BATTELLE STUDYOUTLINES STATE’S ECONOMIC PLAN

The Iowa Economic Development Authority, in conjunction with its affiliated organizations and members of the private sector, recently completed its year-long assessment and plan for Iowa’s economic future. The full report (costing upwards of $400,000 - funded entirely by contributions from the private sector) contains a comprehensive assessment of Iowa’s recent economic gains, the current economic climate, and strategies to capitalize on growth sectors of the future. Below are some highlights:

Iowa’s Economic Momentum is in the Right Direction

Over the last 7 years, Iowa’s growth in economic output outpaced the nation by more than 25%. In addition, Iowa’s non-farm personal income growth outpaced the nation by 42%.

Leading Sectors

Compared with the rest of the nation, Iowa’s leading specialized industries include agriculture & food production, heavy machinery, and renewable energy. Of those industries, agriculture & food production enjoys the highest economic multiplier. Job growth in the renewable energy sector in Iowa has outpaced the nation by 79%.

Innovation will be Key to Future Growth

While Iowa has strong sectors, future growth will be limited without innovation. If area companies fail to invest in transformative technologies in emerging sub-sectors, our economy will grow at a pace of less than 1% per year.

Workforce Pipeline Must Be Robust

It can often be challenging to encourage young people to pursue careers in sectors they have never heard of (try the biorenewable chemical industry, for instance). That said, these emerging sectors simply can not grow here without the right talent. Our jobs in workforce preparation will only become more difficult down the road.

Entrepreneurial Climate

Of our 15 ‘peer group’ states, Iowa ranks dead last for entrepreneurial activity, 13th for the number of new companies established annually, and 12th for the number of entities on the Inc. 5000 List of Fastest Growth Private Companies (2013). Given that many of our industries are mature, the entrepreneurial mindset of Iowans must increase at a rapid rate.

Physical Infrastructure

Iowa’s deteriorating transportation network must be confronted as well as the overall speed and reliability of the state’s broadband infrastructure. Only 21% of Iowa businesses have redundant broadband services, and that just isn’t good enough.

Conclusion

Iowa is on the right track, but it won’t be easy to stay there. If you would like to view the full report, head to www.iowaeconomicdevelopment.com/Resources/battelle.

MAJOR DOWNTOWN RESIDENTIAL PROJECT ANNOUNCEDVacant since a November 2010 fire, the landmark Tama Building at Third and Jefferson in downtown Burlington is slated to get a new lease on life. Operating as Tama Historic LLC, experienced Keokuk developer Kevin Kuckelman has been awarded a $3 million Community Development Block Grant from the Iowa Economic Development Authority for the creation of 48 upper story apartments in the Tama and adjacent event center building. The project would increase the number of downtown rental units by 30%.

“Since downtown residents draw businesses and additional investment, this will be a tremendously important redevelopment,” said Steve Frevert, Executive Director of Downtown Partners. “Currently we have 152 apartments downtown. With occupancy at 99%, the demand is definitely there. The five story Tama Building is one of the community’s signature properties, and its reuse will be a significant step forward in the continued revitalization of downtown.”

SMALL BUSINESS VISITS ADD VALUE Each year the Business Retention & Expansion committee conducts interviews with local small businesses. The Partnership wants to know what it is like for you to do business in Des Moines County. What are your challenges? What are your future plans for growth? What are the community strengths and weaknesses as a place to do business?

These visits are incredibly valuable to the organization, and we have used feedback from local business owners to help shape programming and provide input on public policy measures. The Business Retention committee has an aggressive goal of personally interviewing 70 businesses this spring. All the data collected during these visits is confidential. The data is aggregated and analyzed at the Partnership and on a state level.

The Greater Burlington Partnership has begun scheduling 2015 Small Business calls. If you would like to participate, contact Rachel Lindeen, Director of Member Services, at [email protected] or 319-208-0046 or Brenda Levitt, Economic Development Research Coordinator, at [email protected] or 319-208-0047.

This new initiative of the Entrepreneurship committee is designed to inspire and educate young people about what it takes to be an entrepreneur. Area juniors and seniors will receive instruction on idea creation, marketing, and finances that will prepare them to develop a basic business plan.

The keynote address will be given by Tana Goertz. Tana is an internationally-recognized TV personality, motivational speaker and business coach, as well as host of her own weekly radio show, “Hey Tana Time.” You may recognize her from NBC’s “The Apprentice” with Donald Trump.

At the end of the day, students will pitch their product and business plan to a panel of judges. All team members who compete in the finals will receive a gift card.

The youth entrepreneur challenge will be held on April 30. For more information, contact Brenda Levitt, Economic Development Research Coordinator at [email protected] or 319-208-0047.

Greater Burlington Leadership 2014-2015 continues to challenge participants and empower them to be better leaders. Class participants have had the opportunity to engage with numerous community leaders, learn about hot topics in Greater Burlington and why they are important. Each session offers opportunities for the participants to examine their own lives and personality traits and how leadership fits with their careers.

As in past years, the class participants will develop a group project to give back to the community. Many ideas have been brainstormed, and the list has been narrowed down. Preliminary project details are below and additional details will be shared with Chamber of Commerce members and the community in the upcoming months.

Greater Burlington Leadership is an intensive professional development series designed to strengthen leadership skills by empowering and educating people who live, work or have interest in Greater Burlington. The series is presented by the Greater Burlington Partnership.

If you would like to learn more about Greater Burlington Leadership, visit www.greaterburlington.com or contact Kay Sackville Breuer, Vice President, at [email protected] or 319-208-0041.

LEADERSHIP SERIES STRENGTHENS LEADERSHIP SKILLS

The Greater Burlington Leadership series is successful because of the participating

businesses and volunteers who welcome the class participants

to engage and learn.

LEADERSHIP CLASS DETERMINES GROUP PROJECT“Volunteer NOW!” will be the theme of the group project for Greater Burlington Leadership 2014-2015. “Our mission is to promote volunteerism in Des Moines County and the surrounding area and to raise awareness of the needs of local non-profit groups,” said Jenna Kuntz, CNH. “The first initiative will be to hold a pledge drive – we will be asking community members to complete a pledge form with their intent of hours and a segment (youth, healthcare, education, sports, cultural, etc.) that they would like to help.”

In conjunction with the pledge drive, the class will work with local non-profit organizations to determine what their needs are. The class will work to connect the non-profit organizations with volunteers who have an interest in their type of organization. The class also hopes to develop print materials with the non-profit organizations information as well as helping to add them to the Volunteer Iowa website.
