The Gulfport High School Swim Team had an excellent showing in the Biloxi Invitational held this past Saturday at the Biloxi High School Natatorium.

Teacher Academy students got a taste of real teaching during their first internship experience last week at Pass Road Elementary School and at 28

th Street Elementary School. The Institute students shared how they had to quickly alter their planned lessons for

the elementary students once they witnessed that the children were all on different levels of learning regarding their knowledge of the letters of the alphabet and their varying degrees of reading skills. Our students are looking forward to their next experience because they thoroughly enjoyed their time and were touched when the young children did not want them to leave their classes.

GIVING A HELPING HAND

On Saturday, September 6, students from the Gulfport High School’s Academic Institutes witnessed the release of ten Kemp’s Ridley sea turtles. More than 200 people gathered on the beach in Gulfport to take part in the release of these turtles back into their natural habitat. The majority of the turtles’ injuries were from fishing hooks, and sixteen more turtles are still being rehabilitated at the Institute for Marine Mammal Studies. The three largest and healthiest turtles that were recently released were fitted with tracking devices, so scientists and marine science students can track their migration patterns and possibly help in the protection of this species of sea turtles.
