Beethoven’s last piano concerto ishis most brilliant and powerful. Thetwo extrovert outer movements arebalanced by the inward looking slowmovement, which moves into thefinale with a simple but magicaltransition. The whole cycle is oneof his most popular and successfulworks, and of crucial importance inthe history of Czech music. Budapest Festival OrchestraDohnányi Symphonic MinutesBeethoven Piano Concerto no. 2Brahms Symphony no. 4

Imogen Cooper pianoIván Fischer conductor

One of the world’s great orchestras, the Budapest Festival Orchestra’sprogramme begins with theircompatriot Dohnányi’s SymphonicMinutes. This attractive piece, in fiveshort movements, shows thecomposer’s mastery of the orchestra.Beethoven’s youthful piano concertoshows the composer advancingconfidently from Mozart’s model, with a tender slow movement andmischievous, sprightly finale. Brahms’Fourth Symphony is the fruit of alifetime wrestling with the problemof how to write symphonies afterBeethoven, and balance the dramaticand contemplative sides of his character. The four movements end with ahuge passacaglia, thirty variationson a theme from a Bach cantata.

Curiosity ShopCharles Dickens’ Old Curiosity Shop Revisited

Nell Trent lives with her grandfather above The Curiosity Shop, a vintage record store.

When the shop is repossessed by Quilp, a vicious loan shark, Nell and Grandpa are forced to hitthe road. Living rough they meet the usual suspects – con men, Good Samaritans, wide boys andbuskers – in cities and villages across England.

Imaginatively translated to the present day, Dickens’ story of love, human frailty and downrightwickedness has a fabulous cast of characters, from bent lawyer Sally Brass to wide boy rapperDick E. Swiveller. Playfully staged and featuring film and a soundtrack that takes in hits from Bach to Bowie, Curiosity Shop shows England to be as much a cultural curiosity shop as it everwas in Dickens’ day…

Theatre Alibi last visited The Haymarket with their wonderful adaptation of Michael Frayn’s Spies.

Pink Martini“Incredibly catchy, so seductive… a new classic” Evening Standard

Pink Martini released their debutalbum in 1997, but it was not untilthe single Hey Eugene startedreceiving regular airplay in 2007 thatthe UK started to take notice. Theirstyle draws inspiration from musicfrom all over the world – crossinggenres of classical, jazz and old-fashioned pop. Founding memberThomas Lauderdale says “All of us in Pink Martini have studied differentlanguages as well as different styles of music from different parts of theworld, so inevitably, our repertoire iswildly diverse. At one moment, you feel like you’re in the middle of asamba parade in Rio de Janeiro, andin the next moment, you’re in a Frenchmusic hall of the 1930s or a palazzo in Napoli. It’s a bit like an urbanmusical travelogue.”

Murder In Playby Simon Brett

Star cast to be announced

Written by Simon Brett, a prolific writer of whodunnits in the GoldenAge tradition of detective fiction, Murder In Play is a unique comedythriller which will entertain the audience with its wickedly clevermix of eccentric characters, complex plot twists and gentle humour.

The dress rehearsal of Boris Smolensky’s production, Murder atPriorswell Manor, is not going well. The actors are more interested intheir egos than the play, the props seem to have a life of their own,and the director has personal problems!

Suddenly fiction becomes reality when Boris’s wife, Renee ismurdered on stage. Who is the murderer? Was it Ginette, Boris’spretty but not exactly clever mistress? Was it Renee’s acting rivaland former TV soap star, Christa? Or was it Boris himself?

Using a play-within-a-play device, the fictional theatre companykeeps the audience guessing with numerous clues about themurderer until the final, thrilling denouement.

Mixing the intrigue of an Agatha Christie together with hilariouscharacters and a sophisticated story-line makes Murder in Play agreat evening out for all ages.

There have been many settingsof the Te Deum, but this version by Haydnis a cheerful and glorious work, typical of the composer. The neo-classical styleof Stravinsky’s ballet Pulcinella perfectlycompliments the work of Mozart andHaydn. Woody MannAmong guitarists and critics, Woody Mann is considered amodern master. While the blues arehis touchstone, he seems to drawinspiration from every direction, blending a myriad of influences withease and grace. Woody Mannreceived his first musical schoolingin the living room of Rev. Gary Davis, the now legendary blues, gospel, and ragtime guitarist. Though Davisdied in 1972, his guitar masteryproved to be an indelible influenceon his young student and friend. The passion, energy and artistry ofDavis’ early work became a lastingtouchstone for Mann as he embarkedon his own musical journey. Sincethen, he has pursued a rich anddiverse career, which ranges fromplaying with jazz great Attila Zoller,to accompanying songwriter DoriPrevin, and teaching guitar tolegendary recording artist Paul Simon.
