Nie-mand is beseer nie. SiphiweMakibi staanhier in sydaklo-se kombuis. Patrick Cromwell describes himself asextremelyproudtobeaSouthAfricancit-izen and he has taken it upon himself tocreate awareness of other AwesomeSouth Africans.
The Helderberg resident has set-upwww.awesomesouthafricans.co.za to show-case themanySouthAfricans doing extraor-dinary things. The likes of adventurerRiaanManser and amputee Paul Steyn are some ofthe Awesome South Africans currently fea-turedon the site, whichhestarted inSeptem-ber last year. His decision to highlight the awesome
workandadventuresofSouthAfricanscameafterherealisedtheydonotreceivetheneces-sary exposure for their great achievements.Addedtothis, theStrandresidenthasfaced
some difficulties over the years, but heman-aged to triumph in the end.In October 1999, Cromwell was struck by
a rock flung throughhis car’swindscreen ontheN2.Hehadtoundergoreconstructivesur-gery to rectify the extensive damage to hisface. After the surgery, he moved to Holland,
where he worked as a forklift driver at a dogfood company. But one day, he decided to do more with
his life.Heenrolled inan internet courseat anight
schooland foundhimselfwanting tobroadenhis knowledge on the topic. Cromwell thendecided to enrol in a beginner web designcourse.“Before then, I had no idea what a right
click was, but when I got into it, I just gelledwith what I was learning,” he says.Cromwell was eventually employed in the
customer care department of an Americancompany in Holland.
But after living and working abroad fortwo and a half years, he returned home fora holiday.“When I went back to Holland, I immedi-
ately felt homesick. So I went straight to myboss to quit,” Cromwell tells Helderberg Ga-zette.Hemovedbackhomeanddidsomeoddjobs
beforehestartedhisownwebdesigningcom-pany, WebDzign, in 2005.Cromwell is a huge fan of the outdoors and
keeps up-to-date on SouthAfricans doing ex-ceptional things in the outdoors. “Most ofthem go on these adventures to raise funds
andawareness forotherpeople, not for them-selves.”He is passionate about his brainchild. “I
spend more time maintaining the site thanI should,” Cromwell admits. The project will be on show at the annual
CapeGetawayShowatLourensfordWineEs-tate from Friday 13 to Sunday 15 March. In the future, we wants to better manage
the public relations side of his website andwould like to dedicate all his resources andtime on it.“I get no compensation for it; I purely do
it for the love of Awesome South Africans.”
Patrick Cromwell has a love for all things South African and anything to do with the outdoors. Hecombined the two loves and created an even bigger love, www.awesomesouthafticans.co.za, wherehe highlights South Africans braving the outdoors for a cause.

“The things we cannot chan-ge, we have to accept,”
Ntobeko Tonisi from Asanda Vil-lage says the 2015 budget is notfavourable for poor citizens. Hesays he agrees with the hike in sintax, as smoking contributes to ill-ness and government funding hasto pay for treatment. “People driv-ing under the influence of alcoholcause accidents and the govern-ment has to fund the Road Acci-dent Fund as well. Electricity is anecessity which we cannot be with-out. Government needs to find analternative, like solar power.”
