If youre thinking about hit-ting the fairway, here are some

tips on how to get started.

GOLF WILL TRY YOUR

PATIENCE, DONT SET

YOUR EXPECTATIONS

TOO HIGH

Learning different swingsand aim is not an easy skill andis not something that comesnaturally. It takes practice.Sometimes the grip or theposition of the club can beuncomfortable and the naturalinstinct is to change to some-thing more comfortable. How-ever, by being patient, thingswill start to feel more natural,resulting in a better swing andgolf experience. Instant resultsare not possible in golf.Patience is crucial.

HAVE THE RIGHT CLUBS

Having clubs that are thecorrect height is crucial to golf.For your driver club, the loft orangle of the club face that con-trols trajectory and affects dis-tance, should be 10 degrees orhigher.

A prospective golfer shouldalso carry a variety of woods,irons, wedges and putters.Each of these serves an indi-vidual purpose and has a dif-ferent loft degree.

Despite the common mis-

conception, woods are nolonger made of wood, but ofmaterials like zinc, aluminumand titanium. Common choic-es for beginners are aluminumor titanium alloys. For irons, itis suggested that they are madeof zinc.

HAVE PROPER GRIP

A golf grip should be withthe fingers of both hands and

not the palms. The most pres-sure should be felt in the lastthree fingers of your left hand.However, squeezing too hardon the club also negativelyaffects your swing, so be sureto have a loose but firm grip.

There are several differentgrips such as the 10-finger grip,or baseball grip, the interlock-ing grip and the Vardon overlap

grip. It is important to change

your grip every so often asgrips tend to wear off over timeleaving the club smooth andslick.

For the 10-finger grip, theindex finger of the left handand the little finger of the righthand do not overlap but domake contact with each other.This is usually the default gripfor most beginners or golfers

with weaker arm and wriststrength.

BE IN LINE WITH YOUR

TARGET

A good way to make sureyou are in line with your targetwhen first learning is to make astraight line with a piece ofstring running from the hole toyour ball. Place your putter in aposition so that it is almost

touching the ball, but notquite.

Make sure your lead foot isperpendicular to the target lineyou have created. Your eyes willoften create optical illusionsand make you think you are inline when really you are off.This exercise will help you trainyourself to be on target.

HAVE GOOD POSTURE

According to Granite BayGolf Clubs PGA Jim Stewart,you should lean forward at thehips and have a slight kneebend and let your arms hangstraight down when holdingthe club.

Make sure you weight is dis-tributed evenly on the balls ofyour feet and slightly flex yourknees.

Have your arms hang

straight down. This will placethe butt-end of the handleabout a fist away from the bodyallowing you to easily andfreely swing your arms backand through.

FOLLOW THROUGH

Just as in soccer and basket-ball, following through withyour swing is vital for golf. Its

important to follow through tohave good distance and to get

the ball up in the air. Just goingout to hit balls wont make youbetter.

You first must have a repeat-able swing (being able to hitthe ball on the middle of theclubface). After your club hasimpact with the ball, keep yourhead behind the ball to ensurea full release.

Your head should naturallycome up with your right shoul-

der, and should ultimately faceyour target to complete the fol-low through.

The recently concludedLakeside Little League run tothe brink of the Little LeagueWorld Series turned the sum-mer upside down for the fami-lies of 12 young ballplayers.With practices that began onJune 15, and a return to town just in time to start the new

school year, the team essen-tially spent its summer on thediamond.

I think that is great, saidLakeside manager Bill Rocke-feller. I dont think these kidswould have enjoyed anythingbut that.

In looking back at the experi-ences, Rockefeller struggled topin down any one moment ashis highlight of the summer, as

his team compiled 20 wins in

22 starts against high-levelcompetition.

I think one of the biggesthighlights was Grant (Powers)stealing home to tie up thechampionship game, Rocke-feller said. He is such a talent-

ed and instinctive player.

In terms of rating the opposi-tion, Rockefeller is convincedthat surviving the initial localtournaments was as tough asanything his team saw.

Beating Woodcreek twice(in district play) was huge for

us, Rockefeller said. They

have been the rival for a longtime and that team was rightup there with San Ramon. Wealso were nervous early againstTri-City (in the section final)

and the Dylan Keeney grandslam in that game was verymemorable.

Lakeside has been to theNorCal finals twice in 2003and this season and on bothoccasions, the kids from Gran-ite Bay and Loomis havereached the regional event inSan Bernardino. One of themajor differences for this Lake-side team may well have been

its ability to call on the experi-ences of the 2003 team inbeing better prepared for theWestern Region tourney.

We got to San Bernardino,out of the cars and into thebarracks, Rockefeller said.Then we walked out to thefield and their eyes were as bigas silver dollars.

The all-stars did not seem toget caught up in the awe of the

big moment as they ran off five

straight wins, the fifth in dra-matic fashion, to reach the Western Region final. Thepitching of Mitch Hart, NickFrank and Zach Hall was

amazing, and Halls game-win-ning long balls in the NorthernCalifornia final and again inthe Western Region semifinalsare among Rockefellers bestmemories.

The final, against the teamfrom Southern California, wasan overwhelming experienceas the Northern Californiachamps hung with the mightyChula Vista juggernaut in front

of a capacity crowd at AlHoughton Stadium. The con-test was tied 3-3 into the fifthbefore Park View Little Leaguepulled away.

While the run ended Aug. 16in Southern California, thememories will live on for theLakeside all-stars, who havemade the rounds of the Sacra-mento-area morning TVshows, squeezing media events

in between junior high classes.

On any given Friday after-noon, the Granite Bay GolfClub is jumping with activity.

Once the workday is over,and Indian summer, coolbreezes set in, the club is hometo happy members enjoying alltheir local club has to offer.

Children perfecting putts onthe practice green; familiesenjoying pasta specials in theMackenzie Grill, couples rais-ing glasses in toasts, withrefreshing Chardonnay inhand, are common sights atthe members-only, 18-holegolf club.

While Friday seems to be afavorite day for members, anyday is perfect for the casual, yet

elegant, traditional, old-golfclub atmosphere the staff soconscientiously provides to its475 golf and 200 social mem-bers.

As many long-time GraniteBay residents can attest, thearea wasnt always the lushswath of shimmering greenthat is in evidence today. Priorto the back nine holes opening15 years ago, the front nine a

few months after that, the 180-acre area was beautiful, butwild.

People tell me, all the time,that people used to ski in thelittle lake out here, saidMichael Lee, the clubs mem-bership director.

too, Trish Sandbach, the clubsmembership relation directoradded.

There are still plenty of wildareas on the Robert T. Jonesand Kyle Phillips designedcourse, including a large lakethat provides a habitat forCanadian geese, red-wingedblackbirds, and a variety offurred and feathered friends,earning the clubs designation

as an Audubon International

Signature Sanctuary.There are fewer than 75

courses in the world that arelisted as Audubon Signaturecourses, Lee explained.

Sandbach agrees that thecourse architects did a phe-nomenal job, changing very lit-tle on the challenging 73.6 rat-ed, 142-slope course.

Foliage-filled gulches and sixbridges, crossing Linda Creek

and its tributaries, allow golfand nature enthusiasts to feelsurrounded by nature sounds, smells, and sights, allsoothing to the senses.

Were not a master-plannedcommunity, like Serrano orWinchester, which makes it areally walkable course, Leesaid. You will only see a cou-ple holes at a time, and youllnever hit a house.

Sandbach said she has fallenin love with the course over the10 plus years shes worked atthe club.

The natural terrain, all theoak trees and granite outcrop-pings its golf as it should be,which means golf in its naturalstate, she said.

Of course, golf isnt the onlyactivity at the club.

Terrace at the Tips, therecently-christened outdoordining area is a popular placeto enjoy a meal and great viewat the same time. Located at

the tips of holes number oneand 10, diners have a ring-sideseat for great driving action,and a peek at the 18th green as

well. And Tillys, an over 21 pub,

offers snacks and beverages, as well as the full restaurantmenu. Its an ideal place forgolfers to grab a cool beverageon a toasty afternoon.

When we look to spendhundreds of thousands of dol-lars a year on improvements,well, other clubs just arent see-ing that, Lee said.

Unlike some golf clubs, fam-ily experiences are what Leeand Sandbach know their cluboffers.

Our membership is getting

younger, with our averagemember being 45, Lee said.Were enrolling members whohave been in the communityfor six or eight years. They havefamilies now and more time tointroduce their kids to theclub.

The club supports the kidconnection by offering events

like youngsters movie night,and the popular LittleLinksters program a funeducation, which includeschipping, putting and eti-

quette, for children 3 to 6 yearsold.

In addition, the club part-ners with Eureka Union SchoolDistrict for events like a golftournament in May, and this years annual auction night, which will take place at theclub in November.

EUSD is a big supporter ofthe club, and visa versa, Leesaid.

But charity events arent theonly parties going on at theclub.

Weekends are filled with weddings, and the banquetfacilities are open to non-members and members alike.

People think, oh my goshGranite Bay Golf Club must beso expensive, Im not evengoing to call them. But theyreso surprised at how affordable

it is, said Heidi Robinson, theclubs private event director.Weddings here are so memo-rable. At one wedding, thegroom surprised his bride witha fireworks display over thelake during the first dance.Every guest had tears it wasso romantic, so special, shesaid.

The club also offers one-of-a-kind events, like a White

House Chefs dinner pre-pared by, and followed by dis-cussion with the White Housechef, who served under Presi-dent George Bush.
