MARS ONE ANNOUNCED MONDAY that it has cut over300 people from its worldwide eligibility list after the secondround of candidate selection for its planned missions to Mars.

If you haven’t been following the story, Mars One is a private,not-for-profit organization dedicated to launching a series of‘manned’ missions to the red planet by 2024, using existingtechnology. Its 6 billion dollar price tag will be funded by pri-vate and corporate investments and sponsorships; not by anygovernment/taxpayer money.

Its Mission Statement states that “Mars is the stepping stoneof the human race on its voyage into the universe. As with the Apollo Moon landings, a human mis-sion to Mars will in-spire generations tobelieve that all thingsare possible, anythingcan be achieved.Human settlement ofMars is the next giantleap for humankind.Exploring the solarsystem as a united hu-manity will bring us allcloser together.”

Mars One plans for acrew of four to departin 2024, to arrive onMars in 2025, followedby other crews everytwo years thereafter.

Here’s a bit of a sticky point: its missions will be strictly one-way. Each astronaut will remain there to help establish per-manent human colonies on Mars.

It’s beginning to look like the idea of human settlements onMars could soon become more than a nice plot for a sciencefiction novel … it could become a reality. Or is it just apipedream or even worse, the biggest hoax of all time?

Is it really just a bunch of whackos and crackpots? If so, theresure are a lot of them!When eligibility opened in April 2013,Mars One received over 70,000 applications in the first twoweeks. In its first round last December, the Netherlands-based or-ganization picked 1,058 candidates from around the world toenter the second round of its selection process for Mars set-tlers. One-third of them have now been eliminated in the sec-ond round, based on their personal and health profiles,leaving 705 candidates, including 54 Canadians, moving tothe third round of the selection process.

The Mars One project is the brainchild of noted Dutch entre-preneur Bas Landorp. Its mission plan integrates componentsthat are well tested and readily available from industry leadersworldwide. The plan also assumes that the first missions willinspire future generations, thereby ensuring continued fund-ing for the colonization, without requiring the involvementof world governments. Critics of the plan don’t share the or-ganizers’ optimism.

The Mars One mission plan will begin with a series of cargomissions and unmanned preparation of a habitable settle-ment, followed by human landings. In the coming years, ademonstration mission, communication satellites, two roversand several cargo missions will be sent to Mars. These mis-sions will set up the outpost where the human crew will liveand work.

Mars One’s history is still relatively short. In 2011, the found-ing members of the team came together to develop a strategic

plan for taking humanity to Mars. That first year yielded thecompletion of a feasibility study after calling upon expertsfrom space agencies and private aerospace corporationsaround the world. In this first-stage analysis, Mars One incor-porated technical, financial, social-psychological and ethicalcomponents into its foundation plan.

After securing the first investments and commissioning thefirst conceptual design study in 2012, Mars One was ready tolaunch its Astronaut Selection Program at press conferencesin New York and Shanghai in April 2013.

The official language of the project will be English althoughMars One is accepting applications from people who speakany of the 11 most widely-used languages: English, Spanish,Portuguese, French, German, Russian, Arabic, Chinese Man-darin, Korean, Indonesian and Japanese. As applicantsprogress through the selection procedure, however, the re-quirements for their English skills will increase substantially.

Language aside, the combined skill set of each astronaut teammember must cover a very wide range of disciplines. The as-tronauts must be intelligent, creative, psychologically stableand physically healthy.

According to Mars One’s literature, “in spaceflight missions,the primary personal attributes of a successful astronaut areemotional and psychological stability, supported by personal

drive and motivation. This is the foundation upon a missionmust be built, where human lives are at risk with each flight.”

Each applicant must clearly understand that once on Mars,there are no means to return to Earth. Mars is home. Accord-ing to Mars One’s outlines, “a grounded, deep sense of pur-pose will help each astronaut maintain his or herpsychological stability and focus as they work together to-ward a shared and better future.”

“Mars One cannot stress enough the importance of an appli-cant’s capacity for self-reflection.Without this essential foun-dation, the five key characteristics listed below cannot beutilized to the fullest potential.” The five key characteristicsreferred to are resiliency, adaptability, curiosity, an ability totrust and strong creativity/resourcefulness.

The astronaut selection program is open to applicants aged18 years or older. There is no actual upper age limit. If the ap-plicant enjoys good health and he or she has all the othercharacteristics needed for the mission he or she has what ittakes to apply.

The Medical and Physical Requirements are pretty muchstandard and nowhere near what you’d otherwise expect:

• The applicant must be free from disease or dependency ondrugs, alcohol or tobacco;

• Normal range of motion and functionality in all joints;

• Visual acuity in both eyes of 100% (20/20) either uncor-rected or corrected with lenses or contact lenses;

• Free from any psychiatric disorders;

• Healthy, with an age- and gender-adequate fitness level;

• Blood pressure not exceeding 140/90 measured in a sittingposition;

• Standing height of between 157 cm. (5’2”) and 190 cm(6’3”).

Our Community Garden GetsReady to Sprout

By Jennifer Woods

THERE HAS BEEN A RISE in Community gardens acrossNorth America meeting the need for people wanting to growtheir food, eat within a 100 mile radius and learn to live offthe land again. It’s believed that community gardens work onseveral levels to help a community. They provide fresh pro-duce and plants, improve users’ health through increasedconsumption of fresh fruits and vegetables; the mental andphysical benefits people receive while gardening and all thetools needed to garden are available for people to use, helpingreduce the start-up costs. Community gardening provides asense of community and connection to the environment.

The Community Garden Committee is now accepting appli-cations for plots in the community garden. A police officer in a small town stopped a motorist whowas speeding down Main Street.

“But officer.” the man began, “I can explain,”.“Just be quiet,” snapped the officer. “I’m going to letyou cool your heels in jail until the chief gets back...”

“But officer, I just wanted to say....”“I said to keep quiet! You’re going to jail!”

A few hours later the officer looked in on his prisonerand said, “Lucky for you that the chief is at hisdaughter’s wedding. He’ll be in a good mood

when he gets back.”“Don’t count on it,” answered the fellow in the cell.

“I’m the groom.”
