1. Introduction

This survey was started in 2009 and completed in September 2010. It is a record of the inscriptions found on memorials in the churchyard and church of St Botolph, Hadstock. It is not therefore a record of burials, nor even all the marked graves but does however record information such as occupation, nicknames, maiden names, circumstances of death and so on, which is not necessarily found elsewhere. Gravestones often do not weather well and over time the inscriptions are lost, hence the importance of recording them whilst still (mostly) legible. Where there is uncertainty as to the inscription or some parts are illegible, this has been indicated in the record. No attempt has been made to guess nor to add information from other sources. Hadstock is a small village in north west Essex on the Cambridgeshire border. The church of St Botolph stands on higher ground surrounded by its churchyard. The building is an outstanding example of an Anglo-Saxon church with medieval and later Victorian alterations and additions. Its size is of minster proportions, this and its location point to it being the minster built by Canute in 1020 after his victory in 1016 at the battle of Assandon. This will remain a matter of academic debate as there are no surviving records as to its exact location. Hadstock was a poor rural parish and so few could afford the expense of a lasting memorial such as a headstone. Much of the churchyard consists of unmarked common graves. The earliest memorial found is dated 1796 with several others from the middle of the 19

th century. It is probable that others from this period

have been lost and there are a dozen or so propped against the church exterior walls whose inscriptions are illegible. Also included are the two village war memorials. One installed in 1920 on the wall of the church‟s south transept records the names of parish men killed in the 1914-18 war with those killed in the second war added later. Another memorial to those killed in the Second World War is in the entrance to the adjacent village hall (formerly a school). History: Nov. 2010 Dec. 2010 minor corrections

4 Notes: i) Recording of the inscription:

( ) indicates text which is unclear or uncertain. (--) indicates unreadable characters. [ ] indicates brackets actually appear on the inscription. / end of line on actual memorial inscription

ii) Only the information found is included in the record, so for example if both birth and death dates are shown, but not age, then age has not been included although it could of course be worked out from the dates given.

iii) Headstones placed against or near church walls with no legible inscription have not been recorded. iv) Graves 66, 67 &69 are marked with simple wooden crosses which have no inscriptions. v) The following graves have headstones with no legible inscription: 75 (headstone on ground) 150 (broken, lying face down) vi) Footstones placed against or near church walls and without a matching headstone: LH 1874 EH 1876 GF 1898 TB (no date) HH 1890
