JEREMIAH 31:7-9 | MARK 10:46-52

Nearly every Sunday, the First Reading from the Hebrew Scriptures is related and paired in some way to that of the Gospel Reading. This weekend, our passages from Jeremiah and Mark are no exception:

Thus says the LORD: Shout with joy for Jacob, exult at the head of the nations; proclaim your praise and say: The LORD has delivered his people, the remnant of Israel. Behold, I will bring them back from the land of the north; I will gather them from the ends of the world, with the blind and the lame in their midst, the mothers and those with child; they shall return as an immense throng. They departed in tears, but I will console them and guide them; I will lead them to brooks of water, on a level road, so that none shall stumble. For I am a father to Israel, Ephraim is my first-born.

Jer 31:7-9

As Jesus was leaving Jericho with his disciples and a sizable crowd, Bartimaeus, a blind man, the son of Timaeus, sat by the roadside begging. On hearing that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out and say, “Jesus, son of David, have pity on me.” And many rebuked him, telling him to be silent. But he kept calling out all the more, “Son of David, have pity on me.” Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.” So they called the blind man, saying to him, “Take courage; get up, Jesus is calling you.” He threw aside his cloak, sprang up, and came to Jesus. Jesus said to him in reply, “What do you want me to do for you?” The blind man replied to him, “Master, I want to see.” Jesus told him, “Go your way; your faith has saved you.” Immediately he received his sight and followed him on the way.

WEEKLY READINGS It is difficult to believe, but in only four weeks, Advent will begin the new Church year, a short liturgical season preparing us for the festivities of Christmas. Much like these fall days, our readings will begin to take on a more serious and “darker” tone, signifying “the end.” This “end,” however, signifies a new beginning. All that we hear the prophets predict, ultimately culminates in the Person of Jesus Christ In Carl Bloch’s representation of this weekend’s Gospel (bulletin cover), the blind Bartimaeus, who has been begging by the highway, falls to his knees and reaches out as Christ approaches. Emphasizing his blind condition, Bloch shows Bartimaeus begging in the shadow of the city walls; soon, he will stand and walk into the light. His tattered raiment and the beggar’s plate by his side (unfortunately cropped) attest to his dependence on the charity of others as they pass by. As Jesus approaches, he reaches out to touch the eyes of the blind man. The man on the left with a red turban looks on skeptically, and one of the disciples restrains the two young children so that this miracle may take place without interruption or commotion. The healing of the blind has become a metaphor for Christ’s mission to heal the spiritual blindness of mankind, while at the same time bridging the connection between predicted truths of both Scripture testaments.
