MESSAGE FROM

THE INTERNATIONAL JUSTICE:

“What Will BeYour Legacy?”

I have been requested to reprintmy remarks from the awards banquetat our recently concluded Convention. However, in the interest of brevity, this article recounts only some ofthose remarks. When I spoke, I openedwith the statement that the mandatefor me as your International Justiceis the same as it is for each of you —and that is, we must leave Phi Alpha Delta better than wefound it. Leaving it better means that we must worktogether. This is about IMPACT. This is about LEGACY.

“Legacy” means different things to different people. But the legacy I am referring to is not a bank account or apainting hanging in the library. The legacy I am talkingabout is more than a term of art in wills and trusts. It ismore than what we leave behind when we die. The legacyI’m talking about is the positive impact you have in eachstage of your life as you close one stage and move to thenext. How will you be remembered?

Let’s put this in perspective. If you are going to be a2L, you have already lived one-third of your law schoollife. It’s done. It’s over. If you are going to be a 3L, youhave lived two thirds of your law school life. And for thoseof us who have been out of law school for a while, well …you get the idea. What will be your P.A.D. legacy?

Are you stepping up to the plate or just sitting in thestands? Are you making a difference?

Will you be remembered for your accomplishments?Whatever cliché you use, it comes down to this … Will youleave P.A.D. better than you found it?

P.A.D. has left us with a legacy that is now almost 106years old. Remember that part of our initiation ceremonythat says:

“Phi Alpha Delta offers you an opportunity to translatean ideal into the practical side of your professional life …With a common purpose and united by that bond which isPhi Alpha Delta, we aid each other in finding the way tohonorable professional service within the legal profession.United by that bond, we can achieve much for ourselves,

WashingtonChapter – Off toa Strong Start

Submitted by Nathan McGrath, Vice-Justice

It started with a phone call froman enterprising 1L, Patrick Murphrey,to the Director of Chapter OperationsByron K. Rupp, and now less than ayear has gone by and the GeorgeWashington Chapter at RegentUniversity School of Law became the197th chapter of Phi Alpha Delta LawFraternity, International.

Murphrey, now Chapter Justice, was aided by several energized lawstudents who put together a plan torecruit members, build the fraternity’sorganizational structure, all whilecommunicating with theadministration and gaining theirapproval. Under Brother Rupp’swatchful eye, and the guidance ofnewly-chosen Faculty Advisor,Professor Benjamin Madison, theWashington Chapter quickly formedand was ready for its official birth justfour months after the foundingstudents gathered to embark on theirplan to charter the chapter.

On February 22, 2008, the day theU.S. recognizes George Washington’sbirthday, the George WashingtonChapter at Regent Law School was

present as PSL’s charter memberswere initiated and the charterofficers were installed.

Also present was BarryGoldwater, Jr., a fellow brotherinitiated into Sheperd Chapter atPepperdine University School ofLaw in 1981. CongressmenGoldwater, Jr. gave a heartfelt andmotivational speech during theceremony. He was very appreciativethat PSL’s chapter chose to use hisnamesake, as the chapter is namedthe Barry Goldwater, Sr. Chapter.Senator Goldwater was a long-timemember of the Fraternity and heloved the state of Arizona.Congressmen Goldwater, Jr. toldnewly initiated members howhappy he and his family are that alocal chapter will bear his father’sname.

The charter officers of theGoldwater Chapter are ReidWhite, Justice; Lauren Brown, ViceJustice; Sandra Anderson, Clerk;Mallory Powers, Treasurer; andPaul Flores, Marshal.

The WashingtonChapter also gave its first CareerAchievement Award to Professor Elserfor his crucial role in the founding ofRegent’s Law School and his manyyears of dedication to the school andthe students.

In its short history, theWashington Chapter has co-sponsoreda Virginia Bar preparationinformational session with Judge GregBaker, participated in a service projectfor underprivileged children, andhosted and conducted an exampreparation session that over 45 1Lsattended. In addition, the WashingtonChapter has put together an aggressivecalendar for the 2008-09 school yearand is excited to host the DistrictXXIV Conference in September.

Reflecting on the past yearMurphrey noted that “it’shumbling to see an ideacome into being and to seethe formation of such alarge organization withsuch a motivatedmembership.”

The brothers andsisters of the WashingtonChapter are thankful to bemembers of P.A.D. andlook forward to fulfillingboth their unique chaptermission as well as theP.A.D. mission. All of theWashington delegates and

others speak of your integrity, compassion and courage? What wasyour impact?

We have placed at our feet – readyfor the taking - a truly great tool toshape our legacy. That tool is P.A.D.and its fundamental principles. The realbeauty of these principles is that theyare not only for P.A.D. nor just foryour time during law school. They arelifetime ideals. They are the heart ofwhich legacies are made. Theseprinciples apply in all facets of our liveswhether in our Chapters, our personallives or our professional endeavors.Let’s put those principles to work.

Allow me to leave you with athought from Winston Churchill. Anold thought, yes, but one which isperhaps more applicable today thanever before. This has come to haveparticular meaning for me and Icommend it to you:

In every life, there comes a specialtime when we are figuratively tappedon the shoulder and offered a choice, achance, to do a very special thingunique to you and fitted to yourtalents. What a tragedy if that momentfinds you unprepared or unqualifiedfor the work which would be yourfinest hour.

Will you be ready? What will beyour legacy?

for our profession and for humanity. The attributes of integrity, compassionand courage, complemented byProfessional Service, are fundamentalprinciples of Phi Alpha Delta and theindispensable ingredients of thecharacter of a true lawyer.”

Think about that for a minute. INTEGRITY . Adherence to

moral principle and character; honesty, honor in one’s beliefs and actions.

COMPASSION. Deep sympathyand sorrow for another who is strickenby suffering or misfortune, accompanied by a strong desire toalleviate the pain or remove its cause.

COURAGE. The quality of mindor spirit that enables us to facedifficulty, danger and pain, withfirmness and without fear.

If you are an honorable person …ifyou care about others … if you are ableto do what is right, then you are onyour way to building your legacy.

It is through continuedinvolvement in P.A.D. that we will beable to achieve a legacy of contributingin meaningful ways to the lives ofothers. Make a pact right now to stayinvolved in P.A.D. after graduation.Start an alumni chapter, be a law schoolChapter advisor, join an existingalumni chapter. But stay involved.Continue to build your legacy.

You are writing the pages of yourlife every day. The world we live in isthe legacy of those who have gonebefore us. Every day, the choices wemake create a legacy for those who willfollow. What we do and how we do itdoes matter. Sooner or later you willcomplete one stage in your life – youwill get out of law school, really youwill – and you will move on and dosomething else. But your legacy is whatstays in place after you are gone. Afteryou graduate from law school, whatwill be said about you? Will yourChapter be a better Chapter becauseyou are a member? Will youraccomplishments in P.A.D. be part ofyour legacy? And in later stages of yourlife, how will you be remembered? Will

Iredell Chapter - AYear in Review

This past year was a wonderful onefor the Iredell Chapter at CampbellUniversity’s Norman Adrian WigginsSchool of Law; initiating a total of 36new members as a result of a fantasticFall Recruitment plan.

The 2008 spring semester startedout with a huge event, the 29th AnnualIredell Award Banquet. The IredellBanquet is an annual event honoring amember of the legal community inNorth Carolina who has madesignificant contributions to the legalprofession and to the Norman AdrianWiggins School of Law. This year’srecipient was the Honorable Willis P.Wichard, former Justice of the NorthCarolina Supreme Court and formerDean of the Norman Adrian WigginsSchool of Law. The ceremony andreception were held at the CardinalClub in Raleigh. Several State SupremeCourt Justices and Court of AppealsJudges were in attendance as well asmany other members of the legal andpolitical community. A special thanksto Caroline Weeks, 2007 IredellBanquet Chair, for all of her hardwork. The event would not have beena success without her.

Iredell’s major spring fundraiserwas the Rodeo for Ronald, whichbenefited the Ronald McDonaldHouse of Durham. This is the secondannual Rodeo event that the Iredell

Chapter has held at the C&G SportsBar. Over $500 was raised and donatedto the charity. The event consisted ofa mechanical bull riding competitionand best western costume contest.

The Chapter’s spring serviceproject was with Habitat forHumanity. Twenty-five membersworked in Raleigh, to build a housefor a local family in need. The workconsisted of putting on vinyl siding, building a back porch and putting upsoffit lining under the eaves of thehouse. It was truly a rewardingexperience for the participatingmembers and will become a bi-annualproject starting with the 2008-2009school year.

A few weeks before spring exams, some of the senior Iredell members

shared their knowledge with our first-year students and gave them theopportunity to ask questions and gainadvice in the Exam Prep Forum. Andthis summer, for the first time, theIredell Chapter held an exam prepforum for students in the performancebased admissions program held eachsummer at Campbell.

The 2007-2008 year could not havebeen successful without the help of allthe Iredell Chapter members. Especiallythe newly elected executive officers, who are praised for their hard workand dedication to the Chapterthroughout the close of the schoolyear: Marlo Ricks, Justice; CliftonOdell, Vice Justice; Elleveve Boyer,Clerk; Crystal Hairr, Treasurer andEph Wright, Marshall. Additional“thank you” to the new Chairs:Thomas Currin, II, Iredell Banquet;Meredith Specht, Service; Brian Law,Promotions; John Hindsman, Jr.,Academic; and Whitfield Gibson,Rush. The success of the Chapterweighs heavily upon these individualsand they did an amazing job.

We are looking forward to yetanother fun and productive school yearhere at Campbell Law. All are welcometo join us at our upcoming events.Contact us for more information [email protected].

By Ron Winter, International Vice-Justice

This is Ron’s final“Clerk’s Corner” column, written prior to the 2008Biennial Convention.Brother Winter was electedto Interational Vice Justice.Congratulations, Ron!

In what could amountto my final installment ofthis column as yourInternational Secretary, Ithought I would regale you

with a couple of my favorite storiesrelated to Convention. With our 57th

Biennial Convention several weeksaway as I write this, the level ofexcitement surpasses that which I feltheading into my first one 30 years agoin Cleveland, Ohio. I had no idea whatI was getting myself into in the summerof 1978, but I soon discovered that aP.A.D. convention was not to bemissed.

So uninformed was I in all thingsP.A.D. that as I walked into the

Bond Court Hotel forregistration on the

f irst day, the seemingly innocentquestion “What District are you in?”,closely followed by “Who is yourDistrict Justice?” went unanswered. Inan apparent attempt to determine if Icould a) understand English and b)utter a sound, the next question wasone that I could field: “What schooldo you go to?”

As I mumbled “Buffalo”, theresponse was quick and deafening:“You’re from Alden, in District XIV(now XIX), and Joe Tringali is yourDJ.” I had arrived.

I dressed quickly for the eveningreception and got to the designatedroom early to scout it out (READ:Find Food). I was met there by theonly other human in the room, dressedas he was in a brown suit. Heapproached me, stuck out his hand, and addressed me so: “Stan Kohn,Pinckney Chapter, International ViceJustice.” Pretending to know what thatmeant, but having in truth no clue, Iblurted out “Ron Winter, nice to meetyou.”

(It was also my unwittingintroduction to a Conventiontradition: When speaking, you precedeyour statement with your “name andchapter”. Those words would beringing in my ears for weeks afterward. But I digress.)

As we shook hands, this strangerproduced from the other a businesscard. Taking it from him I noted thesewords printed on one side:

STANLEY H. KOHN, ESQ.

ATTORNEY FOR THEPLAINTIFF

No other markings graced the faceof either side of that card. I wasimmediately granted a glimpse into theremarkable mind of the futureInternational Justice, and a belovedP.A.D. for whom the WelcomingReception from each Convention since1986 has been named. At that point Ihad truly arrived.

I met another P.A.D. alum thatyear, this one from Texas. He told usthat he was the head of the JudicialCouncil in his state and that he wouldhelp us learn about applying for theTexas Bar Exam if we were interested. Some of us expressed interest andothers gave him their contactinformation. Well, weeks passed afterthe Convention, and just as we werebeginning to lose all hope in thepromises made, it arrived.

The package contained thecomplete application along with

detailed instructions forhow to f ill out the

forms. In addition,there were oldTexas bar examsfor us to study,i n f o r m a t i o nabout fellow

Goldwater ChapterHelps the Hungry Submitted by Lauren Brown, Vice Justice

The Barry Goldwater Sr. Chapterof Phi Alpha Delta held their firstcommunity service event in April. The“Can’not Call on Me Food Drive”went off without a hitch! Phi AlphaDelta brothers and sisters teamed upwith the Hispanic Law StudentsAssociation and hosted a Food Drive, with all items being donated to St.Mary’s Food Bank. A total of 959pounds of food was collected!Students donated a certain amount ofcans per person and were able toabstain from participating in class thatday. The classes with professors thatchose not to participate still donatedto the good cause.

The Community ServiceCommittee put forth a great effortthat made this event a tremendoussuccess and set the bar high for futureevents. “I am thrilled that P.A.D’sfirst event was such a success. It wasamazing to see the students and theschool could come together anddonate so much food to such a greatorganization. I have high hopes thatnext semester we can set a new record.”said Reid White, P.A.D. Justice. Hewould like to thank everyone involvedand is excited that P.A.D., HLSA andPhoenix Law could join together togive back to the local communityespecially in this time of need.

Franklin Chapter Prepares to Rock! The Franklin Chapter of Phi Alpha Delta is looking to start 2008 strong!

The Franklin chapter will be focusing on member involvement, organization, and solid event planning.

Our year “kicks-off” with the Second Annual Rocking Network Event.San Diego’s premier live-band karaoke band, Rock Out Karaoke will hostthe entertainment background, while local practicing attorneys and lawstudents take the stage! This event is co-sponsored by the San Diego BarristersClub and is a great initial ice-breaker for law students and attorneys.

The year continues with professional training seminars. The Franklin Chapteris excited to host Vince Bartolotta’s presentation, “Closing Argument Techniquesand Tips.” Mr. Bartolotta is a highly regarded San Diego civil lawyer who hasreceived numerous awards and recognitions. Mr. Bartolotta’s most recent awardwas the 2008 San Diego County Bar Association Outstanding Attorney of theYear. Other professional training seminars include the presentation “Wine,Cheese and Judge’s Pet Peeves” where a panel of judges discuss (and forewarn)attorney blunders in a casual atmosphere. This event will also feature anetworking wine-and-cheese social hour, which will give students an opportunityto talk one on one with local judges.

This year the Franklin Chapter will also focus on community service. The chapter has had incredible success with our “Can Out Your Professor”food drive and toy drives. We plan to continue this tradition as well asstretching out with a few new ideas.

2008-09 will prove to be a great year for the Franklin Chapter. We arefocused on professionalism, and are driven by our organization, diligence, and teamwork.

Law OperationsTips & Tricks

By Jon Bassford, Director of LawOperations

First of all, I want to say that itwas a pleasure serving P.A.D. as theMSC for the past 2 school years. It wasan enjoyable experience and one that Iwill never forget!

As I move into the Director of LawOperations position, I will carry thesame passion and drive as I had for theMSC position. I have many ideas onhow to continue to strengthen ourprogramming and calendars. My goalis also to continue to work withchapters on their recruitment effortsto make sure that they have themembership body to help the executiveboards carry out our mission, visionand core values.

If you ever have any questions or

concerns, please contact me [email protected] or at 410-347-3118.

Now for a Few Tips!Recruitment:That subject of recruitment has

been a topic of discussion since 1902.The three sage words of advice that Ican give when it comes to recruitmentare the “THREE P’s” - “Persistence,”“Proactive,” and “Prepare.”

Persistence – Be recruiting year-round! Treat every event as a recruitingopportunity. For your chapter tobecome the chapter that makes up 40-60% of the school it has to become ahousehold name. Make sure that youare tabling, posting events, and makingannouncements before and after class.

Proactive – Sitting behind a tableand waiting for students to come toyou is not going to cut the mustardat the majority of schools. You haveto be proactive and go out and reachthem. Say “Hi” while students arewalking by. Personally bring

individuals to the table or approachthem about P.A.D. Don’t forget themost important line: “We would likeyou to join our P.A.D. Chapter.”

Prepare – Be prepared! Whendoing recruitment, make sure you havea game plan to back it up. Have your“30-second sell” speech down pat. Inorder to successfully educate a potentialmember about P.A.D. you need tohave the knowledge of what yourchapter is and will be doing and theFraternity as a whole.

If you apply these THREEP’s you will see a successfulrecruitment effort!

On March 26, 2008 VaughtChapter hosted its First AnnualAlumni Event which includedattorneys, judges and students in thegreater Oklahoma City area. Wemet many alumni, from the Justiceof Vaught Chapter in 1946 to someof last year’s graduates who havejust started practicing.

The event was held at LakesideFish and Grill where there wasplenty of food and camaraderie forall those in attendance. While ableto enjoy a nice meal and view abeautiful sunset, Vaught chapterwas able to bond and bring togethermany generations of former, current and future attorneys.Current law students were able toget some great advice and hear aboutpast activities in Vaught, includinglooking at a scrapbook of the “FirstWives Club” from when womenwere excluded from law school.

Carollann Gamino and EvaMcClosky worked hard to pull offthis event. They sent out personalinvitations donated by Braum’s,decorated the event room in a nicearray of purple and gold andpromoted the event throughout theschool and legal community.

These two fine gentlemen – andtheir actions – define what membershipin P.A.D. is all about. They didn’tknow me from a bag of bones when Igot to Cleveland, but I knew when Ileft that we were brethren in Phi AlphaDelta Law Fraternity, International. And I vowed that day to find a way toreturn to the convention, and I haveevery time since.

As I approach my 16th consecutiveP.A.D. convention, I do so as a mentorto those students, like I was in 1978,who are just discovering what P.A.D.membership is all about. As I makenew friends and re-acquaint with oldones, I recall what has and will bringus all together for a week in Scottsdale:to carry out the mission of Phi AlphaDelta by guiding our younger membersto learn more about our greatprofession.

To those of you fortunate enoughto be in Arizona with us, you no doubthave discovered a renewedunderstanding of what P.A.D. is about. For those of you who could not, orchose not to come, we will gather againduring the first week of August in 2010.Make plans now to be there with usbecause as I said earlier, a P.A.D.Convention is not to be missed. Iknow I’ll be there.

LSAT scores can predict the future. Generally, thehigher the LSAT score, the better the student performs inlaw school. That is one reason why law schools mightaccord the LSAT score more weight than any other aspectof the law school application—even though the exam iscompleted in three hours, compared to the four years ofterm papers and pizza-fueled all-nighters it typically takesto earn an undergraduate GPA. Because the LSAT measuresthe same cognitive skills routinely tested in the law schoolcurriculum, a high LSAT score often translates into lawschool success.*

But law school lasts only three years. In addition tosignaling the conclusion of Tuesday afternoon “Grey’sAnatomy” DVD viewing parties, entering the real word is,for many graduates, synonymous with obtaining an associateposition at a law firm. That, in turn, begs the question:Does a high LSAT score also bear on future law firmsuccess?

The answer is yes.The LSAT is designed to test reading comprehension,

logical reasoning, and analytical reasoning. Four years oflaw firm life taught me—in addition to not answering myphone at 5:30 p.m. on a Friday—that lawyers constantlyutilize those analytical and critical reading skills. Whetherholed up in a musty conference room reviewing documentsfor privileged communications or deposing an adversary’sstar witness in a federal action, the skills are surprisinglycorrelative.

The LSAT’s reading comprehension section tests one’sability to rapidly read a significant amount of text, whileremaining focused on the salient issues and dodging theproverbial red herrings. Bread and butter associate work—performing legal research and drafting memoranda—requireswading through countless cases to determine whether theysupport, undermine, or have no bearing on the specificissue in question. The ability to distinguish the materialfrom the irrelevant is an indispensable skill. For instance, the difference between a “California resident” and a“California domiciliary” can have important ramifications, though the difference might seem negligible.

CONTINUED ON PAGE 25

The logical reasoning portion ofthe LSAT examines one’s capacity toevaluate arguments and identifyassumptions and other logicalinfirmities. This skill set is especiallyvaluable for effective brief writing(which, incidentally, often accounts fora significant share of a firm’s litigationpractice). Logically sound argumentsare premised on syllogistic analysis, andsuccessful opposition papers bring tolight an adversary’s illogical conclusions.Who knew that correctly inferring acarbonic acid mixture formed the

Yucatan’s stalagmites and stalactites would lead to a winningsummary judgment motion?

Finally, the LSAT’s analytical reasoning or “logic games”section measures the test taker’s ability to manage anddraw conclusions from various relationships. Because theseskills are arguably more closely linked to “big picture”litigation strategy or transactional negotiation tactics, associates in large firms may have less opportunity to utilizethem early in their practice. That said, partners across thelaw firm spectrum consistently rely on associates and expect

During the InternationalConvention two years ago, a changewas made to the InternationalConstitution and By-Laws thatremoved the ability for Law, Pre-Lawand Alumni chapters to restrictmembership. With that change, all aperson may join by:

1. Submit their membershipapplication;

2. Submit their InternationalInitiation Fee*;

3. Be a student in good standing (asdefined by the school’s policy)at aschool where a P.A.D. Chapter isinstalled ;

4. Be Initiated by participating in theMembership Initiation Ceremony.

* If a chapter has local chapter duesthat have been duly adopted intotheir local chapter by-laws that feemust also be paid.

Phi Alpha Delta is very proud tobe a fraternity of firsts. We were thefirst law fraternity to:· Welcome members of all religions;· Welcome members of all races;· Welcome members of both

genders; and

· To create an undergraduateprogram and welcome them asmembers.

The very founding of Phi Alpha Deltacame about as a result of a ruling bythe Supreme Court of Illinois seekingto exclude individuals. And yet, wehave had instances where chapters thatwere excluding people because theywere not “P.A.D. worthy,” or “coolenough,” or possibly even because theyweren’t the right gender, color orreligion. I’m sure that you agree thatwe, as a Fraternity of inclusion neededto make a change simply to ensure thatthe very spirit of our founding was nowembodied in our Constitution and By-Laws and at the same time remove theability of individuals to discriminate inour name.

The second most asked questionis:What type of programmingshould we have?

The purpose of our Pre-LawProgram is to provide our memberswith the opportunity to use ourmaterials and chapter programming sothat they are able to make an informeddecision about what a Juris Doctordegree will enable them to do. Forthose who decide that they wish topursue that degree, our materials andprogramming should also help preparethem for the LSAT and law school, aswell as begin to think about what they

will do with their law degree once theyattain it.

We expect our chapters to holdprograms that are heavily gearedtowards academic and professionaldevelopment. Sample programs are:· LSDAS/LSAC;· the LSAT;· Writing effective personal

statements;· Getting letters of recommendation· Law school;· Traditional and non-traditional

careers in the law by brining inspeakers from the P.A.D.Network.

Please remember that a chapter canand should plan to hold many of thesame events, or at least same types ofevents, multiple times during the year. Why? Well, you’ll be bringing in newmembers over the course of the yearand they’ll be interested in learningmore about these areas.

Chapters also need to hold at leastone initiation each semester. Mostchapters typically hold two, three ormore (I’ve actually see six done in onesemester)! Each time you bring in a newmember, remember to add them tocommittee so that with the new bodyin the chapter, you’ll also haveadditional help and someone that maybecome a future chapter leader!

We’re very proud of thecommunity service efforts that ourchapters conduct as well (our chapterslast year combined to donate over onemillion dollars to their respective localand national charities!) and expect eachchapter to hold at least one communityservice event each semester as such.

Our Pre-Law Program hashundreds of great examples of uniqueand exciting programs and we love tohave you share what you’re doing witheveryone else! If your chapter isholding a program that you want tobrag about (and it’s ok to brag here!),please go to our message board on theP.A.D. Online Community and tell usabout it!

Striving to reestablish theimportance of fraternalism, service, andchapter order, we have structured anew committee system focusing on thefounding principle, “Service to theStudent, the School, the Profession, andthe Community.” In addition to havingone of the largest initiate classes we’veseen in years, our chapter alsoimplemented a Rolling Internshipprogram. This past year wealso began a “Pre-Major” competition, in which variousorganizations (i.e. Pre-Law vs. Pre-Med) socialized while playingentertaining games such as kickball. Our officers planned a fun eveningwith the CLUE event, where membershad to solve a murder case. The University of Georgia Pre-Law Chapter of Phi Alpha Delta isthriving! Ultimately, our goal ofserving as a resource to ourmembers in their scholasticendeavors provides the necessary

support for their pursuits. We bringin law school professors, students, and admissions board members toprovide our members with theirinsights. We also give our membersadditional knowledge about theLSAT and law school application

them to possess a thoroughunderstanding of the relevant parties, issues, deadlines, etc. The capacity tosimultaneously consider multiplemoving targets is therefore similarlyessential to thriving in a law firmenvironment. So remember, whenyou’re racking your brain trying tofigure out whether Colin paddled thekayak in Mexico with Rachel or thecanoe in Canada with Adam andHayley, you’re preparing yourself forthat busy (read, scattered) partner’srapid, on-the-spot questions.

What is the logical conclusion tobe drawn? Preparing for the LSATcan earn you law school admission nowand real world success later. And don’tworry; Dr. McDreamy is just as goodon Saturdays.

Phi Alpha Delta inAction at NorthernArizona University

Submitted by Katrina Igras,Secretary

The 2007-2008 school year was amost challenging, yet rewarding timefor the Phi Alpha Delta chapter ofNorthern Arizona University. Withonly three members at the beginningof the 2007 academic school year, recruitment was a crucial necessity forremaining members of the N.A.U.chapter. The magic of three worked itscharm to bring the fall semestermember total to 25. This recruitmentrush continued in the spring when 12more people joined the Phi AlphaDelta family.

With the bright minds of the newmembers and the confidant base of theoriginal crew, great things happenedthroughout the year. In the fall, a mocktrial case was studied in preparation foran inner-chapter mock trial to becarried out in the spring. Also, the fallmembers worked diligently to place aPhi Alpha Delta billboard alongInterstate 17 to spread the strong spiritof the chapter to all who passed by.

With the continuing snowfall ofJanuary, spring semester brought alongmore promising activity of the N.A.U.chapter. Mock LSATS were held onweekends to uphold the cherishedmission of preparing students for law

school. Also, an enthusiastic yetbusiness-like mock trial continued totake form, with strong plaintiff anddefendant teams working hard on theircase to help the growth andunderstanding of law in action. InApril, mock trial members traveled toa Flagstaff courthouse to be overseenby a local Flagstaff judge and studentjury that held the outcome of the casein their hands. At the conclusion of thesemester, the N.A.U. Phi Alpha Deltachapter aided in the proceedings ofLaw Day. Law Day is an opportunityfor local high school students to get ataste for their interest in pursuing law.

Of course individual achievementand emersion in the field of law shouldnot be overlooked! In spring of 2008,former Phi Alpha Delta PresidentMatt Flannery, completed an

internship at the Arizona State Capitolfor the legislature. Current President,Lauren Talkington worked through theTucson summer heat withCongresswoman Gabrielle Giffords.Devoted Phi Alpha Delta member AliGarten interned at the law office ofRichard Grimsrud. Also, VictoriaNeal, prior chapter President andcurrent chapter Vice President, worked at the Coconino CountyProsecutor’s office.

This next school year is alreadybeing planned by the chapter’s board, with some of the things on the agendaincluding: participating in a nationalmock trial competition and excitingrecruitment strategies. NorthernArizona University’s chapter future isone of productivity and greataccomplishment.

We have just reactivated the PhiAlpha Delta Pre-Law Chapter atCarthage College. The interest inlaw started to spark so our politicalscience professors, Professor BrentMcClintock and Professor MichaelPhegley, put a lot of time and effortinto helping those that wereinterested bring P.A.D. back toCarthage. This past spring weinitiated 20 members!

Our chapter is small, but wehave big plans for the new schoolyear. First, we have anorganizational fair on September2nd where we hope to boost theinterest in P.A.D. and get even moremembers to join this fall. This willbe the main focus of the first halfof our year. Furthermore, we planto help current and future membersrealize the value and benefit tobelonging. Also, we plan to do a lotof LSAT prep courses and do ourbest to help each other study to beas prepared as possible. Our chapter

E-Board members are sworn in by local Attorney Erik Guenther.

UCF Mock TrialTeams Shine

The UCF chapter of Phi AlphaDelta has had a groundbreaking yearto say the least. Our Chapterattempted to bring Mock Trial to theforefront of our fraternity and theonly reason that we have beensuccessful is because of the raw talent

and pool of dedicated P.A.D. memberswho are eager to participate. This year, our chapter had the distinguishedhonor of coaching both P.A.D.National Mock Trial Championshipand P.A.D. State Mock TrialChampionship winning teams. Wehave faced stiff competitionthroughout the year, but our teamshave pulled through and closed the case.

News fromBerkeley’s Pre-LawChapter of PhiAlpha Delta

Submitted by Katie Yablonka,Secretary

2007 – 2008 was a standout yearfor the Berkeley Pre-Law Chapter ofPhi Alpha Delta. In addition to holdingtwo of our most numerous, diverse, and successful initiations, we createdfantastic new events and improvedupon older successful ones.

Our standout event for the FallSemester was our first ever BoaltProfessor Dinner, a catered eventexclusively for P.A.D. members andBerkeley Law School professors.Executed flawlessly by our LegalCommittee, the night featured goodfood, great conversation, and a uniqueopportunity to network with notedlaw professors. In addition tofurthering our rapport with BerkeleyLaw School in general, individual

P.A.D. members met professors withwhom they would later work invarious internships and positions onBerkeley Law journals.

During the Spring Semester, ourProfessional and PhilanthropyCommittees provided excellentprogramming. Keeping the uniqueneeds of our members in mind, we hadour own Georgetown Law boundKristi Rose host a Law SchoolApplication workshop for ourmembers and pledges. Due to theintimate and comfortable setting, members were able to ask detailedquestions and get frank, educated, andcaring answers. We also used P.A.D.’srelationship with Kaplan Test Prep tohost a personal statement workshop, where the daunting task of writingabout yourself in a limited space wasbroken down into manageable, realisticsteps. Lastly, we hosted a Law SchoolAdmissions panel for the wider campuscommunity, featuring admissionsrepresentatives from Berkeley LawSchool, Santa Clara Law, UC Hastings, and UC Davis. Approximately 100students attended the event to have

their questions regarding letters ofrecommendation, financial aid, coursematerial, and admissions statisticsanswered.

Our Philanthropy events wererewarding, fun, and included events tothat served the community whilestimulating our legal interest. For thefirst time, Berkeley P.A.D.participated in the hugely successfulBerkeley Dance Marathon, an all nightdance-a-thon that raised nearly $20,000dollars for the Elizabeth GlaserPediatric AIDS foundation. Inaddition, we volunteered with the BayArea Legal Advice and Referral Clinic,an organization that provides free legaladvice to low income Bay Arearesidents. P.A.D. members got theopportunity to work directly withclients as well as shadow attorneys. Weplan on continuing to send membersto their monthly clinics next year.

Last year was an unprecedentedsuccess for the P.A.D. Pre-LawChapter at Berkeley. We look forwardto even more great events next year andto increasingly use the skills we gain tohelp the wider campus and Bay Areacommunities.

This event hasbecome an annual tradition for PhiAlpha Delta (P.A.D.) and continues tobe an excellent opportunity for theFraternity to recognize members ofboth the legislature and the judiciaryfor their commitment and dedication

to public service and the community. This year, CJR provided an informalenvironment for attendees to interactand enjoy dessert, wine and champagne.“CJR 2008 was a tremendous successand continued the tradition of thiswonderful event for P.A.D. and allwho attended,” added Greg Kirby,NCAA Justice and the chair of its CJRCommittee.
