Principal’s Message It was a strange sight that I came across last Monday morning in the playground! A huge crane was lifting large parts of our old demountable classroom high into the air and placing them onto trucks. Having had this building on site for over twenty years I‟m told, I am sure there would be many memories surrounding it for those who spent a year or two inside it. In the end, however, it was going to be far too expensive to refurbish to modern standards and so we had to let it go.

In its place there has been turf laid near where we will put the garden shed and soon to be designed vegetable garden, which our SRC are busy developing with the aid of the „Alive‟ program through the University of Western Sydney, Hawkesbury.

Value of the Week – Excellence

  • I was so proud to accompany our SRC students to the University of Western Sydney last Tuesday to take part in the „Alive‟ planning day. Our students represented us brilliantly throughout the day as they learnt more about environmental sustainability. We visited the university‟s own „earth care centre‟ to study the types of crops we might grow and the best way to organise our garden. Some other highlights of the day included Dr James Arvanitakis telling us about his amazing trip to Bolivia that started his interest in helping to save the environment. We also enjoyed the native animals brought along by WIRES. A local television documentary team were present throughout the day, so our students may be lucky enough to see themselves on TVS (Channel 44) in the near future too!

Coles Sport Coles have commenced their own support program for schools through the „Coles Sports for Schools‟. If you are able to collect your points and return them to school, we will again select some excellent resources for our students.

  • Rugby Union Superstar! Congratulations to George Crawley who was successful in achieving a place in the Western Sydney Region Representative Rugby Team. George competed against well over a hundred talented players to make the final 15 players. He will travel to Armidale in August to play in the State Championships. Best of luck George! Woolies Earn and Learn

Keep sending in your stickers for the Woolworths Earn and Learn program. The collection box is located in the front office. Stewart House The collection for Stewart House Clothing appeal bags is 13

    th June.

Please make sure the clothing bags arrive before this date. Athletics Carnival Wednesday 18

th July is now our confirmed Athletics Carnival date. The

day will be held at Tamplin Field between 9am and 2pm. Some preliminary field events will be held at school before the day in order to complete our carnival on time. Further information will be sent home before the term‟s end. Teacher Professional Learning Our entire staff have been involved in initial training and development within the Australian Curriculum. Other small schools in our „learning community‟ are forming stage based teams to learn about the changes that will be necessary for its 2014 implementation at Maraylya PS. Thanks especially to Mrs Sadler who was the leader for all the other Stage 1 teachers in her mathematics session which was held at Cattai Public School. Our next session will be held at Maroota Public School in Term 3.

  • Class News K Again thank you, to all the Mums, Dads and Grandmas who come in each morning to help with groups. You are very much appreciated. Kindy have been learning how to write descriptions. We have written a description

about a Giant Panda that is up in our room. Our buddies typed up the information we told them after reading a book on Giant Pandas in class. We have also been learning about “Me”. We have our baby photos up in the Kindy window. See if you can guess who they are?

1 Year 1 have had an exciting two weeks of learning. In English, the children have been working hard on the spelling rule dropping the “silent e” and adding “ing”. In Week 7 the rule has been about adding “ing” to a word with a short vowel followed by a single consonant, double the consonant before adding ïng”. In Talking and Listening, the children have been speaking about their families. For Week 8, the focus is “What I would do if I was rich” and in Week 9 the focus is “My best friend and why”. In our reading program, Focus on Reading, the class focus has been summarising. For Mathematics, Year 1 has been learning about addition, multiplication (groups of and sharing), position and area. In HSIE we will be looking at the Environment. Last week we looked at the Hawkesbury River and how polluted it could become if we do not look after it. If you are at the school this week please come along to Year 1‟s classroom and have a look, the children are very happy to discuss their river. Child Protection for Week 7 was about; “How do I protect myself from disease?”, focusing on immunisation. Lesson 8 will be “How do I protect myself from the sun.” We have just taken delivery of some new home readers, but before they are able to be borrowed, the books need to be covered. If you could spare some time to cover some books could you please talk to Mrs Heinrich or Mrs Sadler.

  • 2/3 We are finalising our study of British Colonisation with our class talks given during weeks 9 & 10 (last 2 weeks of term). If you have any questions please come and see me. Most of 2/3 are part of the massed Hawkesbury Festival choir and we had our first rehearsal on Tuesday. Everyone was excited and tried really hard. A great day was had by us all. Mrs Bennett and I are in the process of organising the 3/4 camp for this year, it will be held in the last week of Term 3, Wednesday 19th to Thursday 20th September. We will be going to the Powerhouse Museum and then for a „Zoo Snooze‟ at Taronga. A note will be out soon. We are just waiting on confirmation back from venues and transport. In other news, we have some new home readers for 2/3 to read, but we need some help to cover these books. If anyone can cover a little bundle please come and see either Mrs Bennett or myself.

4/5 4/5 have started learning about magnets in Science. So far, we have been learning about north and south poles, forces and pulling features of a magnet.

Interesting Fact- When you put the north pole of a magnet and the north pole of another magnet together, they repel from each other. However, when you put the south pole of a magnet to the north pole of another magnet then the magnets will attract.

The class also looked at objects that attract and do not attract using a magnet and will be doing this over several more weeks. In reading groups this week, we have been focusing on questioning and inferring with characters from our focus novels.

  • 6 Year 6 students have been busy completing mathematics assessments on this term‟s work. We have completed our unit of work on problem solving, using various strategies along the way. We have read Andy Griffiths stories to further our work on Focus On Reading. (It is easy to make connections to his writing because he writes like he is a child.) We will also be looking at how he, as an author, engages the reader. We have also worked on using figurative language including similes and metaphors to improve our writing. Some of our recent work is below.

Louise Louise is jar of honey.

She has hair the colour of a beautiful sunset. She will always stick with you.

Louise can go with anything you put her with. She is the sweetest thing ever.

You couldn’t pick a better jar of honey than her. By Lara Parish

Having completed our wire sculptures this week, we will begin creating our own plaster of Paris sculptures next week!
