Pre - Season Hazard Reduction
Burning
With temperatures now warming it’s
time to complete your Bushfire
Preparations around your property.
This should include removal of
dangerous vegetation from around
your house which may become fuel in a
bushfire. We strongly request you
register your fire with TFS to eliminate
unnecessary call outs for Volunteer
Firefighters. Any fire which may
produce visible smoke needs to be
registered by calling 1800 000 699. It’s
a simple 2 minute phone call which
saves hours of work for us. Your
cooperation is greatly appreciated. This
is not a permit system, it assists us in
knowing what fires are burning at any
time and reduces wasted time for
Volunteers which most of us don’t
have to waste. Please contact your
local brigade if you require advice
regarding property preparedness,
creating defendable space, access
and defence of your property.
Road Addressing. We have seen an increase in
properties not clearly displaying
address number at your gate
entrance. This has the effect of
extending response times of
emergency services, causes
dangerous conditions on roads for
emergency vehicles and limits
service delivery. We ask you check to
confirm your house / property
number is CLEARLY visible from the
road in both directions of approach.

EDITORIAL
As the months move on towards the
summer season we have a reminder
opposite from Leon King of the Lilydale
Fire Service regarding fuel reduction and
staying safe. Even late September we
have had a total fire ban in the south of
the state. His comments regarding road
signage is also a problem for service
vehicles and other delivery vehicles trying
to find unmarked properties. Can we
all make sure our entrances can be easily
identified.
There are various items of entertainment
around the area for this month, there is
the Village Market on Sunday 12, always
lots of goodies to be had there. Check
out the Lions Clubs book stall for a good
read and their world famous sausage
sizzle.
The music of Elizabethan composer John
Dowland is a feature of an exciting
concert in Lilydale, proudly hosted by
Lilydale Arts.
Gary Files, an award-winning Australian
actor joins Nuove Musiche for this
concert. Gary has performed all over the
world and is familiar in Australia as Tom
Ramsay in Neighbours.

COLD SORES Cold sores are caused by one of the viruses from the
herpes family, known as herpes simplex virus. There are
two types of herpes simplex infections. Type 1 usually
causes infections on the face, such as cold sores around
the lips and nose, whereas type 2 usually causes genital
herpes.
The tingle is the very first sign of a cold sore. This
tingling, burning sensation occurs even before the actual
cold sore appears. It is at this time that the antiviral
creams and tablets are most effective.
The next stage is the blister. Usually within 24 hours or
so of that first feeling of a cold sore coming on, red
swollen areas appear and get covered with tiny blisters.
These blisters can last for several days. When they
burst open and begin to weep, the virus can be easily
spread to other places and people. Antiviral creams and
tablets are still effective but the iodine products are also
effective at this stage.
After the weeping stage the cold sore dries up and
forms a scab which generally heals in about a week
without scarring. Blistex and Nyal lip ointments are
good at this stage.
‘Compeed’ cold sore patches can be used instead of
creams, and provide an invisible covering which relieves
pain and enhances healing. These can be used at any
stage of the infection, but sooner is best.
Anti-viral tablets for cold sores are now available
over-the-counter without a prescription. The cost is
about $12 for 3 tablets which are all taken together as a
single dose as soon as the cold sore starts tingling. It
would be best to have this medication all ready and
waiting in your cupboard if this treatment would suit
you.
Unfortunately, cold sores come back time after time
because the virus “hides” in the body’s nerve cells away
from the immune system waiting for a ‘trigger’ to start a
new infection. Common triggers are sunlight, a cold, or
stress (e.g. an important event like a wedding or exams)
There may be no permanent cure for cold sores yet, but
you can do a lot to prevent them. Dry, burnt lips
present the ideal conditions for a cold sore to break
out.
Regular use of a sunscreen lip balm will prevent many
cold sores. Keep some antiviral cold sore cream or
tablets handy to use as soon as you feel the tingle start.
If this is used early enough, the cold sore can be pre-
vented. If you have very frequent attacks, perhaps
regularly taking Lysine tablets will prevent them.
Reducing chocolate and nuts may also help. We are all
exposed to the cold sore virus, but not all of us will
experience an outbreak of cold sores. About 1 in 5 peo-
ple report having repeated attacks.

The Club was pleased to host our new District
Governor Michael Maclaren at our September dinner
meeting where he outlined his plans for the year and
answered questions about Lions matters.
We are involved with the organisation of the
November State Convention, this year to be held at
Scottsdale on the weekend of 21-23 November where
we will be organising the remembrance ceremony and
luncheon bbq on Sunday 23. During October and
November we will also be helping at the local Open
Gardens scheme and running the Senior Citizens Bus
outing (if you are a senior, new to the district and
would you name included on our list please phone
President Barry 63954233). During December we
plan to hold a Xmas activity in Lilydale on 20
December from 5 – 9 pm including a sausage sizzle
hopefully at the Village Green – more details later.
Come long and see us at the monthly markets – stop
and have a chat about our activities – look for our
bright red shirts with the Lions logo. The latest raffle
winner of our $50 voucher from the local retailers
was Gaylene Shephard of Ringarooma –
congratulations and we hope she enjoys using the
voucher. Recent donations include the Leukaemia
Foundation and the City Mission food drive.

Australian Open Garden Scheme
Lilydale area will host two open gardens
on Saturday 1 November and Sunday 2
November as part of the Australian Open
Gardens Scheme.
The gardens are,

THE NORTH-EAST - LILYDALE 1935
The annual break-up of the Lilydale school took the form
of an open afternoon for parents and friends on the play-
ground. The elder grades gave an exhibition of drill un-
der the direction of the head master (Mr. R. R. W.
Swainston), and the infant classes gave an excellent
programme of songs and games supervised by the
assistant teacher (Miss Hazel Bassett). A picnic tea was
served to the children by the members of the Parents'
Association. Father Christmas distributed gifts. The Rev.
L. Fairy spoke briefly to the children and distributed the
prizes as follow:

"Really," answered the neighbor. "What kind is it?"
"Twelve-thirty."
Morris, an 82 year-old man went to the Doctor to get a
physical. A few days later the doctor saw Morris walking
down the street with a gorgeous young lady on his arm.
A couple of days later the doctor spoke to the man and
said, "You're really doing great, aren't you?"
Morris replied, "Just doing what you said, Doctor, 'Get a
hot mamma and be cheerful.' "
The Doctor said, "I didn't say that. I said, 'You got a
heart murmur. Be careful.' "

LILYDALE NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH REPORT We had low numbers at this meeting as some people were away on holiday.
The meeting was held all the same.
Police Report :
There were 2 crimes reported in our area during the last month.
1. Between 1 pm on 17th August and 2.30 pm on the 18th August, a home was burgled while the
owner was away. This was noticed by a friend who was checking the residence for the owner. It is unknown what
property was taken, but it appears that drawers and cupboards in each room had been rifled through. L’ton CIB is
investigating.
2. Between the 24th & the 30th August an unlocked garden shed at a property in Pipers River Road,
Turners Marsh was entered and a large amount of property was stolen - 2 x Honda generators, 1 Echo Chainsaw,
1 Hydraulic Pump (Onga) and 1 Brushcutter. L’ton CIB are investigating.
People are advised to keep all their sheds locked at all times even when they are still at home.
Cars should be locked even if they are kept in a garage. Don’t keep valuables in your cars especially when in town
shopping. It is advisable to lock your cars while shopping in Lilydale too, even if you think you will only be a couple
of minutes. Items can be stolen from your vehicles very quickly if they are not locked when you leave them.
After thinking about the suggestions for the Crossroad intersection; of having an “island” is a good
idea but we don’t think it will solve the problem. There really needs an actual “crossroad” sign on both the
Lilydale and Scottsdale sides of Golconda Road at the 2nd River and North Lilydale Road intersection. We are still
pushing for these signs. Also we need to push for School bus signs at several bus stops in our area, for the safety
of our children and adults.
The afternoon tea for Annette Waddle was very good and it was pleasing to see a good attendance of Councillors
present.
The need for power at the RSL cenotaph site for the 6 am service was discussed at this meeting.
The 100th year of Anzac Day will be celebrated next year and it will also be the 50th year celebration for the
Lilydale Fire Brigade. Discussions on how we want to celebrate these events was discussed.
The meeting closed at 8.43 pm followed by supper.
We have a guest speaker for our next meeting ( Oct. 9th)
Andrew Nilolic will attend and speak to us at this meeting. Everyone
is welcome to attend at 8 p.m.
The next meeting will be held at the Fire Station on October 9th at 8 pm. PLEASE NOTE THE CHANGE
OF STARTING TIME due to daylight saving.
THANK YOU I would like to wish Annette Waddle all the best on her retirement as an Alderman with Launceston City Council. Some few years ago I was secretary of the Lilydale Progress Association in the ward days, a wonderful system, I thought.
Annette, being elected as a North Ward representative never missed our meetings. What a wonderful “backstop:” she was for me. Annette came armed with notebook and pen, every suggestion, everything that needed seeing to was jotted down – and I knew that I didn’t have to worry about following up these items, often quite a lengthy list. A few days later I’d receive a
phone call informing me of what had been remedied, what was being seen to and possibilities for items that were a tad more difficult. Once I did have to contact one of the Town Hall departments – there I was told, “We hate the day after Lilydale Progress
meetings, Annette arrives with her list AND she keeps checking to see if is done”. Annette made things happen. Thank you, Annette. Good health, enjoy your retirement. Dorothy Story

Launceston is a beautiful city and the Aldermen always need to remember we also have under our care a great
rural/country area to look after.
I hope the eight Aldermen who are left achieve their goals and dreams.
To two Aldermen that are leaving Council - Alderman Ian Norton is a pleasure to know and Alderman Rosemary
Armitage is a very talented lady.
And finally goodbye to the late Deputy Mayor, Alderman Jeremy Ball, a gorgeous bloke.

Lilydale Lions donate $500.00 to Breakfast Club
How lucky we are at Lilydale District School to have the support of community groups for our school programs.
The SRC would like to thank the Lilydale Lions for their recent generous donation of $500.00 to our Breakfast
Club. The Lilydale Lions Club have been providing financial support for the past few years. The Breakfast Club
has continued to grow and funds raised by the SRC from events such as casual clothes days etc have not been
covering the costs involved in providing breakfast for up to 80 students every morning. This donation will help us
enormously!
We are very appreciative of the donations of jams etc. that are being brought along but we would LOVE some
sort of sponsorship for the Breakfast Club. If you think you are able to, or know of a business that would be pre-
pared to do this, could you please contact Mrs Wilson at the School.
Book Drive
The SRC is hoping to reciprocate the Lions Club’s generous gesture (that all students at the school benefit from)
by asking families to have a clean out of any unwanted books. The SRC will pass these books onto the Lions
Club to sell at the Lilydale Market. The Lilydale Market is a source of fundraising for the Lilydale Lions Club and
allows them support many worthy community programs. Please help us repay the Lilydale Lions Club’s generosi-
ty.
So clean out your bookshelves and send the books along to school
or drop them into the main office.
40 Hour Famine Report
On Friday, 22 August, the 40 Hour famine sleepover was held at school. Participants had been fasting from
3:00pm on the Thursday. The time was spent watching videos and beginning some preparations for the Leavers
Dinner later in the year. The fasting concluded on Saturday morning with a breaky of egg and bacon muffins and
milkshakes.
A big thank you to the senior students and those who raised funds but did not attend the sleepover. The
students were very well behaved. They even got a little sleep, although I think barley sugar is off the menu for a
while! Over $825.00 was raised. Thank you to everyone who donated making this a very worthwhile event.
A big thank you to Ms Walsh and Mr Webster who joined Mrs Wilson and Mr Symons earlier in the
evening. A big thank you also to Toni Pedersen who helped make invitations.
Student Representative Council
Junction Arts Festival
On Friday and Saturday, 12 and 13 September, students from 3/4A and 3/4B performed at the
Junction Arts Festival in Launceston.
They spent a week with Melbourne-based composer and theatre-maker, Anthony
Crowley, to create the show, which was titled My Other Life as a Fish. It was
a collaboration of music, song, creative writing, puppets, paper sculptures,
paintings and interactive theatre. The festival is about performing in different and unusual spaces, such as a rock
band in a backyard, or cinema under the stars. We performed in the Junc Yard,
in Civic Square. We had a lot of fun working with Anthony, and it was a great experience for everyone!

Country Women’s Association
Seven members attended our September meeting, all of us keeping warm by the open fire. It was a sunny spring
day outside with a taste of what is to come. One of our members taught us a new word, it’s not a lie but a fiblet
(a cross between a lie and a fib) – very witty this member.
A lovely afternoon tea was held for Annette Waddle (thanks Annette for all you have done for our community
over the years).
Some of our members attended the CWA State Conference where many topics were discussed and nine
resolutions were passed. One of those being that all recipients of International Drivers Licences issued in Austral-
ia are to have tutorials before they are allowed to drive on Australian roads as laws differ from country to coun-
try. Mellissa Carlton (Gold Medal Para Olympian) was our guest speaker. She gave a delightful talk on her life’s
story.
Did you know that the Australian flag had its 113th birthday on 3 September? Five people tied for the honour of
designing the Australian flag and the winning design was unveiled at the Royal Exhibition Building in Melbourne on
3 September, 1901 which has been officially proclaimed as Australian National Flag Day. A fourteen year old boy
was the winner of the design competition in 1901.
The Australian flag is the only national flag to fly over an entire continent and it is also the first flag ever chosen in
an open competition.
It is also great to see Liz Stanfield and Kim Wilson, local ladies, recognized for the volunteer work. Well done!

Karoola Volunteer Fire Brigade
We would also like to take this opportunity to remind property owners to please take the necessary steps to
prepare their properties for the up and coming fire season by clearing the fuel loads around their residences
particularly in the spouting and the voids in their roof areas as well as the build up of foliage in the corners of
their residence, under verandahs and outbuildings which are subjected to “ember attack” if a fire should occur
in our area.
Please register any “burn-offs” you propose to have with the Tasmania Fire Service on 1800 000 669, this will
prevent volunteer brigades turning out to your property unnecessary.
We would ask that all property owners in our district Turners Marsh, Hollaways Hill, Karoola, Bangor and
Lilydale please ensure that their property “RSD” is clearly visible for emergency crews to be able to identify
property numbers at night especially, at a recent “call out” it was very hard for responding crews to identify
property numbers.
With the up and coming fire season and during the fire season if you see any suspicious behaviour being carried
out please report it to the appropriate authority so we can act accordingly.
If you can give freely of your time to become a volunteer fire fighter and are prepared to undertake controlled
training please contact us as we are always wanting volunteer fire fighters in our areas.
. The Dalrymple Group of Volunteer Fire Brigades want to thank the residents of Turners Marsh, Karoo-
la, Lilydale and Underwood for their support during our recently held “Group Exercise”.
In particular Robin Wood from Laurie Wood Estate, Kent, Alyssa Mainwaring from Bilambil Organic Blue Berry
Farm and Tim Lane from Lane Electrical Services for their trophy donations to the attending volunteer brigades
(x9), Scott Arnold, Micheal Tandyand the Flynn family for their help and permission to hold various scenarios
on their properties, which help to make the day a successful day for the brigades.
The day was a good test for our volunteers to enhance their skills in areas that we do not normally encounter
in a lot of our “call-outs”.

Lilydale Arts After a well earned rest and a pleasant social get together the group is ready to continue working to bring you
some excellent examples of artistic ability. From now until Christmas we have the following events booked. We
are presenting the talents of our local artists so that you can appreciate and enjoy the amazing skills within our
community. Each month we also have a visiting musical group for us all to share, which will be followed by our
delicious home cooked country suppers.
October 10 – 19 Leanne Hodgetts art Exhibition. 10 – 4 daily
Leanne is our mentor and the lead artist who created the paintings on the Light poles through our township. Not
only is Leanne exhibiting her own paintings but many other crafts that she dabbles in will be on display as well.
Maybe this is a chance to do some early Christmas shopping.
October 11: Nuove Musiche: A concert from our friend Susan King (lute Player extraordinaire) and her friends.
Come along and hear this terrific group in the Uniting Church Lilydale on Saturday Evening at 6pm. There will be

Nuove Musiche in concert in Lilydale The music of Elizabethan composer John Dowland is a feature of
an exciting concert in Lilydale, proudly hosted by Lilydale Arts.
Queen Elizabeth I was one of Dowland's greatest fans, loving his
work for lute and his beautiful songs. Nuove Musiche, with its
fine musicians playing the lute, viola da gamba (like a cello), with
percussion, violin and the beautiful soprano voice of Helen
Thompson, will present a range of music from a bygone era.
Gary Files, an award-winning Australian actor joins Nuove
Musiche for this concert. Gary has performed all over the world
and is familiar in Australia as Tom Ramsay in Neighbours.

Browser Hijacking
Recently I’ve seen a few instances of computers and tablets whose Web browser has been “hijacked”.
Browser hijacking is the modification of a web browser's settings. The term "hijacking" is used as the changes are
performed without the user's permission. A browser hijacker may replace the existing home page, error page, or
search page with its own. These are generally used to force hits to a particular website, increasing
its advertising revenue. Some browser hijacking can be easily reversed, while other instances can be quite difficult
to reverse. Various software packages exist to prevent such modification. The homepages that are set by hijackers
are often search pages, and many of these programs are spyware programs that track personal data.
Most installers will give users the opportunity to accept or decline an offer to install a hijacker; however, the re-
quest to decline the offer is often ignored or presented in a very confusing manner. This is done for the sole rea-
son of tricking users into installing excessive bloatware and malware.

Community feedback required - traffic measures in
Lilydale Feedback is requested from those in the community that may be impacted by the following traffic issues in Lilydale:
1. Traffic island opposite the Pool There has been a suggestion that this traffic island should be removed as:
- it obstructs heavy traffic, especially when cars are parked on the roadside or in the pool carpark; - cars leaving the pool back into it;
- it is not needed as there are crossings at the Bardenhagens traffic island crossing and the school nearby; - it restricts already limited car parking. The council's traffic committee has said they are unwilling to
remove it. If this decision is to be contested, we will need to show evidence and community support for doing so. If anyone has
an opinion as to whether this traffic island should stay or go, please let the LDPA know through the contact details below. 2. Intersection of Second River, North Lilydale and
Golconda Roads There have been numerous reported issues at this intersection, as well as at least one fatality, two collisions
and some near misses in recent years. The two main issues appear to be related to insufficient signage with advance warning of the upcoming intersection
in Second River and North Lilydale Roads, and the risk of cars overtaking those turning right into North Lilydale Road. The LDPA has suggested the 80km/h speed limit be
extended to include this intersection. The Council has responded that their preferred solution is to put traffic islands in Second River and North Lilydale Road.

A reminder that the next meeting of the LDPA is 7:15pm for
7:30pm on Tuesday 7th October at the Court House, Main Road,
Lilydale.
We have a number of possible guest speakers lined up including
candidates for the upcoming Council election. Please contact the
LDPA with any suggestions for guest speakers, or with issues af-
fecting you or your family.
The AGM was successfully held in September. The following

nated to the Heritage Lilydale Collection.
Anyone is welcome to join the progress association! Please leave
your details and $2 membership fee at the Lilydale Post Office,
and/or join us at our meetings on the first Tuesday of each month.

LILYDALE LANDCARE OCTOBER. Another busy month has past and we remain as active as ever. Our Main Event being the AGM which was a painless and
efficient proceeding in which most positions remained the same but with some very welcome new people on the general
committee, the sign of a happy group I’m sure.
Thanks to Brian Baxter from our neighbouring East Tamar Landcare group, and Vice President of Landcare Tasmania for
officiating.

who were attending the National Conference in Melbourne. Emma gave a very good outline of the new federal funding
arrangements for Landcare, the “Green Army” and the 20Million Trees initiatives. Thanks for your input Emma. Love
the new ‘buzz word’ “Imminent”.
We are pleased to announce we will be starting a new partnership with Able Australia, to provide opportunities for
their clients to make a worthwhile contribution to the environment, so if you have a task that they can help with, we
need to hear from you. They are available on Thursday afternoons at this stage.
Finally a reminder to all our beekeepers to check your hives, the bees are very busy and will be making brood, so still
need lots of honey reserves. They may need extra room, so don’t hesitate to contact Laura if you need advice

LILYDALE LANDCARE September article mistakenly omitted from last issue. July and August have again been very busy for Lilydale’s Landcarers.
Several members and some prospective members attended a Property Management workshop run by NRM North as
part of their Small Farm Living program. This was very valuable in allowing owners to clarify short and long term goals
for their land and great information about funding sources and expert assistance on themes such as riparian restoration,
windbreaks, soil analysis fencing methods and much more. This whole day workshop was followed up with an evening
session to further clarify outcomes.
On the 13th July we held our Meeting at Merthyr Park and followed with a short working bee targeting Spanish Heath
and then a sausage sizzle to reward the workers, thanks to all who helped.
Some members attended National Schools Tree Day and helped with planting at the Lilydale District School and the 18
members fronted up to Merthyr Park on the Saturday to plant another 150 eucalypts to replace the dying Nitens
plantation. It is especially pleasing to see how the understory plants put in last year are growing.
On the 29th we teamed up with NRM North again to help with a Biodiversity Classroom Activity at the school, two
classes undertook the activity and then followed up the next week with a field trip to Merthry Park where we planted
yet more trees. The kids really enjoyed the experience.
Last week I was invited to speak about our very successful “Plan Bee” for a community group at Falmouth. They had
attended the Bee Field Day here and were very impressed with our initiative. It was an informative session and the more
you learn the more fascinating these amazing insects become. We will be looking to increase our hive numbers this
season, so if you would like to become involved please contact us.
A husband and wife were driving down a country lane on their way to visit some friends. They came to a muddy patch in
the road and the car became bogged. After a few minutes of trying to get the car out by themselves, they saw a young
farmer coming down the lane, driving some oxen before him.
The farmer stopped when he saw the couple in trouble and offered to pull the car out of the mud for $50. The
husband accepted and minutes later the car was free. The farmer turned to the husband and said, "You know, you're the
tenth car I've helped out of the mud today."
The husband looks around at the fields incredulously and asks the farmer, "When do you have time to plough your land?
At night?"
"No," the young farmer replied seriously, "Night is when I put the water in the hole."

Bringing Back The Memories - October 2014
We drive pass this building nearly every day, ever wondered who built it. The Lilydale Memorial Hall was a great commu-
nity achievement. The following article appeared in the “North-Eastern Advertiser” on the 23rd November 1954.
MEMORIAL HALL at LILYDALE Nearing Completion after Years of Work. The Memorial Hall at Lilydale will be a fine example of self-
help and citizenship when it is finally completed after seven years of work by residents of Lilydale. Within the next three weeks it is hoped to place the roof on the Hall, but it will be some months before the building is finally completed.It is
constructed of poured concrete and is attracting much atten-tion, the estimated cost being eleven thousand pounds.
The main hall is 60 feet by 44 feet, the stage 30 feet by 17 feet, the supper room 43 feet by 18 feet and the kitchen 18 feet by 12feet. The first effort to raise funds for the Hall was
in 1947 when a Queen Carnival raised one thousand, three hundred and sixty nine pounds, and in 1953 the amount in hand had increased to one thousand, seven hundred and sixty
six pounds. Owing to the high cost, it seemed that the erection of the
building would have to be postponed indefinitely. However, Councillor V. C. Arnold, with the assistance of Mrs Arnold, undertook the organisation of raising funds and erecting the
building, and their efforts have met with outstanding suc-cess.Mr Arnold obtained the co-operation of residents and arranged for an enormous amount of work to be carried out
by voluntary labour. Trees were cut in the bush and logs carted to sawmills where they were cut into timber, gravel was carted to the site, men
helped with the pouring of the concrete, and farmers grew peas and potatoes to aid the funds. The building was commenced late in 1953 and Mr Arnold was
successful in obtaining the help of many people, who in the past had not taken an active part in public affairs. He has been particularly successful in enlisting the help of the younger
members of the community. The Warden (Mr L. A. Proctor MLC) is Chairman of the Hall
Committee, Cr V. C. Arnold is Works Organiser and Mr R. L. Bardenhagen is Treasurer. The builder in charge of the work is Mr Harold Lawes, and his work is of a very high
standard.
Note that 1955 is the year that our local Memorial Hall was
officially opened.
