News from the Principal….

Education Week 2012 has been an extremely busy time at Rushworth P-12 College with students showcasing their learning, their skills and talents throughout the week. The week began with artists Georgina and Stephen from Courthouse Arts in Geelong joining our staff team for the week as part of our “This Highway Home” project. This project is an exciting digital media art project that will explore the concepts of distance, life in a small town and aspirations of students and community members. Artists from Courthouse Arts have worked with students this week to produce an exciting digital presentation that will be screened as part of the Grandparents Day program. Courthouse Arts return to the College again throughout Term 3 for the next stage of this project. Tuesday saw our College community assemble for a whole school celebration of College life. The assembly gave students an opportunity to showcase their work and their talents, as well as receive recognition for their involvement and successes throughout Rushworth P-12 happenings. Congratulations to Prep/1, Year 2/3/4, Hayden Cullie, Matthew Lange-Richards, Ryan Millar, Blake Rosenberg, Hunter Glover, Isaac Trease & Kaylee Andrews who all made presentations at assembly. Assembly was followed by an opportunity for visitors and parents to visit classrooms and join in some showcase programs such as Year 7 oral presentations and the Prep/1 performance for the local Rushworth kindergarten. Tuesday evening saw 44 interested parents and students join us for the 2013 Year 7 Information Night. Our student ambassadors did a wonderful job of presenting our College and their experiences here to our visitors. Year 7, 2013 is already shaping up as a wonderful year and we encourage you to spread the word that interest is high and enrolments are already coming in. The evening also gave us the opportunity to announce our Year 7 scholarships. These are available to the highest academic achieving student in Year 6 from each of our feeder primary schools, including our own Year 6 students. This is recognition well worth aspiring to and we hope encourages all our students to strive for their best. Congratulations to all our students and staff on a fantastic Education Week and for showcasing our College as the vibrant learning centre that it is. If you didn’t get the chance to drop in during Education Week, don’t forget that Every Day is Open Day at Rushworth P-12 College.

Regards, Brad Moyle Principal

From the AP’S Desk. Welcome to the half way mark of term 2. We look forward to the school cross country, year 10 work experience and the distribution of school reports as some of our up and coming events. Uniform The school has a plenty of winter school uniforms for purchase if you are unable to get to Mister Embroidery in Kyabram. Over the past few weeks, students’ uniforms have become a little lax, particularly shoes. The school’s uniform policy is clearly outlined in the student’s planners. If you have any queries please do not hesitate to contact the school. Breakfast Club Is successfully operating this term on Monday, Tuesday and Thursdays. VCAL students and staff are there to support our students getting their breakfast - toast, cereal and juice from 8.20 to 8.50am each morning and assisting them to clean up. We urge our students who have not eaten breakfast to come as it not only ensures everyone has the opportunity to receive a nutritious breakfast and to learn vital social and nutritional skills, but that the possible stigmas associated with participation are reduced. Active After School Program The Australian Government's Active After-school Communities (AASC) program is a national initiative that provides primary school children with access to free sport and other structured physical activity programs in the after-school time slot of 3.30pm to 5.00pm. The program aims to engage traditionally inactive children in sport and other structured physical activities and through a positive and fun experience, develop a love of sport that inspires them to join a local sporting club. Rushworth P12 College encourages all Primary School Children active or inactive to attend. The overall objectives of the program are to:

Enhance the physical activity levels of Australian primary school children through a nationally coordinated program.

Provide increased opportunities for inclusive participation in quality, safe and fun sport and other structured physical activities.

Stimulate local community involvement in sport and other structured physical activity

At Rushworth P12 College we are running Active After School on Monday and Tuesday night as of the 28th of May 2012. For the next 4 weeks the students will undertake karate. We welcome any new students and permission forms must be filled in before each child commences. These forms are available from the College Office.

Worthy of Praise Courtney Davidson for being a fantastic peer mediator with younger students.

Daniel West, Shanae Baldwin, Janelle Doolan, Elli Jones, Isaac Trease, Michael Biddiscombe, Sarah Martin, Emily Digney, Danny Doolan, Jake Thompson & Georgia Horsley for being wonderful College ambassadors at the Year 7 Information Evening.

Matthew Caton for lovely manners, always saying please and thank you.

Nick Lineham and Chantelle Bassett for working well in Year 10 English.

Jack Abnett and Jack Horsley for an outstanding text response on The Hobbit!

Breese Jenkins and Kaylee Andrews for participation in the Plain Speaking English Competition.

In English this term Jack Horsley and I were required to complete a Text Response on one of our favourite books, The Hobbit by J.R.R Tolkien. We had to make a map showing the journey of Bilbo Baggins and create a piece of writing using the system of Runes used in the Hobbit. We studied four of the characters in the book in detail and wrote a summary of the chapters in detail. We then wrote an essay about how Bilbo had changed from the start to the end of the journey. For Education Week we wrote a poem about The Hobbit and performed it.

Jack Abnett

Welcome Mr David Tyler our new Assistant Principal

I would like to begin by thanking Brad and his selection panel, Sharon and Suzanne for appointing me to Rushworth P12 College. I feel privileged by the trust they have instilled in me and the opportunities

extended to me in my new position as Assistant Principal. In essence this amounts to being invited to make a special contribution – a real chance to make a real difference. I have been impressed by the warm welcome I have received from the staff, students and community members already and I am delighted to

be ‘stepping up to the plate’ as Assistant Principal at Rushworth P-12 College.

My teaching career has been enriched by a broad range of learning opportunities from Primary, Secondary, TAFE and university teaching. I have come to appreciate that each place of learning is unique. Each has its own character. Each has its particular needs and priorities. Yet there is one common thread. I believe that each learner is entitled to the best education that can be provided. In practice this means supporting students to feel secure and valued. It means rigorous assessment for learning so that each learner is equipped with a course that will support and extend their learning. Above all it means acknowledging each child’s personal best. Effective schools have a culture of high expectations. Every child has the right to expect quality teaching just as every teacher has the right to expect effective student engagement, well-being and discipline structures.

In eight years as Campus Manager at Lake Bolac College (P12). I quickly came to value the many special features inherent in small rural P-12 schools. Rural students are real. Country schools allow teachers and students to develop real relationships. Above all they provide a unique opportunity and responsibility to cater to the needs of the whole child.

I like to get out and about in the community. There is more wisdom and truth in the daily lives of our community members than in any textbook. Sometimes mums and dads try to tell me that they are just ordinary people. To me there is no such thing as an ‘ordinary person’. Each one of us is extraordinary and is entitled to be treated with dignity and respect. Each one of us is entitled to expect the best of each other.

I look forward to living and working in the Rushworth Community and welcome your visit to my office any time.

Plain Speaking English Competition- Shepparton: May 15th Congratulations to Breese Jenkins and Kaylee Andrews who presented six minute prepared speeches on the topics of 'The dangers of palm oil' and 'The banning of shark nets'. In addition to their prepared speeches students were required to answer two three minute impromptu questions with only four minutes preparation time. This is quite a daunting task. Although neither were declared the winners both girls represented the college with distinction and were great ambassadors for Rushworth. Legacy Junior Public Speaking Award- Shepparton Blake Rosenberg and Jack Horsley have been selected to represent us in this annual competition. The boys will be required to prepare a five minute speech on' The meaning of Legacy'. Blake demonstrated to us at assembly this week that he has an excellent speech already written and will be well rehearsed when it comes to his performance in July. With public speaking experience at the Easter Festival and Anzac Day Ceremony under his belt I'm sure Jack's performance will be equally impressive.

Deanne Nobbs, Public Speaking Leader

Cross Country Running

A big thank you to Gemma and Chloe Fisher for assisting with Cross Country training at lunch times. We will be sending a group of students to the Shepparton District event on the first of June. It has been great to see Mikaela Marshall, Emily Crout, Tommy Coyle, Jack Horsley and Peggy Sue Fennell on their training efforts. Keep up the good work!

Rushworth P-12 College were recently donated a bag of Netballs and AFL footballs by the Rushworth and District Community Bank. We would like to express a huge thank you to all the staff at the bank for their generosity! This equipment will be greatly appreciated by the students who will be able to use them in PE classes, sports sessions and at lunchtimes.

GMDSSV Senior Winter Sports Day 21/05/2012

Rushworth P-12 College Netball Team

All students showed team spirit, effort, and respect for each other. They were all keen to try different positions and showed great skills in working as a team. Most of the students also tried their hand at umpiring a game. By the end of the day I could see their keenness grow as they adapted to each other’s game, some not having played with each other before. Overall we won two out of five games. Well done girls!

Senior Netball Team Members: Sandy Fisher, Breese Jenkins,

Chloe Fisher, Crystal Pateman, Jacinta Turgoose, Janelle

Schade, Laura Martin & Amber Lunney.
