FERMES, GRENIERS ET CHALETS

Jusqu’à la fin du xIxème siècle, les toits des fermes étaient essentiellement recouverts de chaume.La pente des toits trèsinclinée permettait de favoriser l’évacuation de la neige susceptible de mettre à mal la charpente en épicéa. Les toits d’aujourd’hui ont conservé cet angle d’inclinaison. Les greniers sont des “petites maisons en bois”, sans fenêtre et sur pilotis de poutres. On y préservait les récoltes de graines, les semences à l’écart des risques d’incendie. Le double toit (bardage et tôle) et le pilotis

permettaient de conserver ces biens précieux à l’abri de l’humidité. Toujours situés en alpage, les chalets abritaient la famille toute entière durant les quelques mois de l’estive lorsque les troupeaux suivaient la pousse de la végétation en altitude. Chaque famille disposait d’au moins un chalet.Farms, granaries and chalets. Until the end of the 19th century, most farms had steeply-pitched thatched roofs to prevent snow accumulating and damaging the spruce framework. Modern roofs have retained this steep pitch. The gra-naries were “little wooden houses” with no windows that were used to store har-vested grain and seeds away from the risk of fire. They were built on piles and given double roofs (weather-boar-ding and metal cladding) to keep theirprecious contents perfectly dry. Alpine chalets were designed to house the whole family during the sum-mer months, when livestock migrated up the mountain-side to find the most luxu-riant pasture. Each family had at least one chalet, many of which can still be seen in the alpine meadows.
