Testing procedures for fire-proof and fire-protected safes

Fire-proofing and fire protection get test for in accordance with European standards. The most important standards are: EN 1047-1 (data security safes and disc inserts) and EN 15659 (light fire-proof cabinets).

Fire-proof safes according to EN 1047-1 – The “Braunschweig test”

Safes with fire-protection according to EN 1047-1 protect the contents from fire, smoke and extinguishing water for 60 or 120 minutes. The hardest of all fire tests is carried out at the Institute for Material Testing at the University of Technology in Braunschweig (MPA).

The test is split up into two parts: the fire resistance test and the fire burst and drop test. This test can last for up to 24 hours. (Please see below.)

Fire-protected safes according to EN 15659 (light fire-proof cabinets)So-called “light fire-proof cabinets” protect documents and valuables from heat for an exposure time of 30 or 60 minutes (fire protection LFS 30 P and LFS 60P).

The requirements of both of these fire grades therefore lie under S 60 P according to EN 1047-1. In this test the safes also have to undergo a fire resistance test – in this case up to 840°C. Fire burst and drop test are not subsequently carried out however. The humidity does not get taken into consideration. The inside temperature of the safe is not allowed to exceed 172°C.

Due to the permitted inside temperatures, safes with a fire protection of LFS 30 P and LFS 60 P are not suited to store discs and other electronic data carriers.

For the fire resistance test the safe is heated up to a temperature of 1090°C for 60 or 120 minutes.

In the second part, the so-called fire burst and drop test, the safe is heated up to a temperature of about 1090 °C for a duration of 30 minutes.

The safe then gets dropped a distance of 9,15 meters from the ground onto a bed of gravel or crushed stone. This equates to a drop out of a three-storey building that is on fire.

Subsequently, the safe is again heated up to a temperature of 840 °C and is then left to cool down.
