I AM THE LIVING BREAD

Higinio Vazquez Santana is a very interesting character. He lived during a sad era, yet a glorious war against liberal Catholics who produced many martyrs. He was a teacher as well as a General in the military, an aide to President Plutarco Elias Calles, an official of the Ministry of Education, professor at the Faculty of Arts, an author of highly regarded books on the history of Mexico and Mexican traditions. He was also the director of the magazine Action which was the information Masonry, melancholy priest and enemy of the Church. Suddenly, he entered the Seminary of Montezuma in the United States and was ordained priest. Pastor Nextengo in Atzcapotzalco, focused all his past experience and evangelism, and continued publishing his works, now focusing on Christ. He died in 1962 while giving lectures in Nicaragua. Much like him, there are many who abandon the wrong way of living and approach Christ. They have discovered that Jesus is the living bread which gives meaning to their life. Living without Christ causes a void in the soul, something like a spiritual hunger that cannot be satisfied. Perhaps He may be distracted for merely human values, but there He is, urging us to seek a different bread that gives life to this world. Not only those who are not Christians live without Christ; so do those who say they are Christian but live far from God’s will. These can be added to the indifferent, the accustomed, those who have their spiritual senses dulled by excessive taste for mundane. The habit of sin and love of sinning can kill the hunger for God within us. The Hedonists of ancient Greek said, "Eat and drink, tomorrow we shall die," and it continues to be said today. The exclusive pursuit of material goods makes us forget about God although we believe that we are Christians. We need actual bread to live, we need to work in order to live a decent life, but we also need the living bread that nourishes us for true life. A man or woman of integrity, are they who, besides responsibly practicing their religion, give meaning to their life, to their family, their job and their social engagements. If they do not practice their religion they are incomplete and their lives have no assurance of righteousness and good intention. Selfishness prevents them from seeking the good of others, even to those that are the closest. Let us seek, then, the bread that comes from heaven, as a gift from God our Father and let us give meaning and fulfillment to our lives.

YO SOY EL PAN VIVO Jn 6, 51-58

Pbro. Sergio G. Román Higinio Vázquez Santana es un personaje muy interesante. Le tocó vivir en esa época triste y a la vez gloriosa de la guerra de los liberales contra los católicos que produjo tantos mártires. Él era maestro, pero también militar con grado de general, colaborador del presidente Plutarco Elías Calles fue funcionario de la Secretaría de Educación Pública, catedrático en la facultad de filosofía y letras, autor de libros muy apreciados de historia de México y de las tradiciones mexicanas. Masón de hueso colo-rado, director de la revista Acción que era el órgano

informativo de la masonería, traga curas y enemigo de la Iglesia. De pronto ingresó al Semi-nario de Montezuma en Estados Unidos y se ordenó sacerdote. Párroco de Nextengo en Atz-capotzalco enfocó toda su experiencia pasada a la evangelización y siguió publicando obras, ahora con sabor a Cristo. Murió en 1962 mientras daba unas conferencias en Nicaragua. Como él hay muchos personajes mexicanos y de otros países que abandonan una forma equivocada de vivir y se acercan a Cristo. Ellos han descubierto que Jesús es el Pan Vivo que da sentido a su vida. Vivir sin Cristo causa un vacío en el alma, algo así como un hambre espiritual que no se puede satisfacer. Quizá se pueda distraer con valores meramente humanos, pero allí está, urgiéndonos buscar un pan diferente al que nos da la vida de este mundo. No sólo viven sin Cristo los que no son cristianos; también viven sin Cristo muchos que se dicen cristianos, pero que viven alejados de hacer la voluntad de Dios. A estos se pue-den añadir los indiferentes, los acostumbrados, los que tienen sus sentidos espirituales embo-tados por un excesivo gusto por lo mundano. La costumbre de pecar y el gusto por hacerlo pueden matar en nosotros el hambre de Dios. “Comamos y bebamos que mañana moriremos” decían los hedonistas de la antigüedad griega y siguen diciéndolo los de hoy. La búsqueda ex-clusiva de los bienes materiales nos hace olvidarnos de Dios, aunque creamos que somos cristianos. Necesitamos el pan material para vivir, necesitamos trabajar para poder vivir una vida digna, pero necesitamos también el Pan Vivo que nos nutre para la vida verdadera. Un hom-bre íntegro, una mujer íntegra, son aquellos que a partir de una práctica responsable de su re-ligión le dan sentido a toda su vida, a su familia, a su trabajo y a sus compromisos sociales. Si no practican su religión están incompletos y sus vidas no tienen garantía de rectitud y de bue-na intención. El egoísmo les impide buscar el bien de los demás, incluso el de los más cerca-nos. Busquemos, pues, el Pan que viene del cielo como regalo de nuestro Padre Dios y démosle

sentido y plenitud a nuestra vida

Siguiendo la recomendación Divina que nos invita a descansar y a alimentarnos y aprovechando la gentileza de Monseñor Bill Lesser que se ofreció a cubrirme con las Misas Dominicales, aprovecho para ir a México del 13 al 24 de Agosto para visitar a mis hermanos y poder descansar un poco para regresar con más energía y poder servirles mejor. Por favor, durante mis vacaciones, no se enfermen, no se mueran y no cometan pecados.

Accepting the Divine recommendation of resting and eating, and taking advantage of the generosity of Monsignor Bill Lesser who offered to Celebrate the Sunday Masses, I am going to Mexico on August 13 - 24 to visit my brothers and sister and to rest a little to come back with more energy to serve you better. Please, during my absence do not get sick, do not die and do not commit any sin.
