Many seniors find it hard to make ends meet. Some have found a way to stretch their dollars. Seniors use couponing, sale shopping, and low cost alternative items, but sometimes cutting back still is not enough.

Sometimes what it takes to make ends meet is more income! There are many options for seniors to increase their income. What is important is to find the option that works for you. Common options include:

Senior Community Service Employment Program – Looking to work with an organization that makes a difference? Eligible seniors work in this program 20 hours per week with an organization serving the public.

Starting a Business – Are you experienced in a particular area or field? You may be interested in being your own boss and doing the work you have done for years

Turn a Hobby into Income – Do you love babies, pets, or gardening? Do you like woodworking, repairing things, or yard work? You can certainly turn those interests into income with a little effort and marketing of your services.

Part-time Job – Would you like to work, but don’t want to return to a 40 hour work week? A part-time position may be a good fit for you.

Renting Out a Room – Do you have an extra bedroom available in your home? If so, a paying tenant can produce some serious income.

Miscellaneous Opportunities – Get paid for shopping, giving your opinion and more. The opportunities for this are not always available, but when they are, the demands and time commitment are often low.

So many options with various levels of demands and opportunities – work with a Financial Coach, free of charge, to decide on what options you like best and find good opportunities for you. Call 302-651-3427 today.

Need help with budgeting and saving? Want a free economic checkup? See Kathleen or Jenna of $tand By Me 50+

or call them at 651-3401 or 651-3427.

CAREGIVER’S CORNER

CAREGIVERS CORNER: Flu + You Everyone’s immune system typically weakens with age, making it harder for us to fight infection and disease as we get older. As a result, adults aged 65 and older—even those who are healthy and active—are more vulnerable to influenza (commonly known as the “flu”). 1. People 65 and older should not wait for flu season to start to get their annual

flu shot. Get vaccinated as soon as possible when vaccine is available because the body’s immune system and its ability to fight illness decreases with age, meaning older adults are more vulnerable to the flu and its related complications.

2. There are a few vaccine options available, and some have been developed for specific stages of life. In addition to the traditional flu vaccine (which helps protect against three strains of the flu virus), there is a quadrivalent vaccine (which helps protect against four strains), and a higher dose vaccine that is designed specifically for adults aged 65 and older. By improving the production of antibodies in older patients, the higher dose vaccine can provide a stronger immune response to influenza than traditional vaccines.

3. The flu can be easily passed from person to person, so it’s important that those who spend time with older adults, such as family and caregivers, also get vaccinated. An annual flu shot is a Medicare Part B benefit. This means that the vaccine is covered with no copay for Medicare beneficiaries 65 years of age and older. Talk to your health care provider today about the dangers of the flu, the benefits of annual immunization to help protect against the flu, and the best flu vaccine option to meet your needs.

Flu shots will be available at Wilmington Senior Center on 9/25.

Grandparent Support Group meets Tuesdays from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.

Caregiver Support Group meets second Thursday of the month at 1:30-3:00 p.m.

as a result of the National Family Caregiver Support Program, Title III-E of the Older Americans Act.
