.TheStreetStoreconceptwascreat-
ed by Max Pazak and Kayli Levitanfrom Cape Town, where clothes areliterally hung out in the street, turn-ing it into an outside shopping area. The difference is that the patrons donot need any currency to retrieve se-lected items. The Street Store is aimed solely at
homeless people and affords them
theexperienceofbeingabletoperusethrough items of clothing and shoesbefore deciding which are to theirlikingandwhat theywillbechoosingfor themselves. So many clothes were donated for
the Helderberg event that the ± 50homeless people could not take allthe clothing with them.Teen Life’s director, Dezi Ramp-
ton, says: “It was a great success andI hope to see the Street Store grow,as it offers hope’’.Dezi plans to have more of these
pop-up stores, but is not sure as towhen the next Street Store will be.Communitymemberswanting to do-nate to the cause can contact LifeChurch at 021 855 2329.

U3A holds symposiumThe Current Affairs andMedia Forum, a club form-ing part of the Universityof the Third Age, recentlyheld a symposium at theSomerset West libraryhall. Speakers from thecommunity gave informa-tive talks on various pro-grammes.
Manager of the AnimalWelfareSociety,JuliaEvans, addressed the audienceabout the challenges of cap-turingandhousingstraycatsand dogs. The Animal Wel-fare Society takes in about3 000 stray cats and dogs peryear, they are cleaned, fedand given veterinary treat-ment where needed andhomes are found for asmanyas possible. Only two veteri-narians are employed by theSociety and they serve thewhole Helderberg region.Sadly many of these animalshave to be euthanised.TheLocalNetworkOfCare
aims to reintegrate homelesspeople back into society. Some of these people havebeen living on the street foruptoeightyearsandtherein-tegration is a long and daunt-ing process. Drugs, cheap al-cohol, and the difficulty tofind accommodation hamper
the LNOC’s abilities to helpthe homeless. The Helderberg Hospice
Foundation was representedby Patricia McNaught-Davisand she spoke about the ex-tended range of care and sup-port services for the termi-nally ill that they provide.Volunteer assistants makefrequent comforting and
counselling visits to the ter-minally ill andtheir families. These organisations all
spoke about how difficult itgets to render these servicesas they struggle financiallyand with resources. For theaudience it was humbling tolearnwhat is done, howgreatthe need is and how gratefulthe recipients are.
The University of the Third Age (U3A) held their open day on 19 Novem-ber in the Strand town hall. Peter Ford (current affairs and media)and Tony Searle (chairperson) enjoyed the event. The U3A is for retiredindividuals who like to keep busy and would like to learn more. Theyhave various clubs andprogrammes for peoplewith all sorts of interests, they also go on regular outings to the theatre and other excursions. For more information or if you would like to enrol at U3A contact TonySearle on 021 856 2233.
by die projek.
