The brothers came close to breaking their drought on the odd occasion but invariably found themselves back at the club shouting other sailors a celebratory rum and coke.

That’s until last Saturday.

The siblings, sailing aboard Botany Access, combined with sheethand Chris Williams to record a tight win in the third heat of the Manly club championship.

“We are extremely happy to win a heat of the club championship against such a competitive fleet,” skipper Chris Thomas said.

“It’s been a long wait and is a major achievement for us.

“We are ecstatic about our performance so far this season. We’re exceeding our expectations.

“It’s great to be up at the pointy end of the fleet with sailors we have huge respect for.”

The long wait for success wasn’t guaranteed until the final second of the race.

Botany Access started well enough, leading the fleet around the first mark before Fire Stopping (Joe Turner) grabbed pole position in a testing 15-18 knot sou’ easter .

It then became a race in four as Brydens (Dave O’Connor) and Sutech (Daniel Turner) entered the fight.

Disaster struck leader Fire Stopping when they broke their bow pole, allowing Thomas to regain the lead.

But the sailings gods weren’t going to hand it to Botany Access that easily.

A halyard / cleat malfunction around the last mark destroyed a new spinnaker but the crew was able to pull most of the ripped sail down and keep their composure to win the race by half a pole length from Sutech and Brydens.

Thomas said: “It was a very close win and one we’re more than happy to take.”

The win has convinced Botany Access to enter next month’s Australian 16ft Championships on Hervey Bay.

“We are very happy with the boat and set up, which all can be attributed to the hard work that Rob Atkins, Clint Bowen and others who spent countless hours in preparation to get the new boats on the water,” Thomas said.

“We are very grateful for their help. It’s been a steep learning curve so far with a new team, new boat and new sponsor, Botany Access. We really couldn’t be happier and think anything is possible now.”

For 16 years, Chris and Ryan Thomas watched as boat after boat claimed victory in Manlys 16ft Skiff Clubs championship series.
