Grenadier Guards
Enlisted Casualties - 1st World War (Alphabetical List - Surname's)
The following Picture's and Poem's were submitted by the Chambers family, descendant's of Harry Hackett (15331) as noted above; The picture's are of
him accompanying his wife Olive, and of members of The Grenadier Guards 1st Battalion, convalescing at The Manor House, Dorchester in Dorset in
1916. It would appear that Harry had returned from active duty for reason's un-known to convalesce at Manor House, only to be returned and lose his life on
the 2nd April 1918. Whilst at Manor House he penned a poem on the 3rd January 1914, which reads as follow's; "After persuasion, I was made I
confess, to inscribe something here, I will now do my best, and if it was not for the one I love dear, I should not attempt to do anything so queer, but still after all it only seams' right, to do it for the one who has brightened my life. Harry
Hackett (15331) 3rd January 1914
The following poem was also submitted by the Chambers family, which was penned by: Sergeant A. Davies (12125) 5th Reserve Battalion, Grenadier Guards on the 7th
November 1917, whilst also convalescing at Manor House, Dorchester, Dorset. "I am a warrior of the Grenadier Guards, when at Hill Seventy (27.09.1915) we made
a glorious charge under a hail of shrapnel & shell, I was the resting place for three lumps of lead, one through the face, abdomen & leg, but thanks be unto God the giver
of life, who so kindly returned me to my dear child and dearest wife". Sadly, we do not know if Sergeant Davies appears within the photograph's below, but with regard to the injuries referred to in his poem, it would seem unlikely. Equally he is not listed as
lost by the CWGC, and may well have survived the war.
The CWGC have assisted in providing information, for which we are grateful.

Enlisted Casualties - 1st World War (Alphabetical List - Surname's)
The Postcard below was submitted by the Chambers family descendant's of Harry Hackett (15331) as noted on the previous page; The postcard sent to Harry's wife Olive and postmarked by the Army Post Office on the 9th January 1915 records a remarkable piece of history which came to be known as "The Christmas Truce" in 1914. It's clear that Harry was present and involved in the fraternization, as with present's of mind he obtained name's of two (2) German soldiers, whilst meeting we assume in "No Man's Land" as can be seen on the
card. We are able to discern the Name: Rudolf Mansoff from Bad Pyrmont (Lower Saxony - South Hanover) the 3rd line we cannot decipher, and an Ernst????, the surname being obscured by post office stamp, with the 4th line again un-deciphered.
The postcard reads: Dear O, I am sending you this postcard with two of the
German solidiers addresses on, which I got on Boxing Day. I suppose you saw in the papers about us going across, out of the trenches and having a word or two together. Hope you are well as it leaves me at present. With Love, from Harry.
The postcard left; places Harry along the Southern Edge of The Ypres Salient
Line, Christmas 1914. The fraternization between
opposing forces was almost entirely
concentrated in the British sector along the Southern Edge, in the general area of St-Eloi Hollebeke to Messines.

An extract from "The London Gazette," No. 31082, dated 24th December 1918, records the following:-"For most conspicuous bravery and devotion to duty at Cattenieres on the 9th October 1918. Private Holmes carried in two men under the most intense fire, and, while he was attending to a third case, he was severely wounded. In spite of this, he continued to carry wounded, and was shortly afterwards again wounded, with fatal results. By his self-sacrifice and disregard of danger he was the means of saving the lives of several of his comrades."
