Thank you for your interest in the position of Head of Membership

Development at the English-Speaking Union. This is an important position

within the organisation and provides fundamental support to the future of the

ESU as both a charity and a membership organisation.

We are faced with challenging times regarding fundraising and other

development activities. Our position is strong – with over 10,000 members and

alumni in England and Wales supporting our work, we are looking to develop

various areas of our membership activities further to engage this vital resource

in our charitable work.

To achieve our vision, it is vital that we continue to develop the profle of our

membership both domestically and internationally, as well as ensuring that our

current programme of speech and debate, educational and cultural activities

continue to lead in their respective fields.

The appointed candidate will be integral to the ongoing success of our thriving

branch network. Working with the Business Development Director, they will

help shape the future of the ESU through its membership.

Job Description

Job Title: Head of Membership Development

Reporting To: Business Development Director

Overview

• To develop and enhance the Membership profile in line with the ESU’s aims and objectives.

• To advise and guide the Director-General on the development of the England and Wales branch network and International ESUs, working closely with the Director-General, the Chairman of the National Council for England and Wales, the Chairman of the International Council, branch chairmen and international chairmen in all locations.

• To advise and support England and Wales branch chairmen and international chairmen in the effective delivery of activities, the growth of their membership and sustainability of their programmes.

• To assist the Director-General with all international matters in his role as Secretary General of the International Council.

• To consult with and advise other departments on England and Wales branch and International ESU matters relating to membership development programmes.

• To support International ESUs in regularly reviewing and monitoring their effectiveness.

• To manage the UK Regional Officers, ensuring contractual obligations are adhered to and an agreed programme of activities is undertaken.

• With the Business Development Director, to set up and implement an England and Wales and international strategy for Membership development that has been agreed with the Director-General, following consultation with international chairmen.

Responsibilities

• To work with the Business Development Director to develop and implement an England and Wales branch and International ESU strategy for Membership development to include:

Reviewing and monitoring the Membership to identify current England and Wales branches and International ESUs which need renewed support and regeneration.

Rationalising and, where appropriate, streamlining the current network.

Strategic expansion of England and Wales branches and International ESUs; identifying and targeting future key locations and developing a process and plan of engagement, in alignment with the aims and objectives of the ESU.

Assisting the Director-General in all areas of governance with the International Council and with the ESU England and Wales branch and International ESU network.

Promotion of current ESU programmes to England and Wales branches and International ESUs, and the development and implementation of new programmes outside of the current ESU network, where appropriate.

Where appropriate, aligning elements of the ESU international strategy with key partner organisations.

• Working closely with the relevant bodies to plan, facilitate and manage key UK and international events, conferences and launches, including the England and Wales Branches Conference, the International Council, the World Members Council, new ‘launch’ programmes and the event department.

• To support and advise England and Wales branches and International ESUs in developing their separate and joint activities.

• Fulfil the role of Executive Secretary to the ESU International Council.

• To build and develop relationships and partnerships with UK and international organisations such as the FCO, the British Council and the London diplomatic community.

• To work with the Head of Speech and Debate to deliver the International Public Speaking Competition and with the Education department to deliver the International Relations Conference.

• To manage and organise international delegations.

• To work with all programme departments of the ESU to increase the reach of current ESU programmes in the UK and internationally.

• To work with the Communications and PR Manager to contribute content regarding the England and Wales branches and international network; advise on England and Wales and international online & web strategy; promote the ESU’s UK and international work.

• To contribute to the preparation of the annual budget and monitor budget performance throughout the financial year and be responsible for the England and Wales and international subscriptions budget.

• To actively engage in exploration of cost-recovery, income generation, sponsorship and fundraising opportunities to enhance our charitable capabilities and impact.

• To manage and develop permanent and project-based staff as appropriate to provide Membership development activities.

• To visit England and Wales branches and International ESUs, attend events; address committees and Members about new development opportunities.

• Review the work of the Regional Officers, ensuring effective support and guidance to all branches.

• Organise and run the annual Branches’ Conference.

• Liaise, support and manage all Regional Officers.

• Fulfil the role of Secretary to the National Council for England and Wales.

SPECIFIC SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

Essential

• Graduate calibre with good interpersonal and communication skills.

• The ability to network and build effective and beneficial relationships with internal and external partners.

• Experience of working in a membership organisation.

• Ability to deal sensitively with England and Wales branches, International ESUs and ESU Members and regularly communicate with them.

• Empathy with educational and charitable objectives.

• Experience of working both within the UK and internationally and of working with UK and international partners.

• Flexibility in working hours especially during overseas trips.

• Editorial and report writing experience.

• Ability to work independently and with other members of the team.

• The post requires a varying mix of initiative to bring projects to conclusion with minimum supervision, and flexibility to engage with the team spirit of a small organisation.

• To work within budgets and tight deadlines.

Desirable

• As the ESU is an international organisation, knowledge of foreign languages will be an asset.

• Experience of working with volunteers.

Generic Qualities

• To support and promote the charitable objectives of the ESU.

• To act as an ambassador for the ESU in all dealings with external bodies.

Hours of Work Normal hours of work are thirty five hours per week. Evening and weekend work will occasionally be required. Reasonable TOIL will be given to compensate out of hours work in agreement with the Business Development Director.

Location The location of work is Dartmouth House, although there may be a need to work at other ESU locations from time to time as the job requires. Overseas travel will be required.

Salary In the region of £27,000 - £33,000, depending on experience.
