What obstacles can you identify within the creative economy and what can we do at the summit to overcome them
Cost of software and materials
Limited access to software
Lack of awareness of the creative economy with youth More hands on training
Lack of opportunities for youth to gain experience
Lack of internships
Lack of experience
Perceived lack of stability in jobscareers Lack of company incentives to hire youth Lack of marketing the creative economy Creative economy seems focused in the Downtown when it needs to spread across the city No action with the HACE plan Difficult to access the existing talent pool
4 How can Summit 2013 support youth How can Summit 2013 be designed to support youth before during and after the Summit ends
Before and after workshops that allow for interaction with business and youth Industry parent information night - show the parents the opportunities Competitions - encouraging creativity any topic based on theme ie flower petal Pilot opportunities during the summit to be exposed to the vendors that offer experiences in the digital economy Live music street art other teasers leading up to summit
Workshop at summit how not to be a starving artist The Summit could help coordinate a program that allows students to be paid or get community service hours for the creative work that they are doing which will also help them build a portfolio to help them get work by the time that they graduate This way they are constantly building their creative portfolios Subscription email eg Giant box and get a weekly email facebook Brampton events connections for young people (social network connections) Creative stuff that is free eg What is happening in high schools that is free to the public Pulling back events going on in the high schools (more of a reciprocal relationship with the city city venue for publicizing great work happening in the high schools) How young people can get involved in creative ventures (publicize opportunities for young people)

5 While students look to connect with businesses likewise businesses struggle to connect with the talent in the next generation workforce How can Summit 2013 be designed to help both sides connect
bull Volunteer opportunities for youth to gain experience bull Greater understanding of what is available to youth bull Providing with both sides with information on both sides Youth and
businesses
bull Develop a hub (virtual or live) to upload work and have people view it Behance - ongoing site that is constantly being updated
bull Interactivity engagement and impressions bull Repositoryinventory of jobs in Brampton in creative economy bull Businesses need to interact with teachers (guidance dept) bull Keep Brampton people in Brampton bull Informing students of opportunities through showcases and open houses
Students need the information to understand what is going on around them Have businessescollegesuniversities meet a small amount of students at a time - say twenty - to have more intimate personable interaction so that neither feel like just a number and students can ask for business cards
bull It is also important for teachers to publicize the efforts of students as well Technology can be utilized to do this conversations can be organized through Twitter and Facebook This will help to generate exposure
bull 10000 businesses in Brampton crying out for young people they need to create connections
bull After the summit businesses into the schools (opportunities for volunteer work)
bull Bring businesses to the summit that will have opportunities for young people
bull Connections through program departments in schools (contact list so businesses know who to call) on the student side students achieve credit (eg Mark on an assignment) to make the business volunteer work real and connected to curriculum
bull Social media connection platform board of trade a vehicle for making connections between young people and businesses
bull Need follow up from the summit
