Romantic Comedy Next in LGBTQ Film Series The LGBTQ Resource Center at Gulfport Public Library continues its free monthly LGBTQ Film Series on Thursday, March 12 with a coming of age romantic comedy rated by Rotten Tomatoes and The Advocate as among the best LGBTQ films.

The Film Series is a free gathering to watch a film on the second Thursday of each month. Each film begins at 7 p.m. in the Friends Room at Gulfport Public Library, 5501 28th Ave. S. Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Licensing restrictions prohibit explicitly naming film titles in general press releases. But feel free to call the library at 727-893-1074 for the film title and other information about the film series. Or find titles and more information at mygulfport.us/lgbtq-resources. About the March 12 film: Simon Spier is a nice normal teenage guy, in a normal loving family, and he’s looking forward to graduation. He also has a secret: he's gay. He has yet to tell his family or friends he is gay and he doesn't actually know the identity of the anonymous classmate he has fallen for online. Working through these issues becomes hilarious, terrifying and life-changing. “This film is a funny, heartfelt, and truly touching teen romantic comedy that instantly becomes a modern classic for today's

generation.” (Molly Freeman – Screen Rant) (Rated PG-13) Find out more about the Resource Center and the Library on the web at mygulfport.us/lgbtq-resources or on Facebook at Facebook.com/GulfportLibraryFL. Or contact the LGBTQ Resource Center by email to [email protected].

From the Mayor's Desk:Party Politics Widening the Chasm As we approach Florida’s closed primary and multiple state and federal elections later in the year, the political landscape looks increasingly hostile. It is the most divisive time since perhaps the Nixon era, and it seems that civil discourse has all but vanished. I believe that our two-party system shoulders much of the blame for where America finds itself. Allegiance to party has usurped allegiance to country, and indeed allegiance to our own moral compasses. Maps of our political demography show patches of blue and red, splitting us a little too cleanly into enemy camps. The fact is that most of us are neither purely blue or purely red; we are purple people. Most of us have more common ground than we do separation. Furthermore, our national parties are increasingly driven by the more extreme factions while the masses in the moderate middle are left to wonder where their place is on the battlefield. I would encourage all of us to step back from loyalty oaths, mudslinging, cherry-picked statistics and bitter rhetoric. I would ask that we all pay more attention to the character of the candidates than the letter in front of the name. Ethics, courage, inclusiveness, kindness and altruism should be part of every public servant’s track record. This should also be reflected in our candidates’ behavior on the campaign trail. If a candidate lies, cheats and steals to secure the job, then why should we expect any difference in how they perform their duties once in office? We need to recalibrate our standards, and stop making rash choices in a fog of hate. Republicans and Democrats can do better. If the party system continues to make it their mission to divide our nation then that will be their legacy. This isn’t a football game. There is no rah rah for our chosen team because we are all the home team. We are as the voters collectively, honestly, responsibly and thoughtfully tasked with doing what is best for our country, our states, our counties and cities. For all the people who live here. We hold this fragile democracy in our hands, and it is ours to lose if we do not protect the foundations upon which it was built. Let’s all do our part to look beyond the party lines, and take a hard look at the people we choose to elect. After all, it is intended to be government for the people, by the people – not for the party, by the party. Get out there and vote for a better world.

Town Shores Shuffleboard Season Begins The Town Shores Shuffleboard Club held their first tournament of the season on Friday, January 31. The play was singles, with men and women both vying for the title. Despite the inclement weather they had four courts of members contending. After the first game, brackets were determined, creating winners and consolation brackets, the winner winning all games and consolation losing only one. This was quite a feat, as there were a total of five games for each bracket. Former President Blair Libby outshone the 16 contestants for the win. Gerry Espanola won the consolation. Their next tournament will be held Friday, February 28, at 1 p.m.

Town Shores Shuffleboard Club President Cheryl Garron congratulates Blair Libby and Gerry Espanola (right) on their great play.

ARIES (March 21-April 19). What is the difference between giving someone attention and giving someone close attention? Forget about them; think about you. The difference is your takeaway. Close attention leads to understanding, to learning and to the pride of earning an A. Cursory attention is a C+ at best. TAURUS (April 20-May 20). Your mind is crafty. It can turn anything into something else. Just try it out. Think of an elephant, and then turn it into a fish. That was so easy, it barely took a second. Now change your mind about a limiting belief. This trick takes longer, but it will be easy once you accept that it will make you better. GEMINI (May 21-June 21). What is charm? You have it so innately that you don't realize what you're doing most of the time. It has to do with making the other person more important than you in the moment. It's giving your whole self over. This will feel like a joy at times, and at other times, it will feel like a sacrifice. Both will serve you well this week. CANCER (June 22-July 22). How a message is delivered will be very important. As you walk around in the world, you'll be aware of the sending of signals, sometimes subtle, sometimes desperate. Signals can be big, micro, meta, manipulative, artistic, mysterious, calculated. Your attention to communication will not be unpaid. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). Reasons – they are the solids the brain needs to function, the building blocks that allow for upward towers. Never underestimate the creativity alive in your brain. Reasons will be supplied.

They don't have to be true, make sense or be good ideas. And a hard "no" should be supplied to some of these reasons. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). There are people in your midst with talents you would like to have. Actually, you do have them. You just don't realize it yet. Recognizing the talent in others is a sign that there's something similar or complementary inside of you. And any time and effort you put into appreciation is the groundwork for what you might do. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). Among the most significant triggers in the animal kingdom is the trigger of scent. This is why, in the ancient world, when events of significance were occurring, the government would fill the fountains with incense oils. You'll be making an impression this week. Consider the power of scent. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). Some popular things are off-putting to you, and some things that offend others seem fine to you. This is just the concept of "fit" in action. What if you thought that nothing was wrong or right? Everything would just be a, "Yeah, that's for me" or a, "No, that's not for me." The need to judge things is often an overstated one. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21).

If you did a little too much of this or that, maybe the this or that is an area that you and yours need to put on the board under the category of "Things to work out." We are all in this together after all. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). Ideas bounce around in your head, and you want so badly to be able to pursue each one to its natural conclusion. Since that would be impossible, you'll have fun sorting, prioritizing and letting some of the possibilities go. Later, when you look back, you'll see this process as the most productive one. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). Determination and resolve will pay off, though it would be nice not to feel like life is an uphill battle. Everything you do shouldn't require massive expenditures of energy. You'll assess your output with the aim of efficiency and doing things that contribute to the best parts of your life. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). It's said that the best things in life are free. Yet, we pay for things in our lives in different ways. So, it is just as true that nothing is free, as the next moment will cost a breath and our friendships will cost attention, and our love lives will cost expenditures of heart that we will gladly give, giving being most of the joy of life.
