Across Campus
Two New Board Members Appointed
Governor John Engler has appointed two new members to GVSU' s Board of Control. Judith Hooker, of Cascade Township, replaces Maxine Swanson, and Joseph Stewart of Battle Creek replaces William Reamon. The appointments are for eight-year terms. Swanson's and Reamon's terms expired December 31.
Hooker is the chairman of the board of the Council of Michigan Foundations. She also serves as president of the Ferguson Hospital Foundation and as a trustee of the Ferguson Ho~pital board. In addition, she serves on the Friend of Grand Rapids Foundation advisory board and is a member of the Grand Rapids Rotary Club and the Grand Rapids Junior League.
Stewart is senior vice-president of Corporate Affairs for the Kellogg Co. He is a graduate of Southern University. The two new members will be officially welcomed at the next Board of Control meeting, to be held on February 22.
GVSU Submits Cost-Effective Proposals
GVSU has submitted two proposals to the NACUBO/USX Foundation cost reduction incentive awards program.
The first proposal outlined improvements to residence hall wiring without university expense. GVSU combined the needs of the university to rewire its residence halls for voice and data communications with local cable companies' desires to offer cable television
services to students. By requiring competitive bids from each cable company for free, simultaneous installation of voice, data, and cable wiring, GVSU netted savings of at least $55,000.
The second proposal outlined the university's "Recy::le Forest" project. As GVSU' s recy::ling program became more successful, the Recycling Committee suggested that one tree be planted on campus for every ton of office paper recycled. Thirty-three trees were planted last fall, and the program's total net savings was $10,854. This is an ongoing project.
Distinguished Alumni Nominations Due February 15
This is a reminder that nominations for Distinguished Alumni Awards are due in the Alumni Office on Friday, February 15. The presentations are made at Commencement.
Nomination forms listing eligibility criteria were sent to all faculty and staff.

Library Features Special Exhibits for February
Zumberge library is featuring two exhibits this month, one in honor of Black History Month and the other celebrating Valentine's Day.
Portraits of African American \\/Omen who have made contributions to American life and books on black \\/Omen are on display in honor of Black History Month.
Love letters from famous authors are on display in observance of St. Valentine's Day.
Both displays can be found in the exhibit cases on the first floor of the library.
Donations Sought For WGVU/WGVK-TV Auction
In preparation of its 17th annual auction, WGVU/WGVK-TV is seeking donations of general merchandise.
The auction, the major fund-raising activity for the station, will be held in two parts, the first in April and the second in the fall. Donations can be made until April 25.
Grand Valley State University
Businesses may donate items or services with a value of $60 or more. Major donations, those valued at $400 or more, should be made by February 28.
In return for their donations, businesses receive publicity and state and federal tax benefits.

Supreme Court Denies Appeal On January 29 the Michigan Supreme
Court declined to hear the appeal of Professor Rosalyn Muskovitz in her legal action against Grand Valley State University. Muskovitz had appealed the Michigan Court of Appeals decision, which ruled that the faculty's policy on the confidentiality of peer evaluations was permissible under state law.
"It is hoped that this action by the Michigan Supreme Court will be the official end of the unsuccessful legal challenge to the faculty's personnel policy on peer review," said Tom Butcher, university counsel.
Coming Events GVSU Sponsors Black History Month Activities
As part of its continuing effort to increase multicultural awareness, Grand Valley State University is sponsoring a number of free, public activities in support of Black History Month.
Throughout February, a Lunchbreak Rim Series will feature three movies from "An African-American Contribution in Him: A Tribute to Denzel Washington."
"Soldier's Story" will be shOI.VIl today, February 11, '"Mo Better Blues" on Monday, February 18, and "Cry Freedom" on Monday, February 25. The showings will begin at noon in the Kleiner Commons, rooms A and B.
On Monday, February 18, a lecture on "The African American Male: The Forgotten Soldier" will be presented at 2 p.m. in the Kirkhof Center Promenade. ·

On Saturday, February 23, the Black History College Bowl will take place from 10 a .m. to 2 p.m. in the Kirkhof Center Portside Room.
Faculty, staff, and the public are also invited to view a collection of works by artists of African descent on Tuesday, February 26, in the Kirkhof Center Mainsail Lounge from 3 to 5 p.m. The showing is sponsored by Delta Sigma Theta . The pieces are on loan from the Bayard Gallery of Rne African-American Art in Grand Rapids.
On Wednesday, February 27, a Soul Festival will be held in The Kirkhof Center Promenade.

'Women oflran' Topic of Forum The university community is invited to at
tend a forum on "The Women of Iran" on Tuesday, February 12, from noon to 12:50 p .m. in Room 102 Manitou Hall.
The forum is sponsored by the Anthropology Student Organization. The lecture will be presented by &ika Friedel, author of The Women of Deh Koh and professor of anthropology at Western Michigan University.

Wrestling Team Hosts Home Meets
The Grand Valley wrestling team invites faculty and staff to attend two home meets on Wednesday, February 13, and Friday, February 22, in the Reid House.
The February 13 meet will be against Ferris State University, and will begin at 7 p.m. The February 22 meet is the NCAA regional tourney, and will start at 11 a .m.
Persian Gulf War Topic of February 14 Forum
"War in the Middle East: What the Controlled Media Does Not Tell Us" will be the topic of a forum to be held on Thursday,
February 14, from 1 to 4 p.m. in Room 174, Lake Superior Hall.
James Goode, associate professor of history, will discuss the topic, "What ls Our Future in the Middle East?" GVSU student Gerry Chareeb will discuss "A Vietnam Veteran Looks at the Middle East War." Edward Haurek, sociology instructor, will lecture on" Patriotism, the Media, and Opposition to the Gulf War." Frances McCrea, assistant professor of sociology, will speak on "The Persian War: Gender, Race, and Class Issues." Karen Henry, with the Institute for Global Education, will present "An Arab Perspective on the U.S. Involvement in the Middle East." GVSU student Brandon Williams will speak on "Will War Work? Practical Nonviolent Conflict Resolution in the Persian Gulf Crisis." James Thompson, associate professor of political science, will lecture on "Israel, Restraint and Retaliation: Do Words Mean What They Seem?"
The forum is sponsored by the Social Sciences Division and the Institute for Global Education.
President's Ball To Be Held February 16
The Rfth annual President's Ball will take place Saturday, February 16, at 6 p.m. in the Kirkhof Center. This year's theme is the Roaring '20s.

GVSU Orchestra Concert To be held February 17
The Grand Valley State University Orchestras will present a free concert featuring seven student soloists on Sunday, February 17, at 3 p.m. in the Louis Armstrong Theatre.
Lee Copenhaver, assistant professor of music, will conduct the GVSU Orchestra and the GVSU Chamber Orchestra.
Featured works include the Concerto for Two Flutes in C major by Antonio Vivaldi, Concerto for Trumpet by Henri Tomasi, Adagio for Clarinet and String Orchestra by Joesph Barrnann, La Oracion Del T orero by Joaquin T urina, Sinfonia Concertante for violin and viola by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart,
Concertino for Marimba by Paul Creston, Turina's The Prayer of The Bullfighter, and Academic Festival Overture by Johannes Brahms. The performance is expected to last approximately 90 minutes.

President to Address Faculty and Staff February 19
President Arend D. Lubbers will address the university community about fiscal matters on Tuesday, February 19, at 12:15 p.m. in the Kirkhof Center Promenade. All faculty and staff are encouraged to attend.
Business and Minority Speaker Lectures February 21
Barry Robinson, former senior counsel for the United States Department of Commerce International Investment and Trade unit , and the department's chief counsel for minority business devebpment, will present two lectures to the GVSU community on Thursday, February 21.
Robinson will speak on "Multinational Trade Negotiations and Emerging Global Markets" at 11 a .m. in the Kirkhof Center cabins.
Robinson will also discuss "Social and Economic Challenges: The Minority Perspective" at 1:30 p .m. in the Kirkhof Center cabins.
Robinson will also meet members of the west Michigan minority community for an open-ended meeting about their concerns at the LV. Eberhard Center at 4 p .m. on February 21.
Robinson's lectures are sponsored by the Seidman School of Business and the Office of Multicultural Affairs.

Soviet Space Program, Iraqi Weaponry Focus of February 26 Lecture

Human Resources Sponsors EAP Staff Seminar
The Human Resources Office is offering a four-session seminar on "Supervising and Managing People" for the university's administrative and professional staff.
Topics such as legal responsibillties, affirmative action, interviewing, cultural diversity, positive feedback, and sexual harassment will be discussed. The sessions will be held Tuesdays on Februaiy 26 (8 a.m.-4:30 p.m.), March 5 (8 a.m.-noon), March 12 (8 a.m -noon), and March 19 (8 a .m.-2:30 p.m.).

Pagemaker Training Seminar Scheduled
The GVSU Publications Roundtable is offering a training seminar on March 6 and 7 on the use of the Macintosh and Pagernaker.
The seminar will consist of two half day sessions--two mornings or t\AA:l afternoons. Space is limited to 13 for each session, which will be held in the Manitou Hall computer lab.

An interdepartmental charge of $80 for each participant to cover the costs of materials will be assessed.
The seminars, to be taught by Roy Winegar, GVSU' s marketing communications coordinator, are open to staff at any level of proficiency.

Faculty and Staff Sketches Frederick Chapman, visiting assistant
professor of communications, was elected to a three-year term to the board of the directors of the West Michigan Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America.
Donald Klein, professor of accounting and taxation, was the keynote speaker at the January 22nd meeting of the Michigan Association of Spring Manufacturers. His lecture was titled 'The Theory of Constraints."

Robert Junn, professor of political science, has been appointed nomination committee chair of the International Studies Association. The association promotes teaching and research of international subjects. Its membership comprises universities from North America and Europe.
