A sincere thanks to everyone for an outstanding installation night for Lady Cheryl and I, as well as all who were installed, Divan, Trustees, and appointed Divan. A special thanks to all who helped to make this a memorable evening; the Ritualistic Divan, The Chanters, The Keystone Kops, and the Greeters. To PP Jim Hirl for the wonderful food, Angie Huebner and Noe Lo for the decorations and transforming the downstairs into something special. To Brad Graham and all the Aides for setting up the room. And thanks to Illustrious sirs Jim Parks, Tom Brummett and Frank Kroupa, for taking time out of their busy lives to officiate the Installation, a great job as always. This was a special night that we will remember always.

February is normally circus month but due to the pandemic the circus has been postponed to February of 2022.

Grand Lodge will be held February 4th-6th in Kearney, NE.The March Stated meeting will be moved to March 4th due to the

CSSA Midwinter Meeting being March 11th thru the 13th in Oklahoma City.

We have other events coming soon, the first being our annual Corned Beef and Cabbage on March 17th. The guys are already working toward making a delicious feast.

Something new in 2021, from the urging of Imperial in Tampa, we will be having 4 meetings that all the ladies will be invited to. The months will be Feb, May, Jul, and Oct. These will be held after the dinner on Stated Meeting nights. A very short-tiled meeting will be held at 6pm on those evenings for any Shrine business that needs to be conducted. At the combined meetings we will have speakers, awards and presentations and a few fun items. These meetings are being held to help keep the ladies informed of the hospitals, Tangier projects, membership, and allow the ladies to see awards that are presented as well as any other presentations. At the February meeting we will have as our guest, Imperial Treasurer Brad Koehn.

Tangier is starting two new clubs. The first a chef’s or cooking club for all that wish to learn about cooking for banquets or gourmet cooking. The first meeting was Jan 22nd. But if anyone missed that date and is interested you may show up at future meetings. I know there is much planned going forward with visits and exhibitions by local chefs.

The second new club is a Shooting Club. When we ran the survey a year ago, there were over 40 likes. As the club gets going, they can address what areas of shooting they wish to pursue, handgun, long range rifle shooting, trap, sporting clays, combat shooting or all. The first meeting is Feb 12 at 6pm at Tangier.

Tangier is open and safe, and the Divan urges all Units and Clubs to start or continue to have your meetings at the Center.

We will continue to have half priced drinks on Saturdays from 4pm to 7pm through Feb 13th, so stop in see your friends and have a beverage.

Also, for a special treat on Fri, Feb 19th from 5pm until 7pm, we are having a Meatball Sandwich night, consisting of a meatball sandwich, bag of chips, and a beverage, tap beer or soda for $1.00. Any Noble that brings a prospective member, the Noble as well as his guest, will receive their dinner free! We only have a limited number of meals, about 150, so come early before we run out. Dine in only, no carryout.

All Units and Clubs, if you have not already started, please get your monthly newsletters into Sandy.

Happy Valentine’s Day to all.It is a great pleasure to serve as your 2021 Potentate. Thanks for everything that each of you do to make Tangier a better

    TANGIER “HOT SANDS”TANGIER “HOT SANDS”FEBRUARY 2021FEBRUARY 2021

    Arab PatrolBy: Steve Bugajny

Greetings to all and Happy Valentines day! We made it to February and by God I see a bit of light at the end of this exceedingly long tunnel.

Finally we are seeing more folks come out cautiously and, actually I hear of at least two new clubs starting up for us to enjoy.

I know spring is coming because I have been seeing seed catalogues in my mailbox plenty.

With our new slate of duly sworn-in officers of the Divan we are on our way to make 2021 a good year. I believe much is asked of our leadership , and unless you have served in such a capacity, you just don’t realize all the work and effort that goes into fulfilling these positions. A sincere thank you in advance. Let’s support our Divan.

Arab Patrol continues, like many clubs and units, to move on albeit slowly and with obvious care. We are meeting on the second Monday of the month and are already planning our Wine Taste at the Shrine Center for 2021. Details as we get them ironed out.

We will see if we can come up with some more ideas for gathering and possibly raising money. Again, a careful approach, but we cannot just curl up and molt. We are social people who need contact with others and I believe it will get better and better.

Enjoy the Sweetheart month and be kind and generous to your honey.

Best healthy wishes to all. See you at the Center. Peace.

    Director’s StaffBy: Mel Morton

Happy New Year and congratulations to our newly elected Divan. We know with all of your experience, you will lead our Temple well.

Last year was a year we would all like to put behind us and forget. With the new vaccines becoming available, we are looking forward to getting back involved with full force and full steam ahead. I’m sure we will be meeting soon.

With the Circus canceled, we need to rally behind the Divan and make the rest of the fundraisers the best that has ever been. We can’t make up for last year but we can press forward and try hard to help out for a successful year.

Don’t forget last year’s Imperial Potentate Sir Jeffrey Sowder’s program called “Just One”. If everyone brings in “Just One” new member our membership will grow leaps and bounds. How many of our Shriners have brought in “Just One” good quality noble this past year?

If you are interested in seeing what the Directors Staff is about, contact any of our members or come to one of our meetings. We meet on the fourth Monday of every month in the lower level of the shrine at 7:00 pm. Our ladies meet at the same time. Support the other clubs and units, your blue lodge, and other Masonic organizations.

As always remember it’s a great day to be a Tangier Shriner.

    ChantersBy: Bernie Hauber

Here we are in the second month of a new year. Last month, nobles Kevin Throckmorton and Joe Riddle were installed as Captain and Lieutenant of the Chanters, respectively. The Chanters performed at the installation of the Tangier Shrine Divan on January 8, 2021. We hope we made a good impression on all the nobles and ladies present at this event.

In a continuation of the tradition, I would like to introduce you to our Lieutenant, Noble Joe Riddle. He worked for the Rock Island, then the Chicago & North Western and then the Union Pacific (UP) Railroads starting in 1973. He retired in 2006 from the UP as a crew dispatcher. Joe was a member of the Illinois Air National Guard for over 26 years as a member of the 566 Air Force Band. He has been a Master Mason for over 42 years. Joe was raised in Boulevard Lodge No. 882 AF&AM (now Lawn Lodge No 815 AF&AM in Oak Lawn, IL) and was Master in 1984 and 1987. He is a dual member of Coral Lodge No. 430 AF&AM in Carson, IA, and has been Secretary since 1996. Joe belongs to the Oak Lawn, IL York Rite Bodies, Omaha Valley of the Scottish Rite, and also belongs to Amber Star Chapter OES, Quick, IA, and Harmony Chapter OES, Council Bluffs, IA. He belongs to Friendship Court, Order of the Amaranth, Oak Lawn, IL and Hope Shrine No 106, White Shrine of Jerusalem (WSJ), Illinois and Harmony Council Shrine WSJ, Council Bluffs, IA. In 2015, Joe was elected and installed as a Trustee for the Supreme White Shrine of Jerusalem, and he still serves in that position today. He joined the Chanters as a top tenor in 2009, and has been a valued member ever since. We Chanters are thankful for his tenor voice and his leadership.

The Chanters are disappointed that the 2021 Tangier Shrine Circus had to be canceled due to the pandemic. For the same reason, most practices had to be canceled. Although some Chanters themselves are in a high risk category for Covid-19, your requests, if you want us to sing at any events, should be received early to verify our availability and comply with any continued Covid-19 restrictions. Any man with a joy for singing and an interest in joining us should contact any Chanter or just leave a message at the Shrine Center. That’s my update for February.

“A song will outlive all sermons in the memory.” Henry Giles (Unitarian Minister)

    By: Steve Kohler President

Here we are with one month of 2021 in the rearview mirror. Not much has changed with still no activities. Usually, at this time of year we are all geared up for the Circus. Not this year! The Circus will go on in 2022.

I am very fortunate to have a great line of officers to work with this year. Vice President - Ed Ticknor, Secretary - Ron Niederhaus and Treasurer - Gary Shepherd. We are all very thankful for Gary’s recovery.

I hope everyone is making good progress wrenching on and polishing their vehicles. We do have our annual vehicle inspection/picnic planned for this year. It will be at the new Victory Lane in Elkhorn, Nebraska. This will take place sometime in April. Thanks to our new secretary Ron Niederhaus for making this happen. Details will be coming soon.

I know we were all looking forward to getting out and doing what we do. I hope you and your family are staying safe and well.

Vintage IronKeystone KopsBy: Bob Duff, Captain

Congratulations to Potentate Steve Elliott and Lady Cheryl as well as all the Elected Divan. We are looking forward to a wonderful year!

Normally this time of year we would be preparing for the Circus, but since it has been canceled for 2021, we are looking forward to other events that CDC protocol will allow. Please check out your monthly Hot Sands for upcoming events.

We would like to take this opportunity to recognize all Nobles and Ladies who have birthdays and/or anniversaries this year - have a wonderful one!

Please note that soup on Tuesdays is back in the lounge! Looking forward to Hamburger Night returning as it’s an opportunity to see fellow Shriners we haven’t seen for awhile.

See you at the Keystone Kops meeting scheduled for the second Friday of the month.

    Be well and safe!

    Tangier BandBy: Jim (Rad) Radosevich

To dispel a rumor that has gone virile: “The Most Famous Tangier Band will NOT be providing entertainment for Super Bowl LV (SB LV) this month.” The Band Secretary mistakenly assumed a written phone message was for a SB LV halftime gig in Florida. Alas, after many phone calls, it was discovered that the request was for a Swing Band in La Vista during halftime.

Late New Year’s Resolution for Musicians (and Chanters): Don’t sing in the shower! Singing leads to dancing, dancing leads to slipping, and slipping leads to the Paramedics seeing you naked. So remember…Don’t sing in the shower!

    By: Jim Huebner

Hello Tangier Nobles and Ladies,Below are the December totals and

yearly totals for 2020. The pandemic played havoc with patient appointments and to some degree Tangier’s ability to provide drivers, but I’m proud of how the Roadrunners as a group were still able to assist our patients. So proud of our drivers for stepping up. Please thank them for their dedication, they’re most worthy of representing the best of Shriner ideals.

The new year is already off to a fast start as far as patient appointment scheduling, let’s hope for a safer 2021. Please nobles, consider becoming a Roadrunner for Tangier and assisting our patients in the hospital system. Many of our drivers have served many years and due to advancing age, concern for Covid, and wanting to spend more time for personal matters (travel, relaxation, etc) they’re no longer able to keep hitting the road. Please contact me in the hospital office for more information.

Greetings from the Shrine Bowl Unit. Our new Commander Bruce Arp led our first meeting of the year on January 12th and did a terrific job.

A quick welcome to Gary Unger as a petition for him to join the unit was unanimously accepted. Plans are being made to hold our Big Red Dinners next fall and thanks again to Dean Abels for taking the leadership on this committee. We will have a final decision on the Fish Fry by March 1st if we can hold it or not. It’s currently scheduled for Friday April 2nd and hopefully conditions have changed by then for us to hold it like normal. More to follow next month.

Our annual Valentine’s Dinner will be held on February 9th at Oak Hills Country Club with drinks starting at 6:00 pm. This will also be in place of our monthly unit meeting.

That’s all for now and I hope to see you at the Valentine’s Dinner. Stay healthy and safe.

    Mobile NoblesBy: Jeff Blocklinger

As busy as January was with installations, the Mobile Nobles have no time to slow down as we prepare for our annual 357 fundraiser. With the way last year has gone we were forced to come up with a new way of going about doing it. We have made some new changes this year that we feel could be for the better, but we are going to take this year as a test run and ask how everybody you like to proceed in the future years.

This year we are going to take the cautious route and skip the dinner that goes along with the fundraiser. Instead, we are going to change to just a raffle with keeping the $10,000 grand prize and ten other raffles ranging from $5,000 to $125. To keep inline with the cautious route, we are going to be streaming the raffle on Facebook on March13 th at 7:00 pm. That way everyone can watch and see if they are one of the lucky winners. As in years before, if someone would like to give up their ticket this year, we cannot guarantee that they will receive a ticket or the same number in the following years. Luckily, for everyone else we are starting up a waiting list for when tickets become available and that is being managed by our Treasurer Dan Waldron. If you would like to be added to the waiting list please contact Dan at 402-249-4493.

We would like to thank everyone for their continued support. Without you we couldn’t keep up with the maintenance and the improvements we have been making. Especially to the Club Car which has recently got a new paint job, new carpet, and a new decking on the back. Hope to see you down the tracks during parade season to check out the improvements in person.

“What thrills me about trains is not their size or their equipment but the fact that they are moving, that they embody a connection between unseen places.” - Marianne Wiggins

By: Roxanne Mrasek, QueenAs I read everyone’s New

Year’s greetings, I am so heartened to see how good this year has been for so many people - more family time, learning new techniques to stay in touch, crafts learned or relearned, new skills learned, projects completed. It was good for Heather’s Nile Smiles, too.

When I think back on what I had planned for my year… On installation practice night it started, or maybe I should say it started over!

One of my major goals was to make sure we brought in more funds than we sent out. I think the fundraisers planned would have been fun and fruitful, and maybe we can still do them sometime. But what really happened was you wonderful ladies stepped up with new and wonderful fundraisers that (I think) will cover the expenses that went out. Thank you!

I hope we were able to do an obligation only initiation on February 6. I really don’t want to be the first queen with no new members!

Since this will be my last Hot Sands, I want to thank my officers for agreeing to be on the floor this year. Even though you didn’t get to show off your memorization at every meeting, you were always there giving me moral support. I want you all to know how honored I feel to have been your Queen. While not what I had hoped, still a pleasure.

And for your final Smile: Water is heavier than butane. Butane is lighter fluid.

    Hospital FloatBy: Mike Donham

Here it is February and Tangier is normally getting ready for the Circus but sadly due to the pandemic it has been canceled and rescheduled for 2022. Many things have changed this past year and many activities have been canceled. We certainly hope the vaccine will enable our activities to return to “normal” soon.

The Hospital Float was able to have their main fundraiser, the Christmas Greens sales and it was successful. We give a huge thank you to those individuals who supported this project.

During this time of distancing, etc, the Hospital Float has curtailed the monthly meetings. As the situation improves, we will resume the meetings.

Float members celebrating birthdays in February are Nobles Stan Hale and Mike Donham and Lady Martha Sherman.

Noble Ken and Lady Cindy Nisley and Noble Tim and Lady Laura Mendoza will celebrate February anniversaries.

Float members, if you have not paid your dues, please contact Noble Ken Nisley.

MOBILE NOBLES 357 RAFFLE FOR 2021

First and foremost, the Tangier Mobile Nobles would like to thank all of you for supporting us in the past and especially last year and this year during the pandemic. We have been forced to come up with an alternative way of doing our 357 dinner/raffle fundraiser this year. We have decided to keep the same ticket price and we will be having more opportunities to win money. See the list of prizes below. The winners will be drawn on Saturday, March 13, 7:00 P.M. We will stream the drawing of the winners on Facebook.

For our past supporters, you should have received your ticket or tickets in the mail by now. We are asking you to do the survey on the ticket stub to let us know how you would like to see our fundraiser continued in the coming years. There are 2 boxes, one for “Raffle” and one for “Dinner”. If you would like to go back to the 357 Dinner, mark the “Dinner” box. If you would like to see more prize money given away like this year, mark the “Raffle” box.

We welcome any suggestions from our supporters as to what you would like to see us do in the future! We have entertained the idea of doing the Raffle Party at Tangier and possibly having a Taco Bar or a Nacho Bar instead of the Prime Rib Dinner for 2. That would allow us to continue giving away more prize money.

We appreciate all your support to help us keep “ole” 357 running! Thank you from all the Mobile Nobles!!

If you have any questions or you would like to have your name put on the wait list for the next available ticket, please call Dan Waldron at 402-249-4493. Looking forward to hearing from you.

“Let Us Show You How Home Remodeling is Supposed To Be”

Chad and Kory grew up Elkhorn in the 80’s riding big wheels together. Now they have traded in their big wheels for Black Carp’s Trucks and remodeling homes in the Omaha Metro Area.

Keeping homeowners happy, comfortable, and informed is an integral part of our business practices. We are a locally homegrown business that will be here for you when you need us and make your remodeling experience an enjoyable and affordable one that you will be able to enjoy for years to come. With Carp’s you get the advantages of a large one-stop shop with the customer service you might find at a smaller company. We started with one man and an idea of how, to do things the right way the first time around.

Our customers contact us when they want to deal with one company that can take care of all of their service and project needs.

We don’t profit by overcharging and getting cheap labor and moving on to the next project. We believe that it is vital to have homeowners involved in every step of the process.
