The CHRISTMAS Gift Guide edition 2010

The coldest November for seventeen years did nothing to dampen the spirits at this year’s Christmas Carnival. The bright sunshine was ideal for browsing the farmers’ market and stalls of the diverse charities and youth organisations.

Most of the High Street shops were open and trade was brisk, helped by the

champagne and mince pies on offer.

Harpendia visited The Daisy Chain, Sweetique and Total Looks and then took refuge from the cold with a glass of fizz at the Oui fashion shop. There were warm welcomes at Allfloors, town garden and ethos hair and beauty where staff were decorating their Christmas Tree. (continued on page 2)

In the Lower High Street, Threads was packed and at The Lemongrove Gallery business was also busy following the successful preview the Friday before of work by artist Duncan MacGregor.

At 3pm the parade set off led by Town Mayor Daniel Chichester–Miles and actor Larry Lamb waving from a splendid horse drawn carriage. Afterwards, the VIPs, including the cast from Peter Pan, this year’s Alban Arena pantomime, headed for Thompson’s Close and Breathing Space. Owners Keith and Jane Lunn had opened the new Blueberry Cafe for the day and were hosting a special VIP room.

Here Larry Lamb (above with the Town Mayor) took some time out to talk to Editor Ron Taylor and Amanda Thomas about his role as Captain Hook and his inevitable type casting.Outside, the queue for the Santa’s Grotto stretched right down to the High Street. As dusk fell and the temperature dropped even further,

the voices of carol singers filled the air, and then to a loud countdown and cheer, the Christmas lights went on. The switch was flicked by Larry Lamb, the panto cast, the Town Mayor and special guest Aimee, a Year 5 pupil from Grove School, and winner of the Christmas Poster Competition.

By the end of the day, Harpenden Youth Town Council had made over £200 selling hot chocolate and apple punch and Young Enterprise team, Horizon, from St Albans High School for Girls (below) had sold a good number of their wonderful Harpenden calendars.

Christmas is such a special time, requiring something really personal as a gift to show that you care.

Photographs of family or friends taken with care, then framed, can make great Christmas presents. So why not choose Cocoon Photography in Redbourn, previously known as Cocoon Imaging?

Meet up with Kim and Jeanette at their studio in Redbourn, or out on location for some special, natural photographs of you and your family.

“We like our photo shoots to be fun, whether we're photographing a walk in wellies in the woods, a beautiful pregnancy, a newborn baby, a luxurious boudoir session or a conventional studio group”

We’d love to hear from you soon and make your Christmas special.

Inspired by heritage, quality and the vibrance of London, Tamara Fogle bags never shout but are always noticed. Tamara’s bags are all produced in family run workshops in London, ensuring the finest quality of British Industry.

Their soft hides have a water-based aniline finish, and use fewer chemicals in their tanning process than some hides, making them kinder to the environment than many leathers. With this slightly more transparent finish, some natural markings and scars will be visible, enhancing the natural character of the hides. This gives Tamara’s bags a unique modern appeal, in timeless styles. Fabrics are re-used primarily for their aesthetics, but in doing so create a smaller carbon footprint, and less waste.

Wine School gift vouchers

New Wine School opens in HarpendenWine lovers in Harpenden will have good cause to celebrate in January, with the arrival of a new wine school offering a range of user-friendly courses and tastings. Hertfordshire Wine School opens its doors to offer introductory and specialist tastings on weekday evenings, and once a month on Saturdays, in Harpenden and St Albans.

And, if you’re looking for an original Christmas gift this year, all courses and tastings are available to buy as gift vouchers for family and friends and can be ordered online at www.hertfordshirewineschool.com

The school, which is part of an independent national company, and not linked to any wine merchants or retailers, will be run by David Rough (above), of Harpenden.

David, who holds a WSET (Wine and Spirit Education Trust) qualification, says “The courses and tastings offer a great opportunity to try new wines and learn a little more about the subject in a relaxed environment. There is a steady and growing interest in wine and we are lucky, in this country, to have access to a vast choice of wine from all over the world.”

To book a course, or buy gift vouchers, which range in price from £20 to £75, visit www.hertfordshirewineschool.com or phone David on 01582 768716.

Harpenden Gang Show – the annual miracle! Jan 11th - 15th

The 62nd edition of the show promises to be packed with music, dance and comedy. There is something for everybody, with music ranging from Doris Day through Gene Vincent and The Jam to Pixie Lott, some innovative dance routines from new choreographer Rachel Glynn and some hilarious and clever sketches.

Scouting is big in Harpenden, Wheathampstead and Kimpton, from where the cast is drawn. Such is the demand for places in the cast that over 80 young people are on the waiting list. The 152 on stage are supported by over 100 adults backstage – it really is a coming together of all ages and abilities from across the community.

How it started in HarpendenOn 22nd October 1949, 86 Scouts took to the stage of the Public Hall to perform Harpenden’s very own version of the original

Gang Show. Such was the success of this one-off that it became an annual event and is still happening today. 152 Cubs, Scouts and Explorers annually tread the boards for six performances.

“To see such an enthusiastic group of young people,” says Ewan Murray the producer, “several of whom have two left feet in September, emerge in January after four months of hard rehearsal to perform a spectacularly energetic and vibrant show leaving their public baying for more is nothing short of a miracle.”

The photographs below from the last show at the Public Hall prove that nothing in Harpenden can beat it.

Tickets for the Public Hall ranging from £8 to £15, are on sale now – hurry to call the Box Office on 07787 606076 or e-mail [email protected] to ensure you get yours before they sell out.

Choose Dyrberg Kern this Christmas for that extra sparkle. This Danish brand offer fabulous Swarovski based design, they also use enamel, glass, leather and pearl.

There are three main themes this Christmas in order to satisfy most tastes. Byzantium (above) is a collection a great balance of day and evening. This collection focuses on silver matched with cool blues and purples and deep black. Match this Byzantium with jeans, the little black dress your black or grey day looks, and do sparkle it up with some crystals for some serious bling.

Then Con Amore, the secret of seduction. This is perfect gift for that special person you love. Get ready to fall head-over-heals over the heart shape. We dare you to resist this everlasting symbol of love.

All designed to accentuate the beauty you were born with. Go for subtle textures that creates a beautiful 3d effect, or for the classic colours of love, red and hot pink, all the more ravishing in leather with a discrete embossed DK logo as seen on large pendants which can be used as key rings or bag charms.

Finally the Tartan collection (below) has a mix of beads, enamel and leather, in colours of green, burgundy and dark smokey blue. Perfect for a fabulous day look.

Experience the Dryberg Kern collection exclusively at OUI in Harpenden and be tempted.

Beautifully made wooden toys for active imaginations. The perfect Christmas gift for for boys and girls right up to 15 years of age and even young hearted adults!

But why wooden toys?

There have been quite a few studies on the effects of the types of toys we give our children. Flashing lights and pushing buttons, does very little to stimulate the brain or to activate imagination in a child.

The toys sold by Woody’s create a world into which a child can explore and enjoy their childhood without growing up too quickly.

They have an extensive range of toys on display in the shop, easily recognizable by its colourful exterior. Call into the shop to find out more.

Stylish, unusual and interesting Xmas gifts

Threads: The Gift and Needlecraft shop are already well into swing of the festive season with the beautiful displays of Christmas decorations, wreaths, garlands and candles.

Lara Wares (one of the owners of this family business) says that customers really start thinking about Christmas shopping at the beginning of November after half-term.

They have however been noticing more people shopping earlier this year possibly to spread out the cost. The most popular buys this year have been jewellery, scarves, Redfoot party shoes (flat shoes that fold up in your handbag) and Cath Kidston accessories.

Threads are looking forward to another busy festive period and would like to really thank all their customers and wish them a very happy Christmas.

Members of Harpenden Round Table are busy putting the final preparations to Santa's Sleigh.  Father Christmas will be joining them to tour the streets of Harpenden from 1st December all the way through to Christmas Eve. They will also be collecting in the High Street on Sunday 19th December.

The Santa appeal is generously supported by the good citizens of Harpenden to the tune of £6,000 to £7,000 per year.  This year the chosen charities are The Alzheimer's Society, Luton and Dunstable Neo Natal Intensive Care Appeal and Round Tables Children's Wish (an organisation which helps seriously ill childrens' dreams come true).

Harpenden Round Table is an organisation for men aged between 18 and 45 and meets locally (normally over a pint) on the first and third Wednesdays of each month.  There is a varied programme of activities and social events during the year and it also organises the Town's carnival.  New members are always welcome.
