Bituchem’s Maintenance Free Material used for Major University DevelopmentBituchem’s specialist hard landscaping material has been applied to provide a new landscape for Hertfordshire University’s College Lane Campus.

As part of a major redevelopment project of the university’s existing campus, Bituchem supplied around 3,000m² of its bestselling Natratex Gravel to provide maintenance-free footpaths across the campus.

The Natratex Gravel footpaths are just one part of the attractive landscape created by The Landmark Practice (www.thelandmarkpractice.com), which felt that it was the right product to create the desired landscape for the university grounds. Andy Spargo, Principal Landscape Architect at The

Landmark Practice commented, “We are very pleased with the aesthetics of the landscape created using Bituchem’s Natratex Gravel and for this reason we would definitely consider it for future projects.”

Natratex Gravel is one of Bituchem’s many products that is based on tried and tested asphalt technology to offer

a high performance, hardwearing surface. The specialist material uses a clear binder system with decorative buff coloured aggregates, with the appearance of natural stone, to create a durable surface for pedestrian and light vehicular use.

Natratex Gravel offers a fully compacted finish compared to real gravel, making it safer for pedestrian use and is virtually maintenance free once applied.

Further information is available from Bituchem on: +44 (0)1594 826768 or +44 (0)7584 311266, by emailing: [email protected] or by visiting the company’s website at: www.bituchem.comBrett and Marshall K Paving

combine TalentsBrett Landscaping, one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of high quality paving products, has recently performed in partnership with installers, Marshall K Paving Contractors Ltd, to supply and install over 700m2 of paving at the National Centre for Circus Arts in London.

The Operations Team at the National Centre, headed by Jon, investigated potential solutions at the 2015 London Home Building & Developer Show held at ExCeL in September and discovered that Brett Landscaping, with its strong focus on customer relationships, could offer more than just the essential materials.

Brett was subsequently considered, alongside other suppliers and contractors, as part of a tendering process to select the right partner for the paving scheme.

The area prohibits the use of articulated lorries in fulfilling deliveries, a complication which meant both supplier and installer needed the logistical capabilities to work with restricted motorised equipment, as well

as the aptitude to turn the project around within two weeks, in time for a scheduled acrobatic symposium.

Now completed, the Courtyard at the National Centre for Circus Arts is being put to use, and has a busy itinerary of event bookings to look forward to.

Longest Ultra Violet Liner strengthens high risk culvertLanes Group has installed its longest ultra violet light-cured pipe liner to date in a deep culvert considered at high risk of collapse.

The liner, which was 202m long and weighed 8 tonnes, was installed in a surface water culvert for Caerphilly County Borough Council, in South Wales.

The 750mm diameter concrete pipe had been found to be badly cracked at a number of places along 150m of its length between two manholes.

Rehabilitating the culvert was made a priority because, if it had collapsed, it would have posed a major flooding risk to nearby homes.

Excavation would have been prohibitively expensive and would have severely disrupted a public park under which the culvert ran.

Access problems at the upstream end of the pipe meant conventional hot water CIPP (cure in place pipe) lining was not feasible.

In the final stage, an extra-long UV light train, brought over from Germany, was used to cure the resin in the liner, a process that took six hours.

Greenways plants energy efficiency in college schemesThe £5.8 million ‘Collections House’ development at Warwickshire College Group’s Pershore College has been completed following a building services design project by sustainability specialist Greenways.

Delivered as a design & build project based on architectural designs prepared for the college by Hitchman Stone Partnership, the BREEAM ‘Very Good’ development provides a two-storey teaching facility for the prestigious horticultural college.

The scheme also includes a double

height greenhouse as the entrance lobby to showcase the rare and delicate specimens grown by students. Greenways specified a Horticultural Management System (HMS) that controls the heating and ventilation to the Collections House. The HMS is linked to an external weather station located on the roof of the new building.

The Collections House is ventilated via a natural ventilation scheme again controlled by the HMS. The weather station will monitor wind speed and direction, air and humidity temperatures and even rainfall.

The HMS system enables students to monitor the atmospheric conditions within the Collections House. Ventilation will be increased in the morning to encourage plant growth with an influx of cool, fresh air and rainwater harvesting will provide water for the irrigation system.

Sundolitt XPS – Provides strength and stability in sustainable green roofA state-of-the art green roof is set to provide warmth and protection as well as a perfect natural environment for flora and fauna in a new £8 million community care centre in picturesque Darley Dale in Derbyshire. And at the heart of the inverted ‘green roof’ solution is Sundolitt XPS, the extreme strength, extruded polystyrene sheet designed to provide high insulation levels, strength and rigidity.

The UK’s leading independent green roof installer, BBS Green Roofing Ltd, was briefed to provide and install the high-tech yet natural roofing solution for the

Meadow View Community Care Centre. It is a new facility from Derbyshire County Council and includes 16 long-term specialist residential care beds, 16 short-term beds aimed at helping people return home after respite care and rehabilitation and a 20 place day centre, café and health and well-being zone.

Sundolitt XPS is manufactured in a wide range of thicknesses and sheet sizes, the primary range having a thermal conductivity of 0.033 – 0.037W/mK (EN 13164). According to the type of use, it achieves outstanding compression resistance from 200 – 700kPa (EN826) and offers exceptionally low moisture absorption through its closed-pore system – making it an ideal thermal insulator for a wide range of commercial and domestic construction applications.

Sundolitt XPSSundolitt XPS 300 (extruded polystyrene) forms the core of a waterproof, load-bearing, high insulation roof system at South St Andrew Square – a prestigious £75 million, 190,000 sq. ft. mixed office, retail and residential scheme in the heart of Edinburgh’s historic ‘New Town’ area. Following the demolition of the former B-listed building on the site, the new development – expected to be completed by the end of this year – features a bold collaborative design from CDA and Gareth Hoskins Architects which won the backing of the City of Edinburgh planners for its ‘high-quality contemporary architectural expression.’

South St Andrew Square is a joint venture between Standard Life Investments Pooled Pension Property Fund and partner Peveril Securities. The main contractor is Bowmer and Kirkland.

The retail opportunities in the development have already attracted three restaurant chains to open their first branches in the UK outside London including a New York contemporary steak house, a barbecue lobster shack and a Bombay-style café. This led Councillor Frank Ross, the city’s economy leader, to say, “St Andrew Square looks set to become one of the top leisure destinations in the capital.”

Plytech QuicktrimQuicktrim, the original flat roof edging system, designed and manufactured by Plytech has been around since 1999 and is still widely recognised to be one of the best systems available. Now, the Quicktrim system is even better, following the introduction of new universal corners.

The new corners fit both Check Kerb and Drip Edge trim sections so installation is now much simpler. There’s no need to cut it down to size for a Check Kerb to Drip Edge

corner. The installer simply needs to put the corner section in place, gently hammer the flat head nails through the centre of the fixing slots, butt up the trim and apply the joint clip.

For more information on the Quicktrim or the complete Rubberall EPDM Rubber Roof system, please contact Plytech on: +44 (0)1392 454810.

Polygon unveils advanced Technical Drying AcademyPolygon is delighted to unveil a new, state of the art Technical Drying Academy (TDA), situated at its headquarters in Huntingdon. A significant investment was made by Polygon to create this custom built training facility. It is believed to be the most advanced of its kind and will enable the development of technical excellence through the simulation of damage scenarios.

Each of the three rooms has been constructed using different materials for the walls, floors, ceilings and insulation. The materials were specifically selected based on UK construction methods and will give technicians exposure to the variety of building materials they will encounter.

Rooms will be flooded with around 1,000 litres of water; the approximate volume of water that would flow from a real leak during a one hour period. The TDA will then be left for 24 hours before the technicians are called in to assess the damage and actively learn about the different technologies and methods needed to restore each room to its pre incident condition.

Building structures are under attack from Rain and SunBricks and mortar are like moisture reservoirs that fill during a rain event they wick water into themselves because they are porous. Properly built brickwork will give many years of trouble free service, but add an extension or conservatory onto an exterior wall and there could be trouble ahead.

The problem is both rain and sun together can exacerbate the excessive moisture in walls and cavities. Wind driven rain will track by capillary suction into dryer areas of brickwork. Solar radiation heats saturated brickwork and will drive moisture vapour inward as well as outwards. A higher vapour pressure and temperature differential forms between the cavity and cool interior, drawing in the moisture vapour, which will then condense into liquid and present as damp spots within the existing building or building extension interior.

The Solution is to apply ProShield XT water repellent masonry cream to the exterior masonry walls. It’s quick and easy to apply and being water based, is environmentally friendly, with no VOCs.

Construction Consultancy of the Month

Roofing Solutions Provider of the Month

Building Products for the IndustryHere at Building and Facilities News we are incredibly proud to present Hambleside Danelaw as our respected Roofing Solutions Provider of the Month.

The company, which was originally established in 1976 as Hambleside Manufacturing Ltd, operates from its headquarters in Northamptonshire, England (an office and manufacturing plant) and an additional factory facility in Inverness, Scotland.

Hambleside Danelaw boasts a wide range of building solutions; engineering everything from GRP flashings, GRP profiled rooflights, wall lights and cladding to Dryseal GRP roofing systems and roof, cavity and underfloor ventilation products and ancillaries. These innovative roofing products, which are predominantly made from fibreglass (GRP) and moulded plastic, are extensively appreciated for their exceptional quality and cost-effectiveness.

“Due to the scope and range of products supplied our customer base is equally varied,” Group Marketing Executive Lottie Thornton-Hazel explained. “The common denominator is the roofing contractor; this could be a contractor working for a house builder or local housing authority through to a cladding specialist constructing a vast industrial warehouse. Through our CPD programme we also work with architects and consulting engineers to ensure they are aware of the latest solutions available from Hambleside Danelaw.”

The company is split into three departments which concentrate on different roofing specialisms. The first is the roofing & ventilation division, which provides pitched roofing ancillary solutions (pre-formed valley troughs, vents, soakers, dry verges, gutters and GRP flashings) for roof junction detail and structure security. Rooflights, wall lights & cladding form the second strand; low-carbon components designed for building energy performance, and the roofing systems segment focuses on the production and supply of the Dryseal mechanically-fixed GRP flat roofing membrane system.

The Zenon range is of particular significance, as the

recently rebranded array of rooflights available offer 30% greater light transmission when compared to the more traditional prototypes. An enhanced thermal performance and reduced carbon footprint is made possible with the Zenon Insulator core and incorporated materials.

In terms of recent advancements, Hambleside Danelaw has just released its interlocking dry verge system as the newest component to its dry fix line. Designed for quick and easy installation, the system comprises a market leading 355mm maximum batten gauge and clip over design suitable for usage on both roof refurbishments and new builds.

When asked about the company’s plans for the future, Lottie concluded, “We continually endeavour to be an environmentally responsible manufacturer, working to reduce our production waste and carbon footprint through product innovation and sophisticated manufacturing processes. Our focus in the short term is to ensure that our customers can benefit from the new 30,000ft production facility at Daventry, an extension which we plan to have this up and running later this summer.

“Our ranges are original and over the years we have listened to industry feedback to fine hone our designs because we strive to deliver time-saving solutions to

the end user. We constantly review our product offering to ensure it satisfies our customers’ current and future needs and we are pleased to announce that we have some exciting developments in the pipeline that we look forward to bringing to the market over the coming months.”

Concentrated Consultancy ServicesBarker Consultants has been listed as our highly deserved Construction Consultancy of the Month, we are pleased to announce here at Building and Facilities News.

The practice, which is based in Putney, London, was established in 1993 by founder Bernadette Barker. Catering to the high end shop fitting, retail and hospitality sectors, the business provides specialist consultancy services to clients, developers, architects, shopfitters, contractors, subcontractors and designers working on projects of varying sizes and complexities.

Bernadette is a sole trader well practiced in offering guidance and support in regards to construction, health & safety in construction, disputes, fire safety and fire safety management. As an accredited adjudicator and chartered architect & arbitrator, she has worked on a multitude of sites including hotels, offices, gymnasiums, restaurants and residential accommodations.

“I am a highly trained and experienced professional offering a personalised and cost-effective service,” Bernadette explained. “I do not subcontract, so my work is very flexible, and I have a great deal of expertise courtesy of my extensive experience working on a wide

range of commercial and industrial developments – I have even designed and built property in Sri Lanka (Reef Villa & Spa www.reefvilla.com).”

One of Bernadette’s main focuses is on dispute management and settlement, as a key member of both the Construction Industry Council Panel of Adjudicators and the Presidential Panel of Construction Adjudicators at the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. As a fundamental part of construction industry policy, statutory adjudication is the best way to resolve disputes in the sector, as binding decisions can be made efficiently and cost-effectively for the benefit of both parties. Holding a position as a party representative on the Association of Independent Construction Adjudicators (www.aica-adjudication.co.uk/representatives.asp) further verifies Bernadette’s validity in this segment.

Taking a central role within the Business Arbitration Scheme (BAS) means Bernadette is also involved with a

fixed fee programme offering reassurance to customers in relation to expenses. This particular service was organised by CIArb as a private and confidential means to provide simple and timely resolutions of disagreements of low to medium monetary value (£5,000-£100,000) by arbitration before an arbitrator.

It is also important to mention that Bernadette is a registered Fire Risk Assessor with the Institution of Fire Engineers. This particular strand involves the provision of fire risk assessments, previous fire risk assessment reviews, assistance for notices received under The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, fire management plans & procedures and fire safety advice.

When asked about recent changes and future plans, Bernadette expressed an interest in continued growth and participation with the necessary industry-specific institutions, “In 2015, my workload increased to take into account the expanded nature of the recently changed CDM Regulations,” she summarised. “Going forward I am keen to develop my involvement with Dispute Boards (I am a Fellow of the Dispute Board Federation and a member of Dispute Boards MENA Dispute Boards MENA) whilst increasing my presence in the Middle East with our second base in Sri Lanka.”

“Quicker, easier and a safer way to install a stove”Last year, a test was carried out at Kiwa testing station on the difference, when installing a stove in a fireplace opening using a register plate, with a 5kW multi fuel stove burning wood, this was then repeated using the same stove in the Stove Box. The stove box is a Hetas Approved product.

The results were that the stove in the Stove Box got hotter quicker, stayed hotter longer, using less fuel over the same period. Designed by an Hetas installer in 2010 to save time on site, but since has developed with many advantages and can be chopped into an existing chimney breast, built round with a false chimney breast with a new flue up or up and out through the wall and last year the eco-space saver was designed with the help of the local building control and is ideal for a room when space is an issue with no chimney when a gas, wood or multi fuel stove is required.

The Stove Box is chopped through the interior and exterior wall, a small foundation is put down and the Stove Box is placed on the hearth insulating as this is built up in

brickwork to a small tiled roof.

The stove is then installed using an adjustable collar for easy connection to the new flue system, which is then transferred through to the exterior up to the required height.

The Stove Box can be used with Wood burning and Multi fuel Stoves, gas and also electric fires.

Heating Solutions Company of the Month

A heating revolutionBuilding and Facilities News is extremely proud to present Minus 7 as its selected Heating Solutions Company of the Month.

An industry leading, award-winning designer and manufacturer of building integrated renewable heating systems, Minus 7, has created a revolutionary system to deliver zero net carbon heating and hot water with low running costs. The award-winning hybrid system uses the best of solar thermal, photovoltaic, heat pump and energy storage technologies in a unique and appealingly simple building-integrated solution.

“We are de-carbonising heat and reducing fuel poverty across the UK,” commented Martin Wright, Director at Minus 7. “We have created a system that is truly unique and provides real benefits to the user. Meeting the needs of housing associations, builders and developers, the system is different to anything else on the market.”

The hybrid system works in 3 parts: Roof, Energy Processor and Thermal Stores. Working with conventional roofing methods, Minus 7’s technologically advanced, BBA approved Tileplanks have been used on new-builds and retrofits, including listed buildings where the roof needed replacing.

As well as being aesthetically pleasing and blending in beautiful with the local environment, the Minus7 Tileplanks offer fantastic value for money as they allow customers to generate heat and create a long-term income from their roofs. The roofs have an expected instalment to first maintenance span of 35 years, a truly long term investment in renewable energy.

The Solar Energy Processor (SEP) is the intelligent heart of the System; where the controls, firmware and heat pump are housed. Thermal energy gathered from the roof is processed by the SEP before being sent to the thermal stores. Heat from the thermal stores is transferred to your chosen central heating emitters and domestic hot water circuit via heat exchangers within the SEP.

The System needs two thermal stores: the hot store, which is warmer, contains water and is the thermal energy source for the building; the cold store is cooler and contains a mixture of 30% concentration by volume ethylene-glycol based anti-freeze and is the thermal energy source for the water-to-water heat-pump.

The stores are both purpose-built tanks with 200mm of insulation on all surfaces. The size and number of stores needed depends on the scope of the project, but they can be sited in various places such as in the foundations of the building, in an outhouse or garage, or partially buried in the garden, or under a patio. Minus7’s in-house design team pride themselves on the working relationship

that they maintain with their clients. “We spend time to provide the back up and support needed to guarantee that the end product will be extremely functional, aesthetically pleasing, and an enhancement to the build well into the future.”

A highly trained team of engineers install the whole system and once installed the Minus7 maintenance team remotely monitor the System using data collected via the data logger built into the SEP. The owner, in turn, can also access this data in a more simplified manner using a ‘System Status Panel’ which displays how much energy they are generating, using and storing.

“The system was recently installed in 2 3-bedroom properties, cutting their energy bills from £1,200 per year to £200 per year” explained Martin. “Our aim now is to educate the industry on the brilliance of intelligent hybrid systems and drive the business forward by cutting heating costs for as many customers as possible.”

Our considerable industry expertise is available to assist architects, developers and planners to meet planning requirements for biodiversity. Specially adapted boxes are available for render, stone and weatherboarding.

A feature unique to Bird Brick Houses is our brick matching service. This gives the nesting box a perfect match to the host wall, thus creating two significant benefits. Firstly, the brick pattern of the host wall is not disrupted and so the box blends seamlessly; in fact, it can be hard to spot until you see a bird fly in or out! Secondly, it means that no brick cutting is required on site, making installation a remarkably efficient process for the builder.

Our award winning team are passionate about wildlife and combine this passion with over 30 years of experience in the construction sector. These skills are used to continually research and improve the effectiveness of our bird and bat homes. The team

work closely with architects, developers, ecologists and planners to resolve individual questions and provide advice on both wildlife and construction issues.

Polarwall Insulating Concrete FormworkPolarwall have recently launched a new Offsite Construction system utilising the concept of Flying Factories.

Large panels (2.5m x up to 3m high) of the Polarwall Insulating Concrete Formwork are assembled either offsite or in a temporary assembly facility which can be allocated near to or at the site.

If there is a crane on site then the panels can be ‘gang formed’ together in lengths of up to 12.5 metres and lifted into location.

Reinforcement can be incorporated into the panel assembly making it ideal for basement construction and retaining walls.

A new internal walling system from Polarwall is also being used. This uses cement fibreboard panels as permanent shuttering

and will create a wall which is virtually finished.

A new site has opened in Slough where this revolutionary build method is being showcased to interested parties.

As part of the Flying Factory concept this project will have its own concrete batching facility on site for filling the assembled Polarwall formwork and for the floors.

The site will be having open days for interested parties who should in the first instance contact Polarwall: +44 (0)1392 823300 or visit: www.polarwall.co.uk to arrange.

New LED Module CLE Quadrant G2 ADVANCED

▲ A new generation for greater flexibility in round Ceiling & Pendant Luminairies

▲ Ideal for Retail and Hospitality Applications

Tridonic’s new generation of LED modules CLE Quadrant G2 ADVANCED now offer even greater flexibility for luminaire manufacturers for round ceiling and pendant luminaries. High efficiency and a high luminous flux are now not just available optionally but can be combined in a single module. Matt Caygill, UK & Nordic Region Business Development Manager for Tridonic explains more about the options available, “There are three new sizes available with diameters of 522mm, 802mm and 1,082mm so that very large luminaires can now be fitted with the modules. One module consists of four segments that can be combined at random and extended with additional ring segments for extra-large luminaires. The 2nd generation modules need no lenses, but nevertheless ensure a homogeneous illumination of the relevant luminaire with no shadow effects through the close-fit arrangement of numerous LEDs. This allows the realisation of very flat luminaire designs with a high homogeneity.”

A classic piece of nautical design. The masthead light was originally designed for use on vessels where its teardrop shape ensured that ropes or lines could not get caught or snag on the fitting. The ‘wall washing’ nature of the light output means that the masthead light makes for an excellent feature or exterior light.

This model features a GU10 lamp holder and is supplied as standard with a 7 Watt warm white LED lamp (240V). The fitting is available in a number of finishes to suit a wide variety of applications. All finishes will be available from November 2015.

Marina makeover

The benefits of a commercial door and curtain walling system from Jack Aluminium have been recognised after it was specified for an award-winning leisure complex in Derbyshire.

The £1.7 million development at Mercia Marina, near Willington, has transformed the popular venue with the addition of the Boardwalk, a promenade comprising boutique retailers and a bar/restaurant. The project has been the recipient of both regional and national awards from the LABC Building Excellence Awards.

Jack Aluminium’s customer, Logic Aluminium, a specialist in the design, manufacture and installation of commercial aluminium solutions, was hired to provide commercial doors and curtain walling for the Boardwalk.

Jack Aluminium worked closely with Logic to tailor its offering to suit the specific environment at Mercia Marina during the construction phase in 2014. The Jack Door TD68 was designed to reduce fabrication time and wastage, while being thermally efficient.

30 Winning Years

The company, which has been a customer of The VEKA UK Group's Halo brand for the last 17 years, fabricated more than 18,000 window and door units in 2015 – a huge leap from the 1,500 it produced in 1986; its first year of trading.

Director, Malcolm Cake commented, “A lot has changed for Window Warehouse over the past 30 years. We started out in a single, 1,500 square feet unit, growing to take on an additional seven units – each dedicated to a different product – today boasting a combined footprint of over 30,000 square feet.

“What has guaranteed our success and longevity is the way we constantly strive to improve our product offering for customers. The switch to Halo has paid dividends from day one, as the brand's position in The VEKA UK Group keeps us consistently at the forefront of industry trends and technical advancements.

“From its comprehensive range of colour options to the FlushSash window suite – perfect for period properties and buildings in strictly governed conservation areas – we found our ideal systems supplier in Halo. In fact, back in 2008, we were the first of The VEKA UK Group fabricators to manufacture a PVC-U bi-folding door, designed and tested with VEKA and Halo's support; an indication of just how forward thinking our two organisations are!”

Glass & Glazing supply chain ‘must do more’Fabricators, installers and manufacturers across the glass and glazing supply chain must do more to promote the benefits of high-performance products to homeowners if they are to secure the future growth of the industry, according to a new report published by Pilkington UK.

Mark Catchpole, Sales Director at SWC Trade Frames, said, “Product development and innovation is happening rapidly, and the energy performance that windows can deliver is getting better. However, what doesn’t seem to be happening is these products filtering into the market with any speed, and this is a major point to address.”

Elsewhere in the report, Veka cites standard frame sizes as an obstacle preventing the widespread adoption of triple-glazing in the UK, as Managing Director Dave Jones said,

“The hesitance of the UK market to adopt triple-glazing is due in large part to the fact that 70mm frames are still the standard offering here, while the continent moved to 82mm+ systems as standard long ago.”

Despite these challenges, those in the supply

chain recognise a number of opportunities, including an increasing demand for products with a premium appearance. For instance, the growing demand for a wider range of colours has the potential to create new revenue streams for the industry.

John Spiby, National Sales Manager, domestic products, Pilkington UK, says, “Although the latest Palmer Market Research report predicts some growth in demand, there are clear challenges facing the industry.

“However, it’s not all doom and gloom. While demand from existing housing stock looks set to continue at a slow pace, it’s clear that the sector is going through a period of change, and while there are challenges to navigate, the opportunities for growth are promising.”

Quickslide’s WarmCore ‘warm aluminium’ FS doorSynseal’s new WarmCore Folding Sliding Door System is promised as the ideal balance between the linear rigidity and strength offered by aluminium profiles and with the exceptional thermal performance offered by PVC-U.

WarmCore is a ‘warm aluminium’ system in which the polyamide core usually used as a thermal break in aluminium profiles is replaced by a PVC-U section. The result is unrivalled thermal performance amongst such products with U-values as low as 1.4

Upgrade projectWrightstyle, the UK steel and aluminium glazing company, has completed a major upgrading project at Cardiff Central Station for Network Rail Wales. The completion follows a similar project at Cardiff Queen Street station, in a major programme that Network Rail describes as the largest ever rail enhancement scheme in Wales.

The overall project, working with BAM Construction, is part of the Cardiff Stations Enhancement Scheme, and which saw Wrightstyle supply some 300m2 of Schueco’s FW60XR enhanced curtain wall system, along with doors, windows and automated sliding entrance doors.

Cardiff Central Station currently handles 13 million passengers a year, but by 2043 this is projected to reach 32 million, a rise of 144%.

The Cardiff contract further extended Wrightstyle’s commercial relationship with Network Rail for whom it has supplied systems for several stations, most notably for the refurbishment of London’s King Cross.

“At Wrightstyle, we have long experience in both rail and airport projects,” said Tim Kempster, Wrightstyle’s Managing Director. “Our comprehensive range of advanced doors, internal screens and external glazing systems are designed to contain fire, smoke and toxic gases for up to two hours, and have been successfully tested against both ballistic and bomb attack.”

Largest Truck Mount in Wilson Access Fleet helps to tackle Millennium Stadium rebrandingWilson Access called upon the largest truck mount in its fleet to help contractors rebrand the former Millennium Stadium in Cardiff – the home of Welsh rugby.

The 57m Palfinger P570 hired by John Anthony Signs is a new addition to the Wilson Access fleet and is one of only a few available in the UK. A second Palfinger P570 will be joining the Wilson Access fleet in the coming months.

The 74,500 capacity Millennium Stadium is now known as the Principality Stadium following a sponsorship deal between the stadium and the Principality Building Society.

To reflect the name change, John Anthony Signs manufactured 26 illuminated letters 2.3 metre high spelling out the stadium’s new

name and installed them 40 metres up on the exterior of the stadium. As well as the 57m Palfinger, John Anthony Signs also hired a 45m Wumag WT450, together with two truck mount operators over seven days to install the new signage.

The Palfinger P570 has a 41m horizontal outreach and also features Palfinger’s new x-jib feature that enables the platform to go up and over buildings, so that an operator can work on a rear fascia of a building whilst the vehicle is parked at the front.

University of Wolverhampton transforms Workforce efficiency and Performance ManagementThe University of Wolverhampton has adopted an advanced employee scheduling and remote workforce management solution to gain effective visibility and control across its campus operations and estate management. Skillweb’s SmartTask is being used across the University’s reception desk, security, caretaking and cleaning teams to provide rota planning, proof of attendance, performance reporting and electronic auditing. As a result, the software system is helping performance manage staff and improve employee accountability across three main campus sites.

The University initially selected SmartTask to overcome the scheduling difficulties it faced for

its communications rota, which had been expanded to incorporate five reception desks, four of which were new, and a central switch room. The staff planning of employees had to factor in a wide range of working constraints including Morning or Afternoon shifts only, split weeks and restrictions based on health reasons. With such complex parameters, it quickly

became clear that it was not possible to schedule the team using a paper-based, manual process.

While trialling SmartTask, it quickly became clear that the system could support a wide range of applications across the University’s campus operations and estate management. Taking advantage of the flexibility of the system, the University has been able to implement a phased roll-out to caretaking, security and cleaning teams in-line with resource, time and funding availability within the central facilities team.

The first choice for professionals

The response we received at the kbb show was tremendous!

We have been inundated with enquiries and are busy setting up a network of kitchen showrooms in key areas, where the recent floods have hit hardest.

With the recent increase of flooding nationwide, we believe our range of water resistant cabinets is the answer for customers who are planning for the future.

One of the most important things that came out of talking to visitors at the show was the wealth of ideas for other applications for our innovative new product. Outdoor Kitchens and Bars, Care Homes and Student Accommodation, Swimming Pool Lockers and Saunas as well as Water Proof Sink Units for every new kitchen.

Our latest news is that after extensive testing we are now able to offer sculpted door fronts as an

option on our Flood Proof Kitchens, so if your clients are looking to match some existing cabinets that survived the flood or just prefer the more traditional look, we can now offer that option.

Our Sculpted doors are made to order and hand painted to the customers exacting requirements.

POLIGRAT has been duly selected as our reputable Surface Finish Specialist of the Month, we are pleased to announce here at Building and Facilities News, the publication focused on promoting businesses of great value within the construction and facilities management sectors.

With roots dating back to 1952 (when the company was officially established by Mr. Erich Stoeckl), POLIGRAT is a long established surface technology provider with decades of refined industry experience. Continued success has enabled the enterprise to grow significantly, acquiring a nationwide presence with its headquarters in Munich and additional sites in Germany, France, Hungary and the UK.

The organisation focuses on the development of processes and products for the treatment of different metal surfaces; namely materials such as aluminium, stainless steel, cobalt alloys, carbon steel, copper, copper alloys, magnesium, nickel, nickel alloys, rare metals, titanium, zinc and zirconium.

“Our processes produce smooth and attractive long lasting finishes and colours (gloss or matt),” detailed Siegfried Pießlinger-Schweiger, Managing Director at POLIGRAT. “In addition they are easy to clean, anti-fingerprint, high corrosion resistant, UV-resistant, food safe, repeatable and not combustible, so they come with a whole host of benefits.

“We don’t have much competition in most of our markets; therefore we hold a preferential position as one of the foremost international leaders in technology for this particular industry (surface treatment). In general we have customers in all areas with high demand for surface quality and performance – and it is within this field that we can provide added value for various organisations.”

Offering finishes for decorative, functional and burr-free surfaces, POLIGRAT’s practices involve electro-polishing, chemical polishing, deburring, pickling

and passivating. It’s most recent treatment method, however, revolves around the utilisation of sol-gel coatings (glass) which are transparent and colour protective on stainless steel, aluminium and zinc.

These relatively new products, named POLISEAL and VEROPRECTRAL, have already made a positive impression on customers, as Siegfried told us, “We have found there is a very high interest for these specially developed sol-gel coatings. Their superior properties ensure they have a central place in architecture (outside and interior), although they are

also predominantly asked for in sanitary & kitchen equipment, furniture, cabinets of machinery and the automotive sector.”

POLISEAL and VEROSPECTRAL – readily available for purchase this month – were stringently made at the company’s technical application centre as a contemporary way to improve upon surface metal handling. July marks the launch of these particular innovations, as the new production line for Frankfurt will begin at this time, with the offering reaching maximum sizes of 6.0 x 2.0 metre sheets and panels.

POLIGRAT also offers cleaning, de-rouging, colouring/anodising and coating services, whilst the business itself operates via the following designated divisions: engineering & development, installation (plants & equipment), chemicals and subcontract work.

If you would like any more information about these tried and trusted services and products then please don’t hesitate to contact the team today – a friendly representative will be more than happy to discuss how these solutions can improve profitability, safety and productivity at your workplace.

Washrooms fit for a kingPropelair, the UK toilet manufacturer that has introduced a toilet flushing system using air and only 1.5 litres of water, is celebrating the start of its third year with a string of major installations and a busy order book for 2016. The technology has already been adopted by a number of local authorities, colleges and universities and other public buildings. The Lyceum Theatre in London – now showing The Lion King - is one of the most recent leisure venues to install the new flush technology.

The Propelair system operates using displaced air and a fraction of the water used by most conventional toilets which in the UK average 9 litres per flush. It eliminates bacteria spreading

around the washroom when flushing and provides the most hygienic and effective toilet flush available anywhere in the world.

Workplace washrooms can consume up to 90% of the water used in commercial buildings. Propelair cuts usage on each flush by an average of 84%. For leak proof operation,

water is delivered through a siphon.

Less energy is required for water and waste processing, so the toilet’s carbon footprint is reduced by approximately 80%. Flushing takes 3 seconds and the toilet is ready to re-flush in 20 seconds – not the normal 2-3 minutes.

Propelair is the forward-thinking, caring person’s toilet. It greatly reduces use of energy, minimises maintenance, slashes water and sewage bills, provides staff with toilets that eliminate the spread of airborne bacteria and shows the world that you are a caring organisation.

Sikafloor makes the Grade at Welsh Bottle PlantFor a new production Line Floor at a Bottling Plant in Wales, a Specialist Floor Surface System from Sika has delivered long term performance and excellent durability whilst meeting the demanding Hygiene Regulations within the Food and Drink industry.

The Radnor Hills Mineral Water Company in Knighton produces more than 175 million bottles each year. For a new bottling line, the floor surface had to meet industry standards, withstand heavy machinery and be easy to clean. Appointed to complete the application within the limited timeframe, specialist contractor Coatech turned to Sika and the company’s Sikafloor PurCem polyurethane resin system – a market proven high strength screed.

Following the re-screeding and sloping of an old warehouse floor to ease cleaning and drainage, Coatech diamond ground the screed to provide an effective key for the application of 100m2 of Sikafloor Purcem 20 which was laid to a depth of 9mm.

Offering excellent strength, Sikafloor 20N Purcem is a polyurethane modified cement screed that is highly resistant to chemicals, fatty acids and temperature. As the water-based system normally requires no primer, its installation is considerably less complex than many other systems, producing a joint-free surface that is slip and abrasion resistant.

Sika’s range of flooring systems for food and beverage production areas meets and exceeds client expectations, industry best practices and building regulations and legislation. All Sika flooring specifications are available via NBS+ and are supported with comprehensive technical support.

Building and Facilities News is extremely pleased to present EGGER UK as its selected Wood Panel Solutions Company of the Month.

From trend-setting materials for furniture to interior design and environmentally friendly wood construction materials to high quality laminate flooring – EGGER UK manufactures the right products for the job.

EGGER UK is part of the EGGER Group, one of the leading manufacturers of wood based panels in Europe. They are a family-run company established in 1961 with 17 production plants across Europe of which 2 are situated in the UK.

With three main divisions including EDP – EGGER Decorative Products, EBP – EGGER Building Products and ERP - EGGER Retail Products, EGGER UK has recently seen an exciting period of growth, having benefited from one of the largest business investments in the North East.

“Our values are dynamism, loyalty, trust and the preservation of a pioneering spirit as a family company,” says Dan Soulsby, Category Manager (Building) at EGGER UK Ltd.

“We achieve sustainable international growth based on our own performance and by preserving our independence. We continually seek to invest in our

manufacturing facilities and product development to make sure we provide our customers with innovative solutions and market-oriented products and services based around a natural and renewable material – wood.”

Satisfying the needs of builder’s merchants and housebuilders as well the construction market, EGGER Building Products is home to some of the most advanced products and systems in the market.

This includes EGGER’s innovative range of structural T&G chipboard flooring panels compromising of P5 raw boards, Peel Clean boards and the market leading EGGER Protect board. As well as this, the company offers OSB3 and OSB4 panels and the new OSB HDX board for use on mezzanine and industrial flooring projects.

To compliment the range, the company recently developed EGGER D4 Joint & Joist Adhesive to install its chipboard flooring products which eliminates squeaks associated with fully nailed floors and is up to five times stronger than a mechanical fixing.

Using EGGER boards (P5, Peel Clean Xtra and Protect) with EGGER D4 Joint & Joist Adhesive and fitting them in accordance with EGGER’s recommendations is the unique and ground breaking EGGER Advanced Structural Flooring System – the only one of its kind in the market.

The EGGER Advanced System is backed by the company’s lifetime guarantee and is designed to give installers added peace of mind on every floor they lay.

The specialist boards are produced on EGGER’s state-of-the art continuous chipboard line at Hexham in Northumberland. As one of the most technically

advanced production plants in Europe, the facility has been subject to investments reaching over £250 million since 2007.

This allows EGGER to consistently produce high quality boards which run through its T&G lines using diamond tip profiling tools for the tongue and groove to create stronger and tighter fitting joints on every board produced.

“We are the only manufacturer who uses this technology,” explains Dan, “EGGER is proud to be an industry-leading provider of commercial and domestic structural flooring applications.

“We strive to give our customers innovative solutions, exceptional product quality, value for money and complete peace of mind on every EGGER floor they lay. No other engineered flooring chipboards provide the

same outstanding protection and structural properties or offer installers so many laying and fixing benefits.

“We are currently investing in a new T&G line at Hexham with additional processing facilities planned for later this year. We want to further secure our position in the UK construction market and provide security of supply to our customers for many years to come, at a time when housebuilding needs to grow.”

“Our on-going investment in existing plants and both new and existing products lets customers know they are being supplied with the best quality products manufactured in the most technologically sophisticated T&G facilities in Europe and reaffirms our commitment to the market,” he concluded. “It also provides them with security and peace of mind that we are here for the long term.

“We plan to further secure our position and increase our output, continuing to remain a trusted supplier for the construction market by replacing and updating systems as and when required. Our aim is to ensure we continue to be innovative and market leaders in all areas we supply.”

Interior Design Company of the Month

Wood Product Solutions Company of the Month

Design for SoundMonitor Audio Ltd has been selected as our greatly deserved Interior Design Company of the Month, we are pleased to inform our readers here at Building and Facilities News.

The globally renowned specialist was established in 1972 in Cambridge primarily as a designer and producer of traditional hi-fi loudspeakers. Over 40 years in the trade has enabled the team to progressively strengthen its skillset and diversify into the custom installation arena of the industry.

Alex Emson, Director of Global Sales and Marketing at Monitor Audio, told us more, “We are primarily known for the provision of our traditional hi-fi loudspeakers, but over the last 10 years we have focused heavily on growing our custom installation portfolio (this includes the development of discreet subwoofers, and architectural solution

such as our soundframe wall canvases).

“Standing out from our competitors is made possible because of our experience and skills in designing both traditional and custom install speakers. This ensures we can cater to the needs of anyone looking for a good quality sound system. Our main aim is to find the best way to reflect a consumer or artist’s desire through the effective utilisation of our acoustic talents.”

Now operating from its distribution hub, design department and sales office in Rayleigh, Essex, Monitor Audio incorporates stereo and surround sound systems as well as an array of sonically matched architectural speakers for interior and exterior use.

Merging style, quality, performance and sophistication,

the privately owned English company boasts a world-class suite of solutions from traditional offerings, to lifestyle. These include: Platinum, Gold, Silver, Bronze, Apex, Radius, MASS, Climate (Outdoor) and the Ci Series.

Other products available include the, Soundbars (ASB-2, SB-2 and SB-3), and a compact Bluetooth

system, the S150, delivering great sound, in an all in one designer product.

Covering applications such as floorstanders, bookshelves, walls, in-ceiling, centre channel, outdoor and subwoofers, Monitor Audio’s products are made using a high performance metal alloy for aesthetic appeal and lifelike sound reproduction. Despite its lightness, this particular material has great rigidity, and the proprietary C-CAM® drivers can be made much smaller than conventional designs to fit easily into more restricted spaces.

When asked about the organisation’s plans for the future, Alex concluded, “Going forward we are aiming to advance further in regards to the custom installation side of the business. We are looking to find new customers in the design construction sector with the alignment of an appropriate product mix. However, we are also running a programme overseeing the replenishment of our traditional ranges.

“We have several new product lines under development; a voltage garden system, in-ceiling speakers and an all-weather custom speaker (suitable for the marine industry due to its waterproof quality), which we are looking forward to releasing in due course. Overall we want to maintain our reputation for design excellency (courtesy of our strong heritage) whilst helping our customers to find the most suitable solution for their décor and lifestyle.”
