HARVESTFEST...continued from page 1

As usual, HarvestFest had it all ... visits with Alpacas, Kids’Games, Face Painting, Classic cars and tractors, log sawingand King of the Mountain contests, vendors offering a widevariety of wares and goodies and of course, hot dogs, ham-burgers, corn and pies! You could browse for books and cal-endars at the Historical Society’s book sale tent and visit theHouse of History and SS#2 schoolhouse.

The Jocelyn Firefighters were on hand to show and demon-strate their equipment, provide fire safety pamphlets, offersmoke detectors and show a few lucky kids the driver’s seatand consoles in the fire trucks. They also raffled off a brand-new bicycle, generously donated by Rick and Angie Green ofthe St. Joe Island Boatel, to raise money for further equip-ment maintenance and upgrades.

The Horticultural Society Flower &Vegetable Show

I’d like to congratulate the SJI Horticultural Society on host-ing such a beautiful Flower Show. My daughter Victoria, whois now eleven years old, is becoming an avid gardener. Satur-day was the third year she has entered the Island competi-tion, Adult Division, and she just loves it. It’s so exciting tocompete with the exceptional green thumbs and amazingfloral artists, who bring out their best every August, hopingfor that red ribbon.

There are many hard working members and volunteers whomake the Spring Plant Sale and August Flower Show annualevents we look forward to. However, SJI Master GardenerMaria Smith deserves special recognition for her extensiveknowledge and willingness to share it with others. She alwaystakes the time to answer Victoria ‘s questions and give herhelpful hints and suggestions. Thank you also to the“friendly red haired lady” (aka Joan Bishop), for making aspecial effort to include and encourage the young gardeners.

Victoria purchased a copy of the Ontario Judging and Ex-hibiting Standards rule book after the show. So look outladies! She’s reading up and getting ready for next year’scompetition.

Algoma EMS Praised forOutstanding Service Delivery

Algoma Emergency Medical Services (EMS), operated by the Algoma District Serv-ices Administration Board (ADSAB), recently received the results of a formal servicereview and certification process carried out by the Ministry of Health and Long TermCare in mid-December 2012. The Ministry oversees all land ambulance services inthe province.

The service was praised for doing many things well including, rather importantly, taking care of people. “Patient care was described as professional, courteous, wellmanaged, and compassionate”, said Paul Guertin, Deputy Chief of Algoma EMS.

“A team of Health Ministry inspectors visit every Paramedic service in this provinceevery three years and reviews all aspects of the operation over the course of severaldays. Paramedic services must pass each inspection before a certificate to operate anambulance service for the next three years will be issued. All in all the inspectors re-view about 250 criteria, including employee qualifications, staffing levels, training, patient care, vehicles, medical equipment and whether the service follows proper pol-icy and procedure guidelines.”

When it comes to patient care, the service received top marks. The report did identifya few issues where improvement can be made including the documentation of itsequipment preventative maintenance program as well as where a few of its vehicleswere not stocked with the required number of supplies.

On the whole the report was extremely positive.

Jack Cruickshank, the Ministry of Health’s Senior Field Manager (land ambulance)for Northern Ontario, was equally impressed with the review’s results.

“The results of this review are some of the best I’ve seen in my ten years in this office. It is clear to me that the Paramedics and management team of Algoma EMS are pro-viding a top-notch service”, Mr. Cruickshank said.

“Results like this cannot be achieved without exceptional teamwork and a dedicatedspirit to provide the best possible service to our patients and that’s exactly what wehave here”, said Henry Alamenciak, Chief of EMS.

“I’m proud of our team of professionals and the job they do on a daily basis.”

Headquartered in Elliot Lake, Algoma EMS provides emergency prehospital care tothe Algoma District covering approximately 48,000 square kilometers. It operates 20ambulances and emergency response vehicles with 70 paramedics who handle over6,000 calls for ambulance service each year.

For more information on Algoma EMS, visit their website at: www.adsab.on.ca/ems

AGood Thing Keeps Getting Better!Sally Hooke, the attendant at the Jocelyn Landfill Site and operator of the ‘JocelynMall’ is feeling pretty cheerful these days. She has a lot to smile about!

To one side of the ‘store’ proudly sits “Miss Jocelyn Mall” who won a first place in theHarvest Festival Scarecrow Contest, while at the other end is Sally’s “tote board”which keeps track of Food Bank Donations raised by ‘Jocelyn Mall’ customers.

‘Business’ continues to thrive with more goods constantly coming into the ‘store’ (andnot into the landfill) and more customers constantly arriving to give them newhomes, and paying cash which then is donated to our Food Bank.

As of August 28th, that board shows a total of $5,174.94 raised to date this year – yetanother record, clobbering last year’s record contribution by over $800! This goodthing just keeps getting better and better!

What a great turn out and day it was at Harvestfest. Theweather, the volunteers, the pie, the corn, the food andbest of all the large number of people. I would like tothank the organizers for allowing us to sell membershipsand make our draw there every year.

Speaking of the membership draw, I am sorry but due totechnical difficulties I was unable to make the draw onSaturday. Having had some concerns as to whether allthe names were in I wanted to make sure of it beforemaking the draw. All of our members are very impor-tant, some making sure to mail in their application everyyear. I refuse to make that draw every year until I amsure they are all in for the draw.

We will be making the draw at our next Museum BoardMeeting at the Hilton Beach Village office, on Septem-ber 30th at 7:30 pm. This is a public meeting and any-one is welcome to attend.

Our “Guess What I Am” artifact this year was a cornseed dryer. The settlers needed this corn to replant thenext year and took great pains in selecting the right seedand drying it for the winter. It would have been placedon the stove and they would work around it for daysuntil the seeds were just dry enough for storage andplanting the next year.

There were no correct answers, and some guesses werewell thought out before placing it on the ballot. Therewas one guess which I thought was the best, and youknow who you are. LOL! He said it was, and I hope Iget this right, “A awho de ma kackfor a widamajig”.

Having put all ofthe answers in thejar, the namepulled out was –Linda Vandette. The winner of thedoor prize wasScott Sylvester.

Back to School – and School LunchesIT’S THAT TIME AGAIN! A recent release from Johns Hop-kins University offers some tasty advice and ideas for the kids’lunch bags that will help you add variety and nutritional valueto everybody’s important midday meal.

There’s no need to sacrifice flavor or nutritional value whenputting together a school lunch. Trying these creative food op-tions hopefully will decrease food waste and increase meal sat-isfaction at lunchtime. Team up with your family to use yourcreativity and focus on the varieties of flavour, texture, andform that they love.

Mix ‘n’match lunch box: Use a bento box or a sectionedlunchbox that will allow you to mix and match a medley ofcold food ideas. Challenge your schoolers to build a combina-tion of savoury and sweet flavors using such things as raisins, carrot sticks, tofu squares, hummus, peanut butter, berries, fruit slices, and cheese sticks. Ask them to come up with asmany creative combinations as they can when using the afore-mentioned foods—or design your own mix-and-match cre-ations.

Pasta medley: Pack a helping of cold pasta (wheat or whole-grain) with peas or kidney beans for protein, and then load onlots of vegetables to boost fiber and vitamins. Toss everythingtogether with a favorite dressing.

Combat sandwich burn-out:Vary the bread choices of yoursandwiches by using rice cakes, whole grain crackers, pitas,rye-pumpernickel swirl, flatbreads, bagels, English muffins, orsandwich rounds. If you freeze the bread portions the nightbefore, they’ll be better able to preserve any sandwich meatsthe next day.

Create a green wrap: Try rolling sandwich meats inside somelarge leaves of romaine, kale, or chicory. These sandwich logscan then be dipped in low-fat ranch dressing, salsa, mustard,and/or hummus for flavor and variety.

Refurbish a leftover: Recycle dinner meals in new forms. Forinstance:

Transform a leftover salad by wrapping it up … in a wrap.

Mix cold leftover meat dishes with some chilled, cooked ricefor an original rice salad.

Spread some goat cheese or low-fat ricotta into a cold bakedpotato.

Finally—keep it safe: Perishable foods should never be left atroom temperature for more than an hour. At the end of theday, discard any leftover lunch foods that can spoil. For thesake of food safety, perishable foods must be kept at refriger-ated temperatures. You can accomplish this by freezing a cou-ple of bread slices, or bottles of water or 100-percent juice, and then packing these cold-keepers into the lunch bag.
