Hello Buzzworthy readers!

I can’t believe Halloween’s already here! It means my last semester on the board is already more than halfway over, which means my posi-tion will be open. If anyone is interested in interviewing for a chance to be a Public Relations Director, sign-ups wll be posted early next month! It’s a wonderful opportunity to be part of this amazing station and work with a talented group of writ-ers.

And, as always, I hope you enjoy this Halloween-themed issue of the Buzzworthy!

Haley Schrenk

Happy Halloween, Bonnies! We have had a great start to the semester. It’s crazy to believe we are almost approaching the end. We have had a lot of fun and spooky happenings here at the station. Catalina Richsen, an indie artist from Connecticut, visited us on Oct. 21. Liam McGurl and myself interviewed her, and then she sang three songs on air. Rich-sen sang two originals, including “Lips Whisper” and “Young.” She also sang a Beyonce cover of “Drunk in Love.” I am excited to an-nounce that we have another indie band visiting The Buzz on Hallow-een. They go by the name of Muddy Ruckus. Their sound can be com-pared to Mumford & Sons or Cage The Elephant. We can’t wait to host them here at St. Bonaventure University. The Buzz is also hosting the Bona Buddies, mentored children from local elementary schools, during the week of Halloween. All in all, we are staying busy and having fun doing it.

Enjoy this spook-tacular issue of The Buzzworthy!

Hey Buzzworthy readers!

Halloween is here and I can’t believe we’re this far into the semester. The Buzz will soon start interviewing for several positions that will be opening next semester. Public relations, programming, music, production--there’s some-thing for everyone!

Also, please consider writing for us! We’re always looking for more talented writers.

Thanks for reading this edition of The Buzzworthy. I hope you all enjoy it!

AFCEAst

The New England Patriots currently stand atop the division after the solid plays of quarterbacks Jimmy Garop-polo and Jacoby Brissett amidst Tom Brady’s absence due to his four-game suspension. After losing the first two games of the season, the Buffalo Bills had a hot streak of four wins in a row before their loss to the Miami Dolphins in Week 7. Look for the Bills to be contenders for the Division or a Wild Card spot if they continue their solid play.

North

The Pittsburgh Steelers lead the AFC North with a 4-3 record. It will be interesting to see how the Steelers fare in the coming weeks with quarterback Ben Roethlisberger out 4-6 weeks after having surgery on his torn meniscus. Will the Steelers rally behind Landry Jones? Or will the team drop from its winning ways?

south

The AFC South is the tightest race of all the divisions in the AFC. The Houston Texans currently hold the top spot in the division at 4-3, but the Tennessee Titans and the

Jacksonville Jaguars also make a good case for candidates to break into that top spot in the division.

WEst

The AFC West seems the most balanced between teams going for the top spot. The Oakland Raiders and Denver Broncos are both 5-2. The Kansas City Chiefs are 4-2 and the San Diego Chargers are 3-4. With three straight games against teams below .500, the Chiefs can make a push to get towards the top of the division.

NFL SEASON STATS AND PREDICTIONS

The NFL is six weeks into its season and teams are beginning to move around in their divisions. There have been clear-cut leaders but also some surprises when it comes to top teams. Let’s take a look into the AFC and NFC to see what is going on in terms of standings in each division.

NFCEAst

The Dallas Cowboys have relied upon rookies Dak Prescott and Ezekiel Elliot to bring the team to a 5-1 record atop the NFC East. The Washington Redskins were making a push with four straight wins, but lost in their Week 7 matchup against the Detroit Lions.

North

Even after losing starting quarterback Teddy Bridgewater and starting running back Adrian Peterson to knee injuries, the Minnesota Vikings have put on a dominant performance at 5-1. The Green Bay Packers are not far behind at 4-2,and will play a huge part in the divisional race.

southThe Atlanta Falcons lead the NFC South with a 4-3 record. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers could pose a threat to the Falcons with a 2-0 record already in the division and a win against the Falcons in Week 1 of the season. The most surprising start for a team has been the Carolina Panthers. At 1-6, the team is far off from last year’s Super Bowl run and will need to focus on winning in the second half of the season.

WEstThe Seattle Seahawks have dominant command over the division at 4-1-1. The Sunday night matchup between the Arizona Cardinals and the Seahawks was an important test to see if the Seahawks can keep the top spot in the division, which ended in a 6-6 draw. The Los Angeles Rams are at 3-4 and the Cardinals are 3-3-1.

10 Last minute Costumes

Boxer No one will want to step in the ring with you in this costume. This is one of the easier costume ideas that is also comfortable. All you need is a white tank top or sports bra, athletic shorts, athletic wrap for your hands and a silk robe. For makeup, you can add a black eye or a busted lip for some fun.

Secret Agent On the night of Halloween there is a serious investigation going on that needs your

attention! So, what do you do? Throw on a secret agent costume of course! For guys, dress in a suit with some dark shades or aviators. Another option for both women and men are

black pants, a black shirt paired with a leather jacket or trench coat, black boots or shoes and then mysterious black shades to finish the look.

Hippie Waiting for the 1960s to come back won’t help you become a hippie. But do you know what will? A tie-dye shirt, printed pants, a flower crown and a pair of flip flops or sandals. Voila! You’ve become a hippie.

Baseball Player This costume will take you back to the good ol’ days, when nobody worried about cheating or scandals, they just enjoyed the game! For this costume, all you will need is a baseball or raglan shirt, a baseball glove, long athletic pants, sport socks paired with some sneakers and your favorite team’s baseball cap, of course!

Face emojis Emojis are still incredibly popular and we see them practically every day. There’s a large amount of facial expression emojis, so you can print out your favorite one from online to the size of your face, cut it out and put it to your face whenever someone asks you what you are. For an additional touch, you can have your outfit match the color of the emoji.

Angel or Devil Protect your mortal charges from danger or bring messages from On High in this costume. Simply wear all white and finish it with a pair of white wings and you’re done. For the opposite and more sinister fiend, all you need is your outfit to be all red with a pair of devil horns.

Painter You’ll be a work of art in this costume…or at least amid creating a work of art.

All you need is a painting palette and brush for this costume. For an added effect, flick paint onto the shirt you will be wearing or add an artsy beret!

Tourist You’ll become every vacationer’s worst nightmare in this costume. For this costume, you’ll need a pair of sneakers or sandals with some socks, khaki pants, a tropical shirt, a straw or fisherman hat, sunglasses and a camera. You can mix things up with this costume, like adding a fake sunburn or putting some sunscreen on your nose.

Lumberjack Timber! This costume will have you looking like a grizzly man or woman from the wilderness. With a checkered or plaid shirt, jeans with some suspenders and boots, you’ll be prepared for wild night ahead.

The Bachelorette or The Bachelor “Will you take this rose?” Dress in your best attire for the

one you want to impress Halloween night. Carry a single rose with you for the night and you’ll have the costume down.

Spooky Streaming this Halloween Season

Everyone has their favorite Halloween traditions. Whether it’s dressing up or eating candy, it’s easy to find your muse. However, a widespread favorite of many is hanging with friends and binge-watching Netflix. The streaming catalog this year doesn’t have many of the classics we adore, but it makes up for it with solid independent films and plenty of scares to go around.

Here’s five films you need to add to your queue for the spooky season.

Hush: One of the best horror films in recent memory, Hush offers scares mixed with wit and satire. Essentially a new take on the “home invasion” genre, Mike Flanagan of Oculus fame changes the game by making the protagonist an unlikely heroine. The basic plot follows an author named Maddie Young, an intelligent woman who lost her hearing as a teenager. Young lives alone in the woods, basically isolated from the outside world. At first, Hush gives in to the typical tropes of the genre. But as the film goes on, the plot takes several twists and turns. Using special innovations like the iPhone, Skype and other means of communication, 2016’s Hush brings a new dimension to the cat and mouse thriller. Certified 100 percent fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, if you’re looking for a smart and innovative thriller, Hush should satisfy your craving.

Corpse Bride: Admittedly not one of legendary direc-tor Tim Burton’s best, 2005’s Corpse Bride has garnered a cult following for its beautiful animation and excellent depiction of nineteenth century Europe. The film follows a young man named Victor (Johnny Depp) who mistakenly weds a corpse bride. A simple, yet effective premise, the film elevates through gorgeous cinematography and one of the coolest depictions of the un-derworld warped by the visionary mind of Burton. Certified 83 percent fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, give this cult classic a try if you love the visual aspect of film and Halloween.

VHS Series: One of the best parts about Halloween media is the anthology aspect. From The Twilight Zone to Creepshow, short stories of terror and just desserts dished out bring back the EC Comic feel. Lately, anthology horror has fallen off, but one series has shown a solid enough anthology set. The VHS series, using the found-footage formula, blew up from a minor indie-flick into a horror-hipster phenomenon. The first installment definitely has some flaws, but the stories still grasp your interest. The shining example comes from the sequel, featuring haunting Japanese ghost stories and insane acid-trip zombie escapades as just two examples. The third installment, VHS Viral, falls down a bit low-brow, but decide that for yourself and check them all out.

Page 9: Halloween Edition - wsbuthebuzzworthy.files.wordpress.com€¦ · this Halloween Season Everyone has their favorite Halloween traditions. Whether it’s dressing up or eating candy,

Re-Animator: A fun 80s gore flick guaranteed to make you laugh and churn your stomach at the same time, Stuart Gordon’s 1985 cult classic shows off everything a horror nerd wants. Loosely based off an H.P. Lovecraft story, Re-Animator follows a medical student (Jeffrey Combs) as he brings backhis professor from the dead. From there, the film dives into a campy and gory romp sure to please fans of the genre. It’s not for everyone, but if you’re looking for a good time and don’t get squeamish, consider putting this one on during your horror movie binge.

Creep: If you want something to give you the creeps, this realistic thriller will do it. 2014’s Creep, directed by Patrick Brice, takes a concept too real and turns it into a nightmare. Brice stars as Aaron, who answers a Craigslist ad to film a dying father’s video for his unborn son. Josef, played brilliantly by Mark duPlass of indie-film fame, brings about an unsettling tone and his genuine nature keeps you on edge. While not the highest-rated film, this little known gem will do the job if you’re looking to get creeped out.

If you have , check these out:

- Final Destination- Gremlins- An American Werewolf In London- Tales From The Darkside- 1408

Honorable Mention: The Twilight Zone It’s a TV show, but you can’t go wrong with the spearhead of the horror anthology film, The Twilight Zone. Rod Serling’s warped worldof frights and overall compelling tales has just about inspired the majority of horror films and TV shows that came after it. Don’t miss this great series, which you can stream in its entirety on Amazon for free with a prime membership.

Bumming your buddy’s password? This is for you: - 28 Days Later & 28 Weeks Later- Cabin Fever- The Forest- Poltergeist - Coraline

Honorable Mention: Tales From The Crypt Another TV show, but a worthy watch, comes from the EC Comic-inspired Tales From The Crypt. Filled with all the great just dessert stories and creative scenarios that filled the classic comics, this 90s classic has several seasons to binge and enjoy. (It’s also on YouTube)

Got ? We have you covered: - Eraserhead- Carnival of Souls- Child’s Play- The Blair Witch Project- The Others

wsbuthebuzzworthy.com 9

Honorable Mention: Twin PeaksFrom the warped mind of David Lynch, Twin Peaks starts out innocent enough and then delves into the devilishly insane. Fans of the ridiculously weird or the unexplainable should flock to this 90s cult TV series.

Top Five Horror Films

Horror films are synonymous with Halloween. You can’t have one without the other. But there are certain horror movies that are more perfect for Halloween than the rest. These movies are classics of the genre. Some simply work best with Halloween because they are set during the fall-time holiday. These are some of the best films to watch on Halloween night.

Honorable mentions: The House of the Devil, Friday the 13th, Evil Dead (1&2), You’re Next, Psycho and The Conjuring

5. The Saw FranchiseThe first movie on the list is actually seven movies. From 2004-2010, the polarizing horror franchise released a new installment every Halloween. The franchise even had a tagline saying “If it’s Halloween, it must be Saw.” Saw is almost a Halloween tradition. The holiday would feel incomplete without a marathon of the seven films. While the quality of each film gets exponentially worse as you keepwatching, a marathon is fun because you get the best of both worlds. You get to enjoy the suspenseful and scary first three films and then you get to enjoy the so-bad-they’re-good final four films.

4. The Cabin in the WoodsWhat horror movie is better than a self-aware one? The Cabin in the Woods is a genuinely great horror film that also pokes fun at typical horror tropes. Every Halloween needs a Cabin in the Woods-style horror film. There is just something about being in an old cabin in the woods that is more terrifying than anything else. While the go-to pick for that subgenre would be the Evil Dead films, The Cabin in the Woods pays homage to Evil Dead. However, it also holds its own as a more modern equal.

3. Trick r’ TreatTrick r’ Treat is a horror film that follows five different horrific, interwoven stories that all take place on one Halloween night. It’s unique and different from any other horror film I have ever seen. It also captures the Halloween vibe perfectly. What’s better to watch on Halloween than a horror movie literally just about Halloween. It has the perfect feel and the right amount of scares to make your Halloween night perfect.

2. Night of the Living DeadA classic, through and through. George A. Romero’s 1968 opus that invented the modern zombie is one of the best movies you can watch on Halloween. The black and white film is old enough to be a bit goofy and fun, but still has the capabilities to creep you out. If you have to pick one classic to watch this year, skip Dracula and Frankenstein and pop a real horror film into your DVD player.

1. HalloweenJohn Carpenter’s masterpiece is the perfect film to watch on Halloween night. The suspenseful slasher set on Halloween night defined the genre in the late 70s. It spawned one of the biggest villains in all of horror, Michael Myers. Carpenter’s script cannot be beat by any other in the genre. The cinematography builds the suspense that leads to some of the best scares in film. Not to mention that Halloween has proven to be a highly influential film in general. If you take a look at horror films being made today, like It Follows, you can see how clearly the film influenced how they use the camera to build suspense. It’s a high-quality horror movie with a great Halloween feel, and it is a classic influential film. There is so much to love about Halloween that it is the perfect film to watch on Halloween night.

Halloween is a holiday that always changes in meaning as you grow up. Unlike predictable holidays like Thanksgiving or Christmas, you never know what you’ll be doing on Halloween night.

When I was younger, Halloween meant dressing up in a costume my mom picked out, walking five houses down my street for candy and then turning back around because I didn’t want to walk anymore. In high school, I would create a matching costume with my friend, eat all of the candy we were supposed to give out and then sit on the couch and drink a little bit. However, one thing that has never changed is my tradition of watching movies on Halloween. My favorite movie being the cult-classic musical film, The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show is based on the musical stage production, “The Rocky Horror Show.” The film is a mix of early science fiction and “schlock horror.” Both are written by Richard O’Brien who also starred as Riff Raff in the film. The film also stars Tim Curry as Dr. Frank N. Furter, Susan Sarandon as Janet Weiss and Meat Loaf as Eddie.

Released in 1975, the film generated a large cult following for its music and LGBT message. Brad Majors and Janet Weiss are a prude engaged couple who would be described as “squares” during the time period. During a rainstorm, the two discover Dr. Frank N. Furter’s castle, a scandalous scientist and self-proclaimed “sweet transvestite from Transsexual, Transylvania.” Brad and Janet become an audience to Frank N. Furter’s convention and announcement of his creation, Rocky, his newest lover.

Dr. Frank N. Furter’s castle is full of his ex-lovers, Riff Raff, Magenta, Columbia and Eddie. Brad and Janet are also subjected to Frank N. Furter’s sexual aura when he seduces both of them separately. While this represents Brad and Janet’s sexual awakening, the film presents the fluidity and liberation of gender and sexuality.

A Halloween Tradition

Page 13: Halloween Edition - wsbuthebuzzworthy.files.wordpress.com€¦ · this Halloween Season Everyone has their favorite Halloween traditions. Whether it’s dressing up or eating candy,

13wsbuthebuzzworthy.com

The film is outrageous and inappropriate at times, and Tim Curry’s performance is iconic. People all over the world have recreated the costumes of the film’s characters for Halloween and special showings of the film.

The film may be best known for its audience participation. Yes, this film is so crazy that it has an official script for participation, props and call backs. The dedicated fans of the film dress up and participate by dancing, shouting out expletives at the characters (call backs) and using props during specific scenes. The Rocky Horror Picture Show is best experienced at a drive-in or a midnight showing at a theater. Many theaters will provide props such as rice, newspaper, water guns, flashlights, rubber gloves and toilet paper, all necessary to interact with the scenes of the film.

The most well-known song from the film is “Time Warp.” Even if you’ve never seen the film, you’ve definitely heard the song at a Halloween party. The “Time Warp” dance is well-known amongst dance songs like “Cha Cha Slide.” The “Time Warp” provides dance choreography within the song: “It’s just a jump to the left and then a step to the right / Put your hands on your hips,” etc.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show is a classic Halloween traditionamong generations. I love watching the film with my mom who, is also a big fan. I also love to share the film with people who have never seen it before.

And don’t just show it at your next Halloween party. Buy all of the props. Print out the audience particpation scripts.

Invite people to dress up. Make Rocky Horror-themed Hall-oween treats. There’s no wrong way to watch this Halloween

classic.

Agnes Obel is known for her integration of cello, piano and vocals in her music, but she is anything but classical. The Danish composer and musician creates lush soundscapes that wash over listeners, and the songs on her third and newest album, Citizen of Glass, which came out Oct. 21, are no different.

In interviews, Obel, who is based in Berlin, said the name of the album comes from the German legal term “gläserner burger,” or glass citizen, which refers to the amount of privacy citizens of a state have. “I really wanted to put across the feeling of being transparent because I definitely look up to the singers and writers who use themselves like that,” she told Independent. “But I’m also scared of this idea of using oneself, teetering on the border of private and personal.”

The album begins with “Stretch Your Eyes,” a piece that begins with echoing strings that descend down a chromatic scale with a gentle drumming in the background. In the chorus, she says, “You can give to my heart / Thousand words or more,” which makes love sound like an academic essay or a formulaic process, which often is what occurs between celebrity couples constantly in the spotlight.

The single “Familiar” is one of the best songs on the album in its cohesiveness and fullness. It opens with a simple keyboard melody which is then joined by Obel’s crystal clear voice and swirling strings. The song is about a love kept quiet. For the melody, Obel alters her voice to sound like a layered, throaty man’s voice as she sings, “Our love is a ghost that the others can’t see / it’s a danger / Every shade of us you fade down to keep / them in the dark on who we are.” Thus, she creates a battle between the different voices of the verses and the chorus. It seems Obel is battling the struggle of whether to keep her personal life private as she would like to or whether she owes others transparency, a state of being glass.

Another highlight of the album is “Trojan Horses.” Of this song, she told Independent, “I wanted to communicate that I don’t feel 100 percent about everything with the song ‘Trojan Horses’ and I wanted to write about it’s like having Trojan horses in your head,” she continues. “You feel like you’re made of glass and watch yourself from the outside, you sort of like it but don’t.” The piece begins with a long brass note joined by a piercing keyboard melody, then strings, then vocals. Obel sings, “I tell myself I wanna hide / I tell myself I wanna be lied to / Silent reader of my mind, do you know what I will ask of you?” Again, we see her grappling with her relationship with her audience, the public and feelings of vulnerability and over-exposure.

Citizen of Glass is a haunting album that leaves the listener wondering about the responsibilities of celebrity and the nature of the public versus private aspects of our lives.

“Hunt for the Wilderpeople” Review

A true hidden gem, Hunt for the Wilderpeople deserves way more attention than it’s gotten. The movie follows Ricky (Julian Dennison), a rap-obsessed young New Zealander who moves from foster home to fos-ter home with a reputation for misbehaving. After being moved from the city to the countryside, he starts off on a wild adventure that incites a national manhunt.

The film also stars a familiar face with an unfamiliar accent. Most people recognize Sam Neill from his starring role in Jurassic Park, but many may not know he is actually from New Zealand. Needless to say, Sam Neill delivers an amazing performance in this film. He shows off a lot of emotional and comedic range that’s unexpected from the actor.

The film is quirky and involves a lot of visual humor as well as traditional. It’s cut in a certain way to create comedy. For example, quick cuts and zoom-ins create the feel of a 1980s action film, but in the context of this adventure/comedy it feels out of place in the most humorous way. The film even acknowledges this sort of reference with a hilarious dialogue in the film about Terminator.

Hunt for the Wilderpeople is hilarious, highly stylized and reminiscent of an Edgar Wright film. However, this film is not directed by Wright, but by Taika Waiti-ti. Waititi may not be a household name at the moment, but he is slowly making his way in. He already directed the funny mockumentary about vampires, What We Do in the Shadows and is currently directing Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok. So, needless to say, he is starting to get the attention he deserves. But Hunt for the Wilderpeople is still an under-the-radar film. The film was a hit with critics, scoring a 98 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and 81 on Metacritic. The only thing it’s missing is a larger audience. It never got a wide theatrical release in the US and its Blu-ray DVD release date was far from clear.

Ryan Horan

I, for example, picked up the DVD in Walmart more than a week before the consen-sus release date of Oct. 25. This poor distribution is most likely to blame for the film’s only fault: it had no attention. But if you see the DVD while walking through Walmart or if the film appears on Netflix, I must insist that you watch it. You will thank me later.
