• Most wood houses

• Usually one-story high

• Few pieces of furniture

• Steep roofs

• Later had wooden shingles

•One of every three people lived in Ste.Genivieve and St.Louis.

•The people were African American.

• They got along well but sometimes they had problems.

• They traded.

• Indian lodges were open to French hunters.

• Indians sometimes got jobs.

• Fur trading and lead mining was very important.

• Lead mining was very hard work back then.

• Also fur was hard to get

• There was a lead mine near St.Geneve.

• One of the biggest trading post in Missouri was St. Louis!

• Most first Missourians were farmers!

• Everyone had to with the crops!

• the crops were kept in a field called the common field!

• Every one owned a strip of land to grow there crops!

• every one had to help keep the fence up!

•The French women planted and harvested their food.

•They also cleaned the house and took good care of the family.

•They even took care of the animals and helped the sick and hurt

•The French made gumbos and soups, along with stews.

•They also ate roasted and fried meats.

• Fruits, nuts, and berries are things they ate too.

•They sometimes even ate wild game.

•The men wore buckskin or rough cotton

•The women wore long red, or blue skirts and a short cotton jacket

•Most people didn’t go to school

•The richer families have the money for their kids to go to school.

•On special holidays they would go to festivals

•New Years Eve was special to the French

•They played jump ropes, Tic-tac-toe.
