MASS INTENTIONS

THE PILGRIM'S CORNER (Continued from page 1)

At the age of 18, I strongly believed that God was calling me to be a missionary priest, not a diocesan and/or a Religious order priest, because that was the best and most-challenging way I could serve God; thanks a lot to my parents who were supportive of our missionary parish ran by the Mill Hill Missionaries. Answering a call to be a priest was greatly treasured. It was the best thing that any young Catholic boy could do. Even though I was raised from a simple and poor family, I considered myself a principled person, and going to the priesthood serving God and his people would be for me a powerful pull, and a challenge I could not fight back. Seminary life was an eye-opener in terms of understanding my calling to serve God and his people. Yet, real education and formation as a priest began the day I stepped off the mission field. Seminary foundation gave a lot of the basics that helped me in my ministry, but there were no textbooks along the way that discoursed how to be a good priest in a ground-breaking situation! Then, I slowly learned as time

went on that my passion for the mission finds different expressions as situations change. Our God is a God of interesting astonishments. Every July 14 when I celebrate my ordination anniversary I would pray like a child: “Lord, what will you amaze me this time?” I guess, this time will be more exciting! God’s surprises provide me each year making my calling more life-giving and valuable because it unfastens to the many opportunities, living encounters and occasions for doing good, both great and small. And when difficult times arise, I just whistle the melody of the Louis Armstrong song: “What a Wonderful World". I pause and pray, “Well, God, this one will beat the game!” Yet, I know, I wouldn’t have too many great surprises like that in a lifetime. Although, I must admit, our good Lord have given many surprises at St. Isidore; I have celebrated many parties with Fr. Ron, the staff, the parish commissions and the parishioners in grandiose times during the past 2 years! God is the God of surprises indeed! GOD BLESS YOU ALL!

Addictions written June 13, 2017(Continued from July 2, 2017)

The inability of the addict to “walk away” from their addiction is not a function or measure of their ability to love another person.I think that every person reading this article can name at least one close relative or close friend who is addicted to some foreign substance. Perhaps this person may recognize that they, themselves, have an addiction. None the less, I do not think that there is a family here in America that does not suffer from some member who suffers from one addiction or another. Our nation suffers from the violence experienced via the addict trying to attain money to support their habit, the death of family and friends because of an intoxicated driver, the loss of a loved one to an overdose, etc. However, I believe that the greatest pain, for the addict and the loved one, is the pain of helplessness and hopelessness. This pain is common to both groups. For very many people suffering under the effects of addiction, they want a way out but feel helpless in finding it. It is more than the physical and psychological demands of the addiction, it is also the cost of and unavailability of adequate medical (including psychological) interventions; it is the peer pressure of friends and suppliers (pushers); it is the loss of self-respect that contribute to and enhance the feelings of helplessness and hopelessness. Parents, grandparents, spouses, brothers and sisters, aunts and uncles, and friends can also have feelings of great frustration, of helplessness and hopelessness. They desperately want help and health for their loved one. They want to help, but don’t know how. Everything they have tried – angry threats – divorce – isolation – eviction – bribery – guilt – etc. has failed to affect any lasting intervention. They are tired of the accusation of them being an “enabler” when they have worked so hard, invested so much energy, so many prayers and tears that the person they love so deeply can be saved. Yes, there is a great sense of helplessness and hopelessness. There is the reality that not everyone who goes through a rehabilitation program successfully resists the physical and psychological draw of their “former” addiction for any long stretch of time. This enhances the depth of helplessness and hopelessness in both the addicted person and those who love this person. There is, though, hope! Many people do make the radical change from addiction to health, but they do not do it alone! There is a way out for the person, but it requires a “whole village” working together, with a common strategy, and a true desire by all – especially the addicted person – for a lasting change, freedom. The first ingredient, the primary catalyst for effective change is the determined desire of the addict for a change. Without this commitment, every other effort is futile. But, regardless of the deep commitment, there needs to be professional (medical and psychological) direction, and environmental support (family, friends and mentors). [Note: In AA, having a mentor is not an option.] But there needs to be another critical dimension: Faith. But Jesus looked at them and said, “For mortals it is impossible, but for God all things are possible.” Mt 19:26

A SUMMER OPPORTUNITY PLANNED FOR YOU Three internationally-known speakers will be in our area this August just for you in the conference, “An Era of Change or a Change of Era?” Pope Francis has challenged us: "One could say that today we are not living an era of change but a change of era.” Our three speakers (Richard Gaillardetz, Ph.D., Margaret Nutting Ralph, Pd.D. and Fr. Howard Gray, SJ, Ph.D.) – each from their own reflection and experience – will help us to explore this reality that Pope Francis has presented to us. The daytime offerings (August 7-9) will take place at St. Isidore Parish, Macomb. For the full schedule and registration information, go to www.wearethechurchconferences.com.

Two evening opportunities (free will offering) will also take place:

“Wrestling with the Faith: The Demands of Mature Discipleship in a Secular

Age”with Richard Gaillardetz, Ph.D.

at St. Isidore Parish, Macomb on Monday, August 7th (7:00 pm)

Mature Christian belief has never been more difficult than it is today. This

presentation will reflect on the need to find a middle way between facile obedience and casual regard for the

received faith of the church. “Be Not Afraid: I Am With You Always”

With Margaret Nutting Ralph, Ph.D.at St. Margaret of Scotland Parish, St. Clair Shores on Tuesday, August 8th

(7:00 pm)An unwillingness to embrace change is often caused by fear. In this session we will learn how to dispel fear by exploring the many ways in which the risen Christ

remains in our midst. For complete information, see www.wearethechurchconferences.com.Registration is required for the daytime sessions; the evening sessions are walk-in with free-will offerings.
