when you have a sharper vision,

you see things ahead of others

‘Education’ is a learning process. The ‘learning’ refers to a substantial variety - acquiring general knowledge, honing powers of reasoning and judgment, and overall intellectual preparation for a mature life. In other words, an all round B-schools education is all this and then some more. It is an experience on a higher plane and in today’s economy, it is viewed as the vista through which career progression may be achieved. Great Lakes is by definition a provider of such an experience. I will proceed to open for you a tiny window through which you will get glimpses of life at Great Lakes. I hope this provides you with enough ammo to make your decision. Right from day zero, it is all about high-energy. The classes, assignments, experiential learning interludes etc., are round the clock and world-class. This is so at even some of the other premier institutes in the world; so where is the difference? Read on…

Great Lakes has a unique vertical specialization model where -- apart from choosing functional disciplines (like finance or marketing) -- students also choose a specific industry orientation (like BFSI or tech fusion) that best suits their area of interest/progress. All these courses are delivered by acclaimed teachers and management gurus in their own right. Great Lakes is also high on CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility), where our students are groomed not only to be exemplary corporate leaders, but also responsible citizens. To this end, the curriculum also includes chosen spiritual literature from around the world, emphasizing core values and ethical principles. The experiential learning interludes are supplemented by Empirical Research study, where students spend more than six months thoroughly researching their chosen topics.

Both inside and outside the classroom, Great Lakes prides itself on being a completely student-run Institution. Students participate in the majority of operational processes - making it a total democracy. They also play a critical role in organizing the multifarious events on campus. The research seminars and inter B-school competitions we organize, attract international participation; our cultural extravaganzas and fine arts interludes are second to none and the Institute Band certainly knows to strike the right chords! Students are also encouraged to explore the concept of ‘community service’ and care-share activities through our Karma Yoga Initiatives. We have a group of villages in and around campus which the students visit on a regular basis and offer services such as healthcare camps, literary and awareness drives, and so on.

Above all this, the experience that a ‘Gurukulam’ offers is nonpareil. The ambience in which students and teachers co-exist after class hours provides ample time and opportunity for introspection and overall rounding of one’s personality. Platinum rated, green & eco-friendly, our campus - spread over 27.5 acres - is equipped with cutting edge infrastructure and amenities. In all this, the common thread is that of being a large family and Great Lakes strives to be a home away from home during the period of your stay and forever after.

If all this works for you, your search ends here. Welcome to the Great Lakes family!

Dear Prospective Great Lakers,

Last year has been momentous in the journey of Great Lakes as we moved into a brand new LEED, platinum-rated green campus. In a year’s time, we have nicely settled down in this international class facility. The institute has not only grown in terms of its physical infrastructure but has also initiated 2 new programs - one each for the working executives of Chennai and surrounding areas (PGWPM), and for Energy Management (GEMBA).

The institute has made significant strides in terms of public/industry perception too. We are already ranked among the top 20 B-schools in the Business World June 2010 and that too in a short span of 6 years of existence, something which is unheard of in the Indian Business School domain. Apart from factors such as infrastructure, course content, pedagogy and international faculty, one of the major reasons we are being perceived so highly is the quality of students. We have been continuously improving in terms of our student profile and I am sure the incoming batch is going to be no exception.

Those of you who are looking for a career transforming experience are strongly advised to seriously consider Great Lakes as one of your top options. Needless to add, you will be making perhaps one of the best decisions in your life/career by deciding to be a Great Laker.

All the Best!

Welcome Aboard!

Message from Director PGPM

Great Lakes has come a long way since its inception in 2004. Within a short span of time, it has emerged as one of the leading business schools in India. The institute produces ‘Business Ready Managers’ who epitomise its motto - ‘Global Mindset, Indian Roots’. It has a rich culture which is a perfect blend of Academics, Team leadership and Continuous innovation. The dynamic environment here plays a great role in motivating everyone - faculty, staff and students - to deliver their best. We have a truly world-class faculty from top International B-schools such as Kellogg, Stanford, Harvard, IIT Chicago, Columbia, Yale, among many others. Our core faculty team, is comparable to the best in the country. This is supplemented with insightful guest lectures delivered by eminent personalities from the industry.

We do not believe in teaching; we encourage learning by doing. The culture in Great Lakes facilitates not only learning from academicians and eminent industry captains but peer learning as well. Aided by the latest technology, a scientifically designed curriculum, and continuous corporate interaction, our students are transformed from being first class management students into astute Thought Leaders who are ready to take on the challenges of the corporate world, both in India and abroad.

Giving back to society helps make every one of us a well-rounded human being. Our Karma Yoga project aims at achieving just that. Great Lakers help local NGOs and the underprivileged to give them a fighting chance at the future.

With all of these and so much more, your time at Great Lakes is not just a year in a business school, but an experience that will mould you into a well-rounded person. You will cherish this year for the rest of your lives.

I thank you for your interest in Great Lakes. We would be very happy to provide any additional information you may require on our school and its programs.

Message from

Dear Prospective Great Laker,

Great Lakes attracts the best management education aspirants in the country to its pristine campus in Chennai. As an organization, we are fairly certain of the inside-out value proposition that we deliver to the market. This year, we wanted to get a feel of the outside-in perception. What is it that brings aspirants from all over India to our School? Carefully sieving through threads, posts, tweets and blogs apart from the obvious interviews with our own students and alumni, we were able to integrate several rivulets of thoughts into a single river of logic – Why Great Lakes? Slowly, a pecking order started emerging. It is my pleasure to share that with you.

The most visible strength of ours is our truly global curriculum. Dynamic, innovative and integrative, the rich academic spread that we offer is our primary value proposition. In step with the curriculum is its delivery. Great Lakes brings a truly global faculty pool to its classrooms. Professors from Kellogg, Wharton, Stanford, Harvard, Yale and other Ivy League universities complement the distinguished full time faculty of Great Lakes. Third in the order is the delivery model– the compact one-year program. Anchored on our core principle of ‘Money Value of Time’, the fast track program ensures minimal loss of opportunity cost for the student population whom we are addressing – one who has spent a few years in the corporate kingdom and is briefly taking a school break, so to speak.

The next attraction for the market is the diversity that we bring to the classrooms. In terms of geography, there is no corner of India that is unrepresented within Great Lakes. In terms of industry, though the IT industry domi-nates as a single large pie, we have enrolments from auto, telecom, retail, BFSI, manufacturing, consulting, energy, construction – the list is long. This year, we are going to enhance this diversity by planning an International Admissions campaign as well.

Life in B-schools is not confined to the classroom. One needs an invigorating environment to rejuvenate body and soul. Great Lakes’ Platinum rated 27.5 acre ‘Green’ fully residential campus, with its state of art infrastruc-ture provides the much needed eco-system for the students to stretch their wings and transform themselves into ‘business ready managers’, ready to lead corporate India tomorrow.

If you have come this far, you already have a good idea of the Great Lakes value proposition. We know you intimately. You have the right CAT / GMAT score. You come with a winning, never-say-die attitude. You are confi-dent of coasting through the GD PI sessions. Your objective for seeking management education is clear. You have spent a few years in the Industry and have captured a good understanding of the corporate realm. The next surge you are waiting for is academic. Why Wait?

Go ahead and apply. Let us meet soon.

Alumni Speak“The biggest learning I had at Great Lakes was a substantial broadening of perspective. With a great team of academicians to guide the students and multiple opportunities to network with the who's who of industry, Great Lakes certainly fulfills its promise of creating 'business-ready' managers.”

Sitashwa Srivastava,Co-founder, creADvity

“For a mid-level executive with more than 12 years of industry experience, it was an interesting transition to become a student again; but the value add from this program turned out to be beyond expectations. In today's economy, the long learning curve is a luxury long gone. Today, trends peak in weeks, not years. Windows of opportunity open and close overnight. Success in today's rapidly moving world means having on hand the skills to anticipate change and seize opportunity.

The Great Lakes experience under Uncle Bala's able leadership enabled me to gain these skills at an accelerated speed within a reduced time span without losing focus on the most important aspect of life -- family ethos and values. The one-year PGPM rounded out my experience and education, reshaping my thinking and enhancing the degree of precision and focus that I can bring to create value.”

Sanjeev K Panicker,Asst Vice President,Scandent Group Incorporation, NY, USA

“After initial stints at Wipro for 5 years and a Dubai based IT Company for 3 years, I (along with 3 others) founded SSI Ltd. I was the COO for over 12 years. SSI Ltd. is listed on the BSE and NSE for over a decade and the London Stock Exchange for the past 5 years. After 20 years, I was looking to take a year's sabbatical to pursue a quality management program. Having done my graduation from REC (Trichy) and Master’s from BITS (Pilani), I was very particular on joining an institute of high quality.

I was also particular about interacting with outstanding faculty as well as with a diverse set of fellow students, who were achievers in their own fields. The faculty at Great Lakes consisted of some of the influential thinkers in management academics including Prof. Seenu Sreenivasan from Stanford, Prof. S P Kothari from MIT, Prof. Shyam Sunder from Yale, Prof. Arunachalam from Carnegie Mellon, Prof. Narayanan from Harvard, Prof. Surysekar from Florida International State University and, of course, there was Uncle Bala.

What was unique about the program was its emphasis on entrepreneurial capabilities and thought leadership. I got a whole new perspective of growing a business while getting valuable insights into employee motivation and business expansion. I am proud to have been a part of the pioneering batch of Great Lakes Institute of Management.”

Campus Facilities The journey so far

For an institution that just turned six, Great Lakes has made great strides in management education. What perhaps sets it apart from the others are its constituent members. Its Business Advisory Council and Academic Advisory Council consists of luminaries -- truly the who’s who from the spheres of business and management education. Such exalted individuals provide the guiding light to young aspiring business leaders of tomorrow.

Great Lakes is unlike other management institutions, in that it believes in the power of the individual. A carefully drawn up course curriculum is then ignited with the passion to achieve -- which is what puts the students on a high flying career graph. Testimony to this is the fact that every student who has graduated out of the institution has found firm ground to grow into a global business leader of tomorrow.

Great Lakes has all the components that powers it to the top-of-the-charts in management education. Apart from a globally acknowledged faculty and a well thought through curriculum, it truly has excellence at its soul. Testimony to this is the fact that it is tied up with some of the finest International institutions for exchange of knowledge and skills.

Page 18: Great Lakes AdmissionBrochure

Great Lakes’ flagship full time Post Graduate Program in Management (PGPM) is uniquely designed to deliver customer-centricity, meritocracy and corporate ethics in one year.

It facilitates students’ understanding of the interaction between the various functional areas of a business system, thereby appreciating the need for developing cross-functional perspectives in business. Great Lakes works in close partnership with industry in shaping the curriculum. The curriculum is reviewed periodically to keep it in sync with the needs of an ever-changing and evolving market place.

The Post Graduate Program in Management has been designed by the Academic Advisory Council, which comprises the best in the world of managerial academia. This in turn has been streamlined with inputs from the Institute’s illustrious Business Advisory Council, to keep it in sync with the needs of an ever changing market place.

The program is designed to make the students business-ready and capable of responding to complex business requirements that arise in a changing global business environment. Throughout the course of study, emphasis is also placed on skill development, team-work, inclusivity principles and value-based management. The PGPM offered at Great Lakes Institute of Management is an accelerated program of one year duration divided into 7 terms. The following are the key components of the program:

Post Graduate Programin Management (PGPM) The Great Lakes concept of “Business Ready Managers”, besides giving an overview of various subjects, also

provides students with an opportunity to acquire in-depth knowledge in a chosen area by doing an empirical study under the guidance of a faculty member.

The empirical study provides a golden opportunity for students to practically understand the linkages between the different aspects of management. Effective managers are not specialists in one specific domain; they should also be good at seeing the interrelationships between various domains. Unlike a practical project in a course that gives hands-on exposure in one small domain, the empirical study provides greater insights into how a chosen phenomenon of interest in one domain is related to other facets of managerial life.

Joint work with faculty is an important form of education for students in higher-level academic institutions all over the world. And the most practical benefit of writing an empirical study article is that one learns how to actually persuade and convince others by culling out relevant information, gathering and analysing data, and presenting the output to support one’s stand and attain one’s goals; for example, changing an institutional rule, mobilising support for a new project, or getting valuable resources. The skill of persuading others is among the best predictors of success in life.

The expected outcome of the empirical study is a paper co-authored by the student with the faculty guide, to be submitted to a referred journal or conference.

Pedagogy

The curriculum and pedagogy lay emphasis on the development of a student's skills and ability to apply

management theories and concepts to real time problems in business. Teaching methods include lectures, case

studies, group discussions, business games, role-plays, seminars and group work. The program integrates the use

of the latest technology available in imparting the various principles of management. People skills are the

foundation upon which management education rests and ironically can never be taught in the classroom. The

program gives students the opportunity to develop their interpersonal and leadership skills by working in groups

and taking challenges head on.

Specialisation offered

Great Lakes aims at developing ‘Business Ready managers’. We have a unique specialisation model which is

structured into ‘Horizontals’ and ‘Verticals’. The ‘Horizontals’ focus on functional specializations, while the

‘Verticals’ focus on industry-specific specializations. This enables students to creatively leverage their

knowledge and skill sets in the area of their interest. The course curriculum has been framed by some of the best

names in academia, who form our Academic Advisory Council.

At Great Lakes we believe in the philosophy of Karma Yoga, where actions are not driven by greed, but by the ideals of selfless duty. Every full-time student is required to do a Karma Yoga (selfless service) project as part of the Post Graduate Program in Management. The objective is to help students realise their social responsibilities and inculcate noble values in them. Great Lakes incorporates ‘Project Karma Yoga’ as an integral part of its curriculum which aims at nurturing future managers with sharp business acumen alongside valuable qualities like empathy, selflessness and giving back to society. The Karma Yoga project is a unique medium for students to connect with ground realities and play their role in bringing about a positive change in society. Our vision is to create a rewarding and sustainable relationship between academia and society through Karma Yoga.

Making a difference is the ultimate standard by which we judge leaders. This project creates opportunities for students to be leaders, to make a difference in the lives and situations of those who are less powerful and less well off -- economically and socially. To achieve this goal, students use management skills learned in the classroom for the benefit and service of others. In other words, not only do students put into practice what they have learned but, more importantly, they do so in the pursuit of moral value -- a combination which is rare in business schools.

“Karma Yoga is the attaining through unselfish work of that freedom which is the goal of all human nature” (Swami Vivekananda, Complete Works, Vol.1, p.110). Concern for others and addressing their real needs form the foundation of authentic leadership. Karma Yoga project provides an experiential learning of leadership. We have adopted 30 villages near our campus for development. Karma Yoga is an initiative towards “Empowerment through Partnership” and is designed to have an enduring impact on many people who are associated with it.

Thus, Karma-Yoga results in: • Vivid and meaningful learning experiences that reinforce and transcend the classroom experiences.• Understanding responsibilities towards society and actually making a difference.

management theories and concepts to real time problems in business. Teaching methods include lectures, case

and taking challenges head on.

All the Best!

when you have a sharper vision,

you see things ahead of others
