WHERE DOES HALLOWEEN COME FROM? We celebrate Halloween every year on October 31st but where does the holiday come from? The holiday originally came from the Celts who lived in Britain more than 2000 years ago. November 1st is the Celtic feast of “Samhain” old Irish for "Summer's end," and it was the most important of the ancient Celtic feasts. They had bonfires and made sacrifices and they usually celebrated on the evening of October 31st and the day of November 1st.
What happened after the arrival of Christianity? After the arrival of Christianity, this day became All Saints Day. Another name for it is All Hallow’s Day and the day before, October 31st, is called All Hallow’s Eve, or Halloween for short. Why did the Celts dress in costumes? On this day, the people believed that the spirits of the dead came to visit them so they dressed up as ghosts so any evil spirits would not harm them.
Jack O’Lanterns The Irish brought the tradition of carving pumpkins into Jack O'Lantern to America. But, the original Jack O'Lantern was not a pumpkin. Pumpkins did not exist in Ireland. Ancient Celtic cultures in Ireland carved turnips on All Hallow's Eve, and placed an ember in them, to ward off evil spirits.
