HFMA Fall Programs By Nicole Sulak Program Chair
Our goal is to provide quality education opportunities to our members! To that end, we’re working on several great live events along with numerous online education events. LIVE EVENTS In collaboration with MAHAP and MPAA, the MI Revenue Cycle Conference is occurring September 17-19, at Soaring Eagle Casino and Resort, in Mt. Pleasant. This year’s theme is ‘Delivering Permanent Change’ and has a robust agenda including Joe Fifer, current President of HFMA, a CFO panel to discuss the changing revenue cycle, and other great topics. Registration is open now at www.greatlakeshfma.org. This year we’ve enhanced the Annual Reimbursement Update by teaming it with a networking event. The event has moved locations, and will be held in Traverse City, on September 26. Sessions will include an update on Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement, insights to maximize reimbursement and reduce risk, suggestions for improving BCBS logging, best practices on patient financial counseling, and optimizing revenue recovery. After a great day of education, you’ll have a chance to unwind and get to know your fellow HFMA members during a wine tour on Leelanau Peninsula. Registration is open now at www.greatlakeshfma.org. The annual MI Fall Conference will take place October 21-22, again at the Inn at St. John’s in Plymouth. Infor-mation and registration will be available soon. The Great Lakes chapter covers a large geography, so we like to move around for our members. For our Upper Peninsula members (and certainly anyone else that wants to join), the UP Fall Conference will be in Marquette, on November 11. There have been reports that colors are starting to appear already due to this cool summer, so we may be late for the color tour, but it certainly is gorgeous country year round. WEBINARS All Region 6 chapters (which includes Great Lakes) are collaborating to offer ongoing webinars throughout the year. You will therefore see webinars offered by Region 6, rather than just the Great Lakes Chapter. Upcoming Region 6 webinars include the following: September 17 – Pricing Transparency October 16 – Ambulatory Payment Update November 19 – Revenue Cycle Leakage We are also providing a webinar series to assist members through the Certification process. This is a great op-portunity to receive the study materials and training for only $30! The webinars are September 16, 23, 30, Octo-ber 7, and a review session on November 4, 2014. If you missed the emails to register, please email Pam Allen at [email protected].

REGIONAL EXECUTIVE MESSAGE
Hello fellow HFMA members from Michigan and Ohio! My name is Mary Whitbread and I have the dis-tinct pleasure of filling the role of the Regional Executive for our chapter during the 2014 – 2015 year. As a Regional Executive, I serve as the liaison to National HFMA for our seven HFMA chapters in Michi-gan and Ohio. First, I would like to thank our outgoing Regional Executive, Chris Milligan from the Northeast Ohio chap-ter, for his work over the past several years. Chris was instrumental in improving the collaboration amongst the chapters in the region. I would also like to introduce our incoming Regional Executive Elect, Barb Shelley from the Western Michigan chapter. Barb is currently leading the regional webinar program and she will be the Regional Executive during the 2015 – 2016 HFMA year. Barb, Chris and I all had the pleasure of attending the recent chapter awards dinner at ANI and we are proud to say that the region was very successful this year with over 20 individual chapter awards and three multi-chapter awards, which included the Regional Yerger Award for our Regional Webinar Series. This past year the region provided sixteen webinars at no cost to our members, providing more the 1800 hours of education. Once again, ANI provided an excellent opportunity to learn from industry experts and it also provided the opportunity to network, meeting new people and connecting with friends. The days flew too quickly, but the experience was very rich. I encourage everyone to consider attending ANI in the future. The HFMA theme presented at ANI by chair Kari Cornicelli is “Leading the Change”. She encourages healthcare finance professionals at all levels to take a lead role in making a difference, to keep their or-ganizations strong by leading the strategic initiatives that will position their organization to deal with the rapid changes taking place in the healthcare industry today. This theme correlates with a recent book I read by Roger Connors and Tom Smith called Change the Culture, Change the Game. Culture is the way people think and act to achieve results. Culture can make the difference between the success and failure of an organization. The book instills the concepts that leaders must create the needed culture of an organization and that an effective culture is a culture of accountability. We as finance leaders can demonstrate a culture of accountability by acknowledging and working with others in the organization to own an issue, find solutions to the issue and drive the strategic initiatives to deal with the changes occurring in healthcare today. Knowledge is a key element to enable us as finance leaders to lead the needed change in healthcare today. HFMA is committed to providing the needed resources to expand our knowledge through educa-tional opportunities available through chapter, regional and national venues. Take advantage of these opportunities as often as possible.

REGISTERED STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS AND PROFESSIONAL ORGANIZATIONS: ARE THEY OF VALUE TO THE STUDENTS WHO JOIN?
By:
Danielle M. Marsrow
B.S.H.S. Saginaw Valley State University April 2014
Abstract
Employers are not just looking for students who excel academically. Where are students able
to learn these work related skills and abilities that employers are searching for? There are multiple
student organizations and professional organizations available for students to join that offer re-
sources, access to lectures, networking experiences and much more. The issue addressed in this
study is that joining Registered Student Organization (RSO) and professional organizations costs
money and takes time to be involved, yet colleges continually promote student involvement in these
organizations. Two questions are addressed in this study. First, does college student involvement in
RSOs and/or in professional organizations benefit the student by improving the likelihood of success
in their future career endeavors? Second, what are the benefits of professional associations and reg-
istered student organizations for college students who become members? For the purposes of this
study, the primary method of data collection is from secondary data. The data received to answer the
research questions came from research previously conducted. Based on the literature identified and
reviewed, students who joined registered student organizations and professional organizations while
in college were benefited by their involvement and had a better overall college experience and suc-
cess in their future careers. Benefits of RSO and professional organization involvement included net-
working opportunities, scholarship opportunities, resources, and access to conferences and lectures
that can provide further educational and career opportunities.
