SYSTEMStudent Engagement

Increase participation of pre-engineering students in undergraduate research and vertically-integrated projects (VIP)

Strategies:Engage students in URE project during SB and continue to engage them in following semesters. Implement VIP model.

Results:• PEEC II students have presented research over 50

times (Summer 2018)• 10 PEEC II students went to national conferences

/competitions• Over 20 (non-duplicated) students presented

nationally; over 40 more presented locally• All CCs were engaged in a URE during the academic

year

Institutionalized outcomes: • CCs and UH Mānoa are streamlining communication

to share VIP info and get students into labs

Plans to Institutionalize Support

• KapCC –– Recruit first-year students: create Engineering 101

& working with counselors to get students involved earlier through orientations. Work w/ NH services on campus.

– Project Logistics: using other grants and other organization to support URE supplies and stipends, work with current community partners such as HSGC and SOEST to keep projects funded. Streamlining project process w/faculty and having additional faculty take on URE.

• HonCC –– Will continue SLP and other aerospace projects

through Hawaiʻi Space Grant Consortium. – Use the STEM center as a gathering place for

students, faculty, and staff to work together in creating various projects as well as providing academic support through STEM faculty office hours and tutors.

Page 22: Hawaiʻi Pre-Engineering Education Collaborative Phase II ...Kapi‘olani Community College . March 5, 2019. UNIVERSITY . of. HAWAI’I. SYSTEM. ... public speaking, resume/cv, science

Plans to Institutionalize Support• LeeCC –

– Stress the importance of participating in STEM opportunities/organizations such as AISES and SACNAS

– Let students know of other funding opportunities to attend events. – Expand offerings of URE courses, emphasize transferable skills

(such as programming, communicating technical information, teamwork, etc.)

– Increase professional development for faculty in grant writing in order to increase research course capacity and provide more research experience opportunities for students.

• WinCC – Continue current projects through ARLISS, Center for Aerospace Education, HSGC traineeships.

• UHMC – Continue participation of students from different programs (ENGT, NSCI) in the CanSat competition as it encourages interdisciplinary and gives the students a sense of belonging.

• UHM – Continued participation with NHSEMP and VIP
