“Christ will come again!”

Advent begins with the hope of a new future.

In the readings of the first two Sundays of Ad-

vent, the second coming of Christ at the end of

time is stressed. In the third and fourth Sundays

a en on is drawn to the first coming of Christ at His birth in

Bethlehem.

We live in the time between the first and the second comings 

of Christ. We wait and live in hope of our redemp on. The

prayer a er the Our Father at Mass is very clear about this.

“In your mercy keep us free from sin and protect us from all

anxiety as we wait in joyful hope for the coming of our savior,

Jesus Christ.” Joyful hope is the mark of a true Chris an

knowing that the coming of Christ means a new life over-

coming all the trials and obstacles of the present.

One thing is clear in the Advent and Christmas readings: the

imagery of darkness and light. Certainly the first coming of

Christ in His birth at Bethlehem used the symbol of light

(e.g.: following the eastern star… “Those who have been in

darkness have seen a great light.”) As we look forward to

the second coming of Christ, we look to move from darkness

to light, the same imagery of the first coming of Christ 2000

years ago.

If, as John writes, God is light, the personification of evil more

than merits the tle Prince of Darkness bestowed early in

the Chris an era. Light may be vision; darkness, blindness.

Light may be virtue; darkness, sin. Light may be wisdom;

darkness ignorance. Light may be comprehension; darkness,

delusion. Light may be truth; darkness, fallacy. Light may be

the personification of goodness; darkness, the personification

of evil. Light may simply be day; darkness, nothing more

than night.

Light can also come from within. Certainly this is an apt sym-

bol for the Holy Spirit that dwells within each of us in our

souls. This is the spark that gives life; allows us each breath

that we breathe. No wonder that the Holy Spirit gives

‘inspira on’; the root of which refers to taking in breath. So

during Advent we also prepare for the Coming of Christ into

our hearts each Christmas.

Saint Cyril of Jerusalem, 315-385, writes on the twofold

coming of Christ, which presents clearly the church's under-

standing of Advent. He declares,

"We do not preach only one coming of Christ, but a second

as well, much more glorious than the first. The first coming

was marked by pa ence; the second will bring the crown of

a divine kingdom.

In general, what relates to our Lord Jesus Christ has three

aspects. There is a birth from God before the ages, and a birth

from a Virgin at the fullness of me. There is also a hidden

coming before all eyes s ll in the future.

At the first coming he was wrapped in swaddling clothes in a

manger. At His second coming, He will be clothed with the

garment of light. In the first coming he endured the cross, in

the second coming he will be in glory. We look then beyond

the first coming and await the second.

At the first coming we said, 'Blessed is he who comes in the

name of the Lord'. At the second we shall say it again; we

shall to meet the Lord and cry out in adora on: 'Blessed is he

who comes in the name of Lord.’ Thus He will come at the

end of the world in glory. For there will be an end to this

world and this created world will be made new.”

"¡Cristo vendrá otra vez!"

El Adviento comienza con la esperanza de un

nuevo futuro. En las lecturas de los dos primeros

domingos de Adviento, se destaca la segunda

venida de Cristo al final de los tiempos. En los

domingos tercero y cuarto se llama la atención sobre la pri-

mera venida de Cristo en su nacimiento en Belén.

Vivimos en el  empo entre la primera y la segunda venidas 

de Cristo. Esperamos y vivimos con la esperanza de nuestra

redención. La oración después del Padre Nuestro en la Misa

es muy clara al respecto. "En tu misericordia, mantennos

libres del pecado y protégenos de toda ansiedad mientras

esperamos con gozosa esperanza la venida de nuestro

salvador, Jesucristo". La esperanza gozosa es la marca de un

verdadero cris ano sabiendo que la venida de Cristo significa

un nuevo vida superando todas las pruebas y obstáculos del

presente.

Una cosa está clara en las lecturas de Adviento y Navidad:

las imágenes de la oscuridad y la luz. Ciertamente, la primera

venida de Cristo en su nacimiento en Belén usó el símbolo de

la luz. (por ejemplo: siguiendo la estrella oriental… "Los que

han estado en la oscuridad han visto una gran luz".)

Mientras esperamos la segunda venida de Cristo, buscamos

pasar de la oscuridad a la luz, la misma imagen de la primera

venida de Cristo hace 2000 años.

Si, como escribe John, Dios es luz, la personificación del mal

más que merece el tulo Príncipe de las Tinieblas otorgado a

principios de la era cris ana. La luz puede ser visión; oscuri-

dad, ceguera. La luz puede ser virtud; oscuridad, pecado. La

luz puede ser sabiduría; oscuridad, ignorancia. La luz puede

ser comprensión; oscuridad, ilusión. La luz puede ser verdad;

oscuridad, falacia. La luz puede ser la personificación de la

bondad; oscuridad, la personificación del mal. La luz puede ser

simplemente día; oscuridad, nada más que la noche.

La luz también puede venir de adentro. Ciertamente, este es

un símbolo apto para el Espíritu Santo que habita dentro de

cada uno de nosotros en nuestras almas. Esta es la chispa

que da vida; nos permite cada respiración que respiramos.

No es de extrañar que el Espíritu Santo dé "inspiración"; cuya

raíz se refiere a tomar un respiro. Así que durante el Advien-

to también nos preparamos para la Venida de Cristo a nues-

tros corazones cada Navidad.

San Cirilo de Jerusalén, 315-385, escribe sobre la doble venida

de Cristo, que presenta claramente la comprensión de la

El Papa Francisco nombró al Reverendísimo Alberto Rojas como Obispo Coadjutor de San Bernardino. El obispo Rojas nació el 5 de enero de 1965 en Aguascalientes, México. Fue ordenado sacerdote para la archidiócesis de Chicago en 1997. Él se ha desempeñado como sacerdote asociado y como pastor para las parroquias de Chicago y como un instructor en el Seminario de la Universidad de Santa María del Lago en Mundelein, IL. En junio de 2011, el Reverendísimo Rojas fue nombrado obispo obispo auxiliar de Chicago. Él también ha servido como Vicario Episcopal del Vicariato I y Delegado Regional al V Encuentro. El obispo Rojas es miembro del subcomité de Asuntos Hispanos y fue miembro del Subcomité de Misiones Católicas Locales de la Conferencia Episcopal de Estados Unidos.

Pope Francis has appointed the Most Reverend Alberto Rojas as Coadjutor Bishop of San Bernardino. Bishop Rojas was born on January 5, 1965 in Aguascalientes, Mexico. He was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Chicago in 1997. He has served as an associate priest and as pastor for Chicago parishes, and as a faculty member of Saint Mary of the Lake Seminary in Mundelein, IL. In June of 2011, Bishop Rojas was appointed as Auxiliary Bishop of Chicago. Bishop Rojas has also served as Episcopal Vicar for the Vicariate I and Regional Liaison for the V Encuentro. Within the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, he currently serves as a member of the Subcommi ee on Hispanic Affairs and has also served as a member of the Subcommi ee for Catholic Home Missions. -www.usccb.org

Shortly before Thanksgiving, we received an email from a concerned parishioner named Bob. A retired banker,

Bob alerted us to a misprint in the Annual Parish Stewardship Report! Our Total Income was not correct…

the total should have been much higher. Thankfully, this was not an accoun ng error; it was a typographical

error that I should have corrected when proofreading.

I am grateful for Bob’s a en on to detail and for sharing his concern… that’s a blessing! I am also grateful

because Bob’s message gave me a moment to slow down, review the data in greater detail, and then share something

special with you. First, let me share the corrected income report with you:

Yes, together, you and I donated over $ 1.3 million in the collec on basket last year! Our First Fruits funded efforts to feed

the hungry, clothe the naked, welcome the stranger, comfort those who mourn, worship God, celebrate the Sacraments,

and provide opportuni es for people to encounter and understand Jesus Christ.

Five years ago, we offered a total of $ 1.25 million — a difference of $ 60,000 for the good! Every me you and I have

increased our weekly giving, we have changed lives. How many people have returned to the Church through the Catholics

Returning Home ministry? How many of us have rediscovered Christ through a Parish Renewal Weekend? Over 5 years,

our First Fruits have funded other new ministries like Catholic Moms Connect, Rejuvenate Women’s Ministry, and bilingual

Grief Support. You and I have developed stronger programs for junior high and high school teenagers and have sponsored

their leadership training. Last year, we housed a Shelter for those who were homeless on cold or rainy winter nights. Last

week, we opened the Shelter; and we will shelter the homeless every night through March — regardless of the weather.

Jesus asks us to use our  me wisely while we await his return:  Praying, Serving, and Giving.  

As you wait, remember that every hour of prayer, of service to others, and of

treasure offered from the top PREPARES THE WAY OF THE LORD. Together,

our wai ng bears fruit when we create a community ready to welcome Him

when He comes.

PRIMEROS FRUTOS

In 1531, Our Blessed Mother appeared to St Juan Diego in Tepeyac, Mexico. When St Juan Diego presented to the bishop

flowers he had gathered in his lma (wrap), the flowers fell away and revealed the image below. Here, Our Lady was pictured

for the first me with the features of the new American, not Indian, but mes zo, the mixed race which would form the back-

bone of the new world in the Spanish plan of coloniza on. The image has not faded or deteriorated although exposed for

centuries. The image we s ll treasure today is the imprint which Our Lady herself le on the blanket of this humble Indian.

In 1999, Pope John Paul II, in his homily from the Solemn Mass at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe, declared the date of

December the 12th as a Liturgical Holy Day for the whole continent, and, established Our Lady as the Patroness of the Americas.

The Image of Our Lady includes symbols which were quickly understood by the Aztec Indians, and were so profound in mean-

ing that millions of them converted to Chris anity. Here is an explana on of the symbols from the University of Dayton:

SUN RAYS       The woman blocks the sun so only the rays come forth; she does not ex nguish it. She is greater than the sun, the dreaded god of war.

MOON The woman stands on the moon. She is greater than the god of night.

MANTLE  The mantle is turquoise, the color reserved for the Aztec’s supreme god, a mother-father god who was a source of unity for everything.

 STARS    In the Indian tradi on, the start of a par cular civiliza on was always accompanied by a comet or a body of stars. The stars on the mantle represent a new era.

MATERNITY  BAND        The band around the woman’s waist was the sign of a pregnant woman who is about to give birth; a sign that someone is yet to come.

FOUR  PETAL  FLOWER  OVER  THE WOMB      This was a special symbol of life, movement and deity – showing that she was the Mother of God.

HANDS    Her hands are poised in the Indian manner of offering, indica ng that something is to come from her.

EYES    The eyes are looking down, a posi on of humility revealing that, as great as she is, she is not a god. Indian gods were only depicted looking straight ahead.

FACE      The Indians felt that the face was the window of the inner person, a means by which one could read who a person was - the way a person would act. Her gaze is compassionate; and, the woman has dark skin and dark hair like that of the Indians.

THE BLACK CROSS ON THE BROOCH AT HER NECK showed that her God was that of the Spanish Missionaries.

ANGEL The “angel” underneath the woman was understood as an “intermediary god” carrying in a new civiliza on. In his right hand, he holds the starred mantle (from heaven) while in his le hand, he holds the red dress (from earth). He is seen therefore as an angelic messenger, linking heaven to earth. Many believe it represents St. Juan Diego.

Laudato Si’! - Caring for God’s Creation

In his 2016 message, “Show Mercy to our Common Home,” Pope Francis wrote, “let us learn to implore God’s mercy for those sins against creation that we have not hitherto acknowl-edged and confessed. Let us likewise commit ourselves to tak-ing concrete steps towards ecological conversion, which re-quires a clear recognition of our responsibility to ourselves, our neighbors, creation and the Creator.”

Creation Care Idea of the Week: Regarding this week’s Advent theme of preparation, and John the Baptist’s call for repentance, consider the six steps of Mercy 2 Earth’s examination of conscience: 1. Rest in the presence of God. 2. Give thanks for God’s creation and creatures 3. Reflect on the ways you have heard “both the cry of the

earth and the cry of the poor.” 4. Ask forgiveness for the ways you’ve fallen short in caring

for God’s creation and creatures. 5. Make amends by committing to concrete ways to show

Las Posadas at The Holy Name of Jesus 

Las Posadas is a tradi onal, family-friendly Advent ac vity in which we retrace the journey of the Blessed Mother and St. Joseph as they search for a place to stay in Bethlehem. Diocesan Development Fund / Fondo Desarollo Diocesano: In 2018, our Parish donated $ 165,414 to the DDF, which exceeded our dioce-san DDF goal of $124,200. Funds that met our DDF goal directly supported: Catholic Chari es as well as other ministries that feed, clothe, and assist the poor throughout San Bernardino and Riverside counties; provided diocesan training and formation for adults; and supported pro-life and family ministries for 92 parishes. And… directly funded seminarian forma on!

Monies that exceeded parish goals are refunded to the parishes without any further assessment. In 2019, we received a 2018 DDF Refund of $ 41,214 has been used for technology and security improvements.

Please consider making a dona on to the 2019 DDF before Christmas.
