The Doddington Diary Team would like to thank the Carnival Committee for organising another fantastic Carnival Day! I’m sure most of us cannot fully appreciate the work and commitment which goes into a day like this, but we are very grateful to everyone who volunteers or makes donations; the committee, local businesses, hauliers, float decorators, village groups and everyone else who supports the carnival. Without the help from everyone including all of you who put your pennies in a collection bucket, Doddington would not have a Carnival Day – so thank you everyone and we hope you enjoy this Carnival special edition of the Diary!

We hope you enjoy reading the Diary each month and we work hard with the help of village groups to try and make it interesting and informative. In order to continue successfully with the Diary each month, we need another person to join our team who can help with the finances and adverts. If you would like to be involved with something that makes a valuable contribution to your village, please contact us.

Best WishesThe Doddington Diary Team

LIONEL WALDEN PRIMARY SCHOOLDuring the first week of June, all classes including Pre-School, enjoyed International Week. The aim of this themed week was to create opportunities for our pupils to learn about other countries, cultures and customs and to raise their awareness of similarities and differences. The children particularly enjoyed the art, cooking and food tasting activities! The displays throughout our main corridor showcase the wonderful work produced. We also participated in Walk to School and Road Safety Week – this takes place twice a year. We encouraged everyone to walk to school to increase exercise and to cut down on air pollution and traffic congestion. We hope everyone can maintain this and walk to school whenever possible. Our Year 1 and Year 2 classes invited parents in to join them at their Reading Cafés. Whilst enjoying refreshments, they completed a range of reading activities together. Parents of pupils in Years 5 and 6 came to our Cyber-Café event. With children everywhere accessing more and more information through the internet and communicating via social media outside of school, the likelihood of them experiencing inappropriate material and even cyber-bullying has increased. We need our children to know of the risks involved and what to do if they are concerned. Our Year 6 pupils took part in the Bikeability programme which provided them with on-road experiences and taught them about road safety when cycling.Class Assemblies have continued to take place and be enjoyed by the whole school, parents and grandparents. Year 3 pupils gave a dramatic performance about World War II. Year 2 told us about their ‘Pirates’ topic and Year 1 shared information about ‘Forests’. Our Reception Class provided an A to Z of their learning and school year. We held our Sports Afternoon and invited parents and grandparents to come and cheer on the pupils. We also hosted the Inter-Village Schools’ Sports Afternoon and Lionel Walden were announced as Overall Winners – well done to all who represented the school. This term, the children have all enjoyed school trips to places of interest linked to their topics. These have included South Angle Farm Park, Ferry Meadows Country Park, Wandlebury Country Park, Stibbington Educational Centre and Cadbury World. The older pupils thoroughly enjoyed a residential trip to the Isle of Wight.Once again, staff and pupils enjoyed designing, making, gluing and painting components for our ‘Britain in Bloom’ float as part of the Doddington Carnival. We were pleased to be judged Junior Winners this year. Thank you to the Carnival and Sports Committee for all their hard work – the school enjoys being part of this fantastic community event. The Lionel Walden School Association organised another successful Summer Fair which was enjoyed by pupils and their families. Over £6000 has been raised this year – thank you to everyone involved for their continued hard work and for everyone’s support at events.

Even if you didn’t win - you will have a fun evening and all the money raised goes to next year’s Carnival!!

Presentation Evening

on 15th September

atThe Village Hall

Doddington Street PrideYou may have seen our stall on the playing fields on Sports’ Day. We were working to a theme of Teddy Bears’ Picnic, although some of the soft toys we were raffling could be better described as honorary bears perhaps! Still, that didn’t put people off from having a go and we raised a nice sum to invest in future projects. As well as the toy raffle, our fundraising was boosted by the young people and support staff from March House who made a huge contribution by selling their delicious home baked cakes. They also play a big role in our litter picking activities as members of the group. At the close of Sports’ Day we did a litter pick on the playing field, although it was remarkably clean bearing in mind the day’s events.Hopefully we will soon be putting in a bid for grant funding to restore some of the ponds in the village and we will post future items in the Diary about this project. In the meantime, we will revert to our normal litter picking role and will meet on Saturday 4th August at 2pm at the Clock Tower so if you are interested in joining the group or just in helping out for an hour on the day please come along.Contact [email protected]

JUNE BULLETIN FROM CAMBRIDGESHIRE FIRE AND RESCUE SERVICE

Think twice before jumping into water this summer Would you jump into a river, lake or any other open waterway on a hot sunny day? Do you know what hazards lie beneath the water? Or how cold the water is? Your fire service has pledged to deliver water safety education to every school in Cambridge-shire following the tragic death of a teenage boy last summer. But there is only so much we can do and we’re calling on parents, carers and peers to talk each other about water safety. Some things to remember: You do not know what hazards lie beneath the surface of rivers, lakes, canals, etc. Strong undercurrents can be tough to conquer, even if you know how to swim

Cambridgeshire’s waterways are cold – even on the hottest days of the year – and this has a dramatic effect on your body’s ability to swim and get yourself out of trouble, should you get stuck. If someone is in trouble, call 999 immediately. Do not hesitate to call the emergency services and give clear details of your location.

For the latest news, incidents and safety advice, or to contact us, log on to www.cambsfire.gov.uk . Find us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. Call 01480 444500 for enquiries.
