Hazardous Risk Zones

Risk Zones or “Red Zones” are restricted areas in dangerous environments that people

should not enter under normal circumstances or without authorized permission.

Two of the most common causes of risk are dropped objects and moving machinery.

Lloyd’s Register has established capabilities in this area to reduce risk and improve safety

through regulation, inspection, design and consultancy.

This presentation aims to show how Lloyd’s Register can reduce the risk to personnel by

combining our existing safety services with advanced digital capabilities in video analytics,

sensors and machine learning.

For this presentation, we have categorized 3 types of Hazardous Risk Zones:

● Static Risk ZoneAn area designated as always hazardous.

Typically indicated with a red floor.

● Temporary Risk ZoneAn area designated as hazardous due to

a temporary activity such as maintenance.

● Moving Risk ZoneA hazardous area that moves, such as the

area below the payload of a crane.

● LR drilling is a combination of the acquired former

ModuSpec and West Engineering

● Original concept for DropSafe netting came from

ModuSpec

● First Class society to have a Drops notation (2011).

● We developed a calculator for determining required

strength of secondary retention cables for different

scenarios.

● Hazardous Risk Zones are commonly used

to reduce the risk from Dropped Objects.

● Lloyd’s Register’s DROPs service facilitates

the elimination of actual and potential

hazards caused by dropped objects.

● We have conducted over 300 customised

drops inspections since 2000, and

hundreds more are conducted during

standard rig condition surveys.

Data Science

Connected Assets is the Brain of the platform. Able to collect data from a wide

range of sources and process it in real-time to obtain valuable insights.

Video Analytics

● Video analytics can recognise certain activities or objects in

recorded or live video streams

● It can recognise if people are wearing appropriate PPE for

example and for monitoring specified zones for activity or

changes.

● Can trigger automated events such as automated alerts, alarms

or even shutting down systems.

● There are three potential use cases for this technology:

1. Is anyone entering or moving towards a specified

Hazardous Risk Zone?

2. Are objects left in a location where / when they should not

be there. For example, a toolbox left at a maintenance

location after the maintenance has completed

3. Tracking of people based on their hard hat colour to

determine if they have access to an area or if they are

alone where they should not be.

There are currently three viable technologies for tagging environments and equipment which can be incorporated

into a semi or fully automatic system for use-cases such as: tracking, risk area mapping, permit compliance,

identification and authorization.

Risk Zones MVP (Minimum Viable Product)

Because we are confident in our solution, we offer a low-cost MVP for clients to try before committing to

a full deployment. These MVP’s can be scoped to meet the interests of the client. The following example

is for video analytics on a red zone.

● Client provides a fixed camera with a video feed of a static Hazardous Risk Zone

● LR installs an on-site edge cloud server with the connected assets platform to process the video feed

● Unauthorised people entering the zone trigger an alert that is sent to the site manager via

SMS or email. Other alerts or actions are possible but may require additional effort.

DROPs Drone pilot

● LR conducts a risk assessment of the environment and Dropped Objects Survey to establish

a baseline state for the asset and create a floor and flight plan.

● LR deploys autonomous drones to monitor the environment for changes

● Detected changes are reported and appropriate people are alerted to follow up as-needed

Q&A

We had some great questions after presenting, apologies if I have missed any.

● Concerns about privacyThere are a lot of concerns in this area, especially when it comes to wearables. But we are not forcing any particular implementation. The goal is to

support safety officers and reduce the human risk as much as possible. We would work closely with them to ensure any implemented technology

does not create more risk than its solving and that it is in-line with local regulations and personnel agreements. Medical monitoring wearables can

be configured to only alert the person wearing it for example, this data does not need to be shared with the wider organization. Data can also be

anonymous, so we can indicate that there have been X safety alerts within a given team without naming names. The appropriate response may

then be further training for the entire team.

● Concerns about data security

LR is very clear in that any data collected belongs to the client. How data is handled within a project can very much be controlled by the client. We

can run our platform entirely on-asset without any internet connection. Or we can send all or a subset of data back to a head office for their

overview. The implementation is entirely up to the client to decide. For cloud we have a managed LR cloud, or we can work with the clients’ private

cloud / data centre.

● Concerns about automatic actions or responses to issues by the systemActions can include simply flagging it up on a dashboard or via a notification for someone to follow-up on, all the way through to shutting down a

system automatically. Similar to privacy, we scope and implement the solution closely with the client and their relevant stakeholders. No actions are

forced and together with their requirements and the safety assessments we can make decisions together on what the appropriate responses should

be to different alerts and activities.
