DESCRIPTION

Green computing or green IT, refers to environmentally sustainable computing or IT. It is "the study and practice of designing, manufacturing, using, and disposing of computers, servers, and associated subsystems—such as monitors, printers, storage devices, and networking and communications systems—efficiently and effectively with minimal or no impact on the environment. Green IT also strives to achieve economic viability and improved system performance and use, while abiding by our social and ethical responsibilities. Thus, green IT includes the dimensions of environmental sustainability, the economics of energy efficiency, and the total cost of ownership, which includes the cost of disposal and recycling. It is the study and practice of using computing resources efficiently."

How much electricity does computers use?

Desktop computer uses about Max.300 watts

Per Hour = Rs.1.20/Per Hour Rs.1.20/-Per Day Rs.28.8/-Printers,Copiers,CRT Monitors are consuming morePower compare then Desktops Computers.Printers : When Printing 2.4KiloWatts(Kilowatts1000Watts)When Idle 310Watts

How to reduce the energy consumption?• Turn off the computer when not in use.

• Turn off the monitor when not in use. (as opposed to running a screen saver)

• Use power saver mode. (Standby,Hibernate,Power plan modes)

Power Management

• Keep computers and PCs turned off ,when not in use.

• Disable screen saver.

• Don’t print unless necessary and you are ready

• Use LCDs instead of CRTs as they are more power efficient

Email

• Use e-mail to reduce paper work.

• Add: *Please consider the environment : Do you really need to print this e-mail?

• Put entire message in subject line(“eom”).

Online

• Increase use of Internet and your Website. Place information on Web pages, wikis, blogs instead of making paper copies.

• Online courses consume nearly 90% less

energy and produce 85% fewer CO2 emissions
