THE POWER OF ONE

Central school students have pledged to prevent bullying at their school. A special assembly held on October 6th demonstrated for the students what bullying looks like and how they can stop it. Each student was empowered by the Power of One Anti-Bullying Oath. Each individual has pledged to not bully others, to not stand by while others are bullied and to report bullying whenever and wherever they see it. Each of us has the Power of One. All staff and students will sign the pledge board to be hung in the school.

Energy Drinks …What’s All the Hype? Energy drinks often

make big promises. Some say they'll increase energy and

alertness, and some even claim to boost athletic perform-

ance or powers of concentration. But if you cut through

the hype and look past the flashy packaging, chances are

you will find a stiff dose of sugar and caffeine. Caffeine can

cause side effects like jitteriness, upset stomach, head-

aches, and sleep problems — all of which drag you down,

not power you up! Caffeine may also cause the body to

lose calcium, and that can lead to bone loss over time.

Some energy drinks pack a whopping 200 mg caffeine (or

more)! Health Canada states adults should have no more

than 400 mg per day and children aged 7-9 should have no

more than 62 mg caffeine per day. In addition to caffeine

and sugar, some brands of energy drinks have other ingre-

dients such as guarana (a source of caffeine) and taurine

(an amino acid thought to enhance caffeine's effect). Some

contain herbal supplements such as ginseng. At about $3 a

can, you can get a better (and cheaper) energy boost by

eating a whole-wheat cheese sandwich. The bottom line is,

the best energy boost comes from healthy living. Children

who eat well, drink water, and get enough physical activity

and rest will have plenty of energy — the natural way.

PLAYGROUND UPDATE

We are very pleased to report that the playground equipment damaged by the fallen tree will be replaced. The costs will be covered entirely by DSBN insurance. The installation of this equipment will depend upon the weather. We are hoping for installation by the end of November but if the weather does not cooperate, we will need to wait until spring. We thank you for your patience as we worked through the process for replacement with our school board.

CHRISTMAS

CONCERT

Please mark December 16th on your calendars. This will be the

date for our Christmas Concert.

The primary classes will be presenting for the school.

CHARITY SUPPORT

Congratulations to Laura Bajic and Yiotta Philippeos who raised $200.00 for the local Humane Society through a walkathon! Way

to go girls!!

Central Student Council has become a Hanna’s Helper by donating $100.00 to the

Child Advocacy Centre in Niagara.

Grade 8 Science Investigation

into Fast Food Burgers

by Jesse Vanderwal & Ms. Minor

The grade 8 classes have been involved in an exciting and un-usual experiment. It all began when Ms. Minor brought an arti-cle to class about a woman who had a McDonald’s Happy Meal on her coffee table for 142 days and it hadn’t changed other than to become rock solid! The article in the Toronto Star came to the attention of the Senior Vice President for communication and public affairs for McDonald’s restaurants, and he commented in a letter to the editor that “… this natural process is not unique to McDonald’s food. The reality is that similar food items, held under comparable conditions, would likely produce the same result …” This got us thinking about whether other burgers would start to mold. So we decided to set up an experiment. We got 2 burgers from different fast food restaurants – McDon-ald’s, Wendy’s, Harvey’s, Burger King and A&W. And we also had Olivia Garr’s dad make 2 organic burgers. We kept them all under the same conditions, and every day grade 8 students re-corded the mass of the burgers and whether we could see any mold. At this time, the experiment has been ongoing for 11 days and the burgers have been exposed to the same conditions. Thus far, only 2 of the 12 burgers have molded. Can you guess which ones? We were not shocked when we saw that the only burgers to mold were the organic ones. The fast food burgers haven’t started to mold at all, but they have started to dry out. Our next step was to dig deeper and find out why the fast food burgers would not mold. What we found was shocking! We think the truth behind why fast food burgers do not mold is that they are full of salt. Salt is a natural preservative that absorbs moisture out of food, preventing the burger from molding. Be-sides the burger tasting slightly saltier, people wouldn’t notice the addition of the extra salt. Of course the organic burgers did not contain any salt at all. We know from our research that too much salt in people’s diets can lead to high blood pressure, strokes, heart attacks and is a risk factor for people who are dia-betic. The recommended amount of salt you should eat in a day is 1500 milligrams; one McDonald’s small hamburger (found in a child’s Happy Meal) has 530 milligrams of salt.. We still need to research the other fast food restaurants, but we hypothe-size that they too have lots of salt in their burgers. So although McDonald’s states that the meat in their burgers is 100% pure beef with no additives or preservatives, we think they’re bend-ing the truth. All that salt is helping to preserve the meat from molding. The next time you think about eating a fast food bur-ger, consider having the salt-free organic version instead!
