Proteins, sugar and sexWe can see that the genes come from the reproductive cycle of insects, explains Professor Amdam. When bees are gravid, they want to consume protein. When not gravid, they want sugar and sex. The division of work occurs when some worker bees highly express the genes associated with gravidity and others have low levels of expression. This theory is gaining acceptance among a growing number of researchers.
