STAFF CHANGES

Mrs. Grayson will return from maternity leave on December 6th. She will be our Librarian as well as teaching the AM kindergarten class.

Mrs. Nicitopolous will return from maternity leave on December 6th. She will be returning to the grade 3 classroom.

Mrs. Braukmann will be teaching the grade 6 class in the morning.

We say a sad goodbye to Mrs. Mackenzie-Hoffer and Ms. Code. We wish them continued success.

LATE ARRIVALS

Students arriving late to school is an ongoing concern of the Central staff. Late arrivals impact a great deal on academic success. Students disrupt the class when they arrive late. Morning announcements and instructions for the school day are missed by these students.

It is important that our students arrive on time and are prepared to start their day with their class. Your co-operation in helping your child arrive at school on time is greatly appreciated. A reminder that morning supervision on the playground begins at 8:30 am. Students who walk to school should not arrive before this time unless they are involved in an early activity in the school.

We also have concerns regarding children not being picked up when school is dismissed at 3:20 pm. Students who walk home should leave the school yard at dismissal time. Our staff often have meetings, workshops, and coaching responsibilities after school and are not able to supervise students after school hours. Your co-operation is appreciated.

OFFICE UPDATE

Page 2

SKATING

Students must wear a helmet, gloves or mit-tens when they go skating. For the safety of our students, we ask that anyone who is on the ice at the arena must wear skates. Please no boots and no strollers on the ice. Your co-operation is greatly appreciated.

LOST AND FOUND

Our lost and found is overflowing. Please stop by or have your child check for any items that may be miss-ing. These items will be on display in the hall by the library. Items that remain in the lost and found will be donated to charity after December 17th.

CHRISTMAS BREAK

The last day of school before Christmas break is Thursday December 23rd. Dismissal is at the regular time, 3:20 pm. School will re-open on

Monday January 10th, 2011

We hope everyone enjoys a peaceful and relaxing holiday.

COLD WEATHER DRESS

Please be sure your child is dressed ap-propriately for the winter weather. Stu-dents are expected to be outside for twenty-five minutes at each fitness break. It is important that students are dressed warmly to enjoy our Canadian winter weather.

THROW NO SNOW

Winter Playground Safety

In order to ensure the safety of all students on the play-ground, we do not permit the throwing of snow or ice. School consequences for throwing snow or ice will fol-low progressive steps ranging from detentions to suspen-sions from school. Parents will be notified by letter of the disciplinary steps.

UNICEF

Thank you to everyone in our community who supported our Halloween activities. Through the nickel game activities and our Grade 7/8 dance, we were able to raise $667.95 for UNICEF. We appreciate your support of our activities.

KARATE

The last karate class will be during 1st nutrition break on December 6th, 2010 when the students will enjoy a Christmas Chop Stick Party. Regular karate classes will resume on Monday, January 20, 2011 at 1st nutrition break.

The replacement playground equipment should be installed soon. After consultation with the DSBN grounds department, our School Council and the Central staff, it was decided to install this playground in our backyard. All of the equipment in the front yard will be moved to an area in the backyard.

This decision was made to address concerns regarding the safety of the front playground. When the new playground is completed, all students will be in the backyard before school, as well as during breaks. We are currently developing a schedule for a staggered fitness time so that students in grades 1-5 and students in grades 6-8 will be on the yard at separate times. This will allow more space for our younger children to play soccer and other running games.

When students arrive at school and are let off of the buses, all of the students will wait in the backyard for the entry bell. Students will line up in an area designated by their teachers and will enter the school from the backyard.

This project has been made possible by the financial support of the District School Board of Niagara and the Central School Council. Their support is greatly appreciated.

SCHOOL SUPPLIES

At this time of year, it is always a good idea to replenish school supplies. Students often need new pencils, erasers, pencil crayons and paper. Check your child’s school supplies and consider some practical gift ideas to go under the Christmas tree.

SPECIAL REQUEST One of the “Christmas Traditions” that has been long established is students giving gifts to their teachers or other staff members. While this is a very thoughtful gesture, and has been much appreciated by the staff we are suggesting alter-nate ways of giving gifts.

Food donations and unwrapped gifts will be collected at the school to be donated to the Grimsby Benevolent Fund (see list below)

Teachers always appreciate books for their classrooms. Consider selecting a special book to donate to the class.

PARENT COUNCIL FUNDSCRIP PROGRAM

Will you be buying a gift card for someone on your Christmas list? Please consider purchasing it through our Fundscrip program. A percentage of your purchase will go back to our school council, and will be used for school necessities and improvements, such as the new playground and landscaping.

To order online, go to www.fundscrip.com and click on “Sign up”. Our invitation code is 7VFBV2. You may pay for your purchases

online with a credit card, or set up yourself up to pay direct with an electronic funds transfer (we keep more of the profits this way).

While you are at it, why not get some cards for yourself, to use at the grocery store or gas station? There is nothing funny or weird about Fund-scrip gift cards – they are exactly the same as what you would get direct from the store.

Deadline for online orders is Thursday, December 9 at 9:30am, but don’t wait till the last minute – it takes a few minutes to register. All gift cards will be delivered to the school and can be picked up in the office between 8:00am and 4:00pm on Wednesday, December 15.

BUS CANCELLATION & SCHOOL CLOSURE PROCEDURES

RELATED TO WINTER WEATHER CONDITIONS

Once again, it is time to review winter weather issues as it pertains to school closures and bus transportation procedures.

As in the past, parents are reminded to tune in to your local radio station to hear current reports on weather and any announcements from the District School Board of Niagara. Local radio stations will be contacted regarding any cancellations or school closings.

News stations contacted are:

CKTB 610, CHTZ 97.7 FM, CHRE 105.7 FM, CKEY (River) 105.1 FM, GIANT 91.7 FM, CHSC 1220, CKOC 1150, K-LITE 102.9 FM, CHML 900, Y95.3, 107.9 FM, WAVE 94.7 and CHAM 820, CHCH TV and CHUM TV.

Please keep in mind when listening for reports that Central School is located in the Town of Grimsby and is serviced by First Student buses.

You may hear any one of the following announcements:

Due to the existing weather conditions, the District School Board of Niagara has implemented the following:

(1) In the Town of Grimsby, First Student buses will not be operating. All public and secondary schools in the Town will be closed.

(2) In the Town of Grimsby, First Student buses will not be operating. Public elementary and secondary schools in the Town will remain open.

(3) In the Town of Grimsby, First Student buses will not be operating above the escarpment. However, all public elementary and secondary schools in the Town of Grimsby will remain open.

Or you may hear the following:

*This morning First Student School buses serving the following areas will be delayed by one/two/three hours because of fog………. Stay tuned for further information.

In addition, for those who use Central School for extra curricular use you may hear:

*Due to inclement weather conditions, all night school, community use, and programs operated by permit holders are cancelled.

Keep in mind that an announcement of this kind could also pertain to the YMCA Daycare Program here at Central School.

In the event of winter weather conditions, we cannot stress enough that all parents should listen to a local radio station.

PLEASE DO NOT call the school to ask for the above information,

This ties up our lines and does not allow for emergency use.

As always, sending your child to school on a questionable weather day is at the discretion of each parent.

However, should you decide to keep your child at home when the above statements are not implemented (buses are running school is open)

YOU MUST CALL THE SCHOOL 905-945-5459

Our answering machine is available at all times to report your child’s absence and their whereabouts.
